Here are the changes to Canadian mobile rate plans this week [March 10 – March 16]

Rogers discounts a couple plans by $5/mo for a limited time

Toronto-based national carrier Rogers discounted two of its plans by $5/mo. The move comes after Rogers replaced its $110/mo 65GB plan with a $100/mo 50GB plan.

Now, that 50GB plan costs $95/mo for a limited time. Along with the change to the 50GB plan, Rogers reduced its $95/mo 45GB plan to $90/mo.

A $5/mo discount may not sound like a huge amount, but it can add up over time. For example, $5/mo over two years adds up to $120 in total. Naturally, I’d like a larger monthly discount, but $5 off is $5 off.

Rogers’ plans as of March 8, 2022

Rogers’ change almost matches a similar discount Telus applied to its plans a few days ago. Both carriers have $85/mo 25GB base plans (unchanged by the new discounts) and $95/mo 50GB plans. The only real difference is the middle plan — Rogers’ $90/mo 45GB plan to Telus’ $85/mo 40GB plan. Oh, and the other major difference is Telus’ recently-added data speed caps.

Bell also tweaked its plans, offering prices similar to Rogers and Telus, but it still has a $100/mo 50GB price.

Rogers and EORN extend 5G access in 10 Eastern Ontario communities

Telecommunications giant Rogers and the Eastern Ontario Regional Network (EORN) have extended 5G access to 10 communities in Eastern Ontario.

Rogers 5G network is now available in the following communities:

  • Elizabethtown-Kitley
  • Petawawa
  • Greater Napanee
  • Russell
  • Hawkesbury
  • Selwyn
  • Mississippi Mills
  • South Glengarry
  • Pembroke
  • South Stormont

The expansion is part of a $300 million public-private partnership to close the digital divide in Eastern Ontario. EORN, Rogers, the federal government, and the Province of Ontario are partners on the project. Details were first introduced in March 2021.

“Our Government is proud to partner with the Government of Ontario to connect ten additional communities in Eastern Ontario to a strong and reliable 5G network,” MP Francis Drouin, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Agriculture, said in a statement.

“These communities will now have access to an improved cellular connection, allowing residents and businesses to access important essential services wherever they are.”

The investment has already impacted eight communities, including Lindsay, Perth, and Peterborough. At completion, the project will have 300 new cell towers, update 300 pre-existing sites, and deliver mobile connectivity to 113 municipalities and Indigenous communities.

Rogers replaces $110/65GB plan with $100/50GB plan

Toronto-based national carrier Rogers changed one of its four ‘Infinite’ plans. The company’s $110/mo now costs $100, but comes with 15GB less data than before.

Overall, it appears to be a relatively minor change going from $110/65GB to $100/50GB. Nothing else about the plan appears to have changed, nor has Rogers adjusted any of its other plans.

That means customers who subscribe to the new $100/mo plan still get access to 5G (if they have a 5G-capable device and live in one of the few regions with 5G coverage), 50GB of “unlimited” data, and unlimited calling and texting in Canada and the U.S.

The unlimited data option, as with other Rogers Infinite plans, means that customers can use data at full network speed for the first 50GB. Beyond that, Rogers throttles data speeds to a maximum of up to 512Kbps. Customers can continue using data at the significantly reduced speed.

Rogers also still has its six months of free Disney+ offer going on, which is great for any customers who don’t already have Disney+.

The company’s other plans are as follows:

  • $85/mo 25GB
  • $95/mo 45GB
  • $175/mo 100GB

Ultimately, I’m not sure how “worth it” the new $100/50GB plan is for customers who don’t need the U.S. calling package. Unless you frequent the U.S., you might be better off saving the $5/mo — I don’t think most people will miss the 5GB of data. Those that do frequent the U.S., however, will benefit from the built-in U.S. calling and texting and can save money on roaming costs.

Bell, Rogers, Telus, and Shaw remove Russian network RT from channel lineups

Russian state-funded channel RT is no longer available to Bell, Rogers, Telus, and Shaw customers.

The move came after Minister of Heritage Pablo Rodriguez said the government is considering options to get the network off the air.

According to the Globe and Mail, the channel was no longer available to Bell customers as of Sunday. Rogers and Telus told the publication the removal of the channel will take effect Monday on their networks.

Shaw confirmed the same through a tweet on Sunday night, stating channel subscribers will receive a credit to use on their next bill.

The changes come days after Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, causing thousands of residents to desperately flee.

The move is crucial Ihor Michalchyshyn said. The chief executive of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress told the Globe and Mail Russia is using the network to legitimize the invasion of Ukraine.

No clear winner: Rogers, Bell, and Telus offer levelled 5G experiences, says report

When 4G rolled out worldwide, Canada was a leader in implementing the network. The story doesn’t go the same way when rolling out 5G.

According to mobile analytics company Opensignal, the limited spectrum availability in the 3.5GHz band might explain why Canada’s shift from 4G to 5G network is slower than other countries uptaking 5G.

This isn’t to say Canada’s leading telecom companies haven’t launched 5G networks in select parts of the country or haven’t continued to grow these networks. 5G does exist in Canada, but its access is limited.

Examining the experience for those who have access to 5G, Opensignal has come out with an annual report examining 5G experiences offered by Rogers, Bell and Telus.

According to the report, Rogers offers Canada the best 5G availability. However, there wasn’t a significant change compared to the last report, where Rogers held the same position. Bell and Telus did see their scores improve as more people spent time connected to their networks.

Rogers tied with Bell when it came to 5G reach, having access to the network in locations that matter to users, like their home or workplace.

Bell and Telus tied for the best 5G video experience, offering a consistent experience across streaming platforms, “fast loading times and almost non-existent stalling.” This stood true for Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario. While they were highly rated in Quebec as well, they did not match up to Vidéotron.

Telus and Rogers offered the best 5G voice app experience.

Opensignal ranks Rogers as offering the best gaming experience. The company scored 81.8 points out of 100, Telus scored 80 and Bell 70. While good news for Rogers, users across all three networks reported declined experiences compared to the last report.

When it comes to downloading speeds, Bell and Telus offered the best services, with scores tied above 150Mbps. Both companies provide speeds between 68 and 72 percent faster than Rogers.

Rogers had the fastest upload speeds of 20.8Mbps. This is about 16 percent faster than Bell and 8.5 percent faster than Telus.

Mobile network experience

While all three companies are dominantly portrayed in 5G experiences, the same doesn’t hold for mobile experiences.

Opensignal ranks Telus as the “dominant operator” for that category.

Telus offers the best video, games, voice app, and upload speed experiences. It ties in offering the best download speed and 4G coverage experiences with Bell.

Opensignal reports Bell significantly improved its download speed experience compared to the last report. Bell users reported a boost of 13.3 percent. In comparison, Telus users saw their speed increase by 9.4 percent.

Rogers and Bell tie for second in the category of multiplayer mobile gaming experiences.

“This highlights that while download speeds are important, they cannot be used to infer a user’s quality of experience when using over-the-top (OTT) voice services, and while streaming videos or playing multiplayer mobile games connected to mobile networks,” the analysis notes.

The only category Telus doesn’t lead in is 4G availability. While scores have increased across all three providers, Rogers and Bell lead in this category. It is important to note that all three carriers allow for reasonable access, and users are connected to 4G services or better at least 93 percent of the time.

Local news will suffer if Rogers, Shaw merger approved, Canadian Heritage committee told

Executives from Rogers have said their merger with Shaw will be good for local news as they’ll create localized teams to serve specific communities.

Critics have argued the validity of this statement from the beginning. In their latest outcry, several witnesses told the Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage local news will face the consequences if various government bodies approve the Rogers and Shaw merger.

Catherine Edwards, executive director of the Canadian Association of Community Television Users and Stations (CACTUS), said community news has long suffered from similar mergers. Over the past 20 years, 75 percent of the 300 cable TV stations that served local communities have shut down. Cable giants have scaled back on production infrastructure to cities and instead focused on selling tv subscriptions, specialty channels and mobile services.

“We believe community-owned media is the best way to serve communities with local news and to ensure a diversity of voices continue to fill our airwaves,” she said.

Edwards said local news stations are also important to all politicians.

“These stations ensure that you as parliamentarians can reach your constituents to talk about the issues that are important, not sound bites muted out from mega-corporations who are interested in blockbuster U.S series, but community-owned entities committed to supporting local democracies.”

Matthew Hatfield, the campaigns director of Open Media, said the merger would also cut funding towards Global News, previously funded by Shaw.

Rogers will instead be redirecting the funds to City News, forcing Corus to seek financial support from the independent local news fund (ILNF).

The fund supports smaller local news productions, and Hatfield said Corus could absorb between 60 and 80 percent of the funds, taking away from smaller outlets.

“To afford the purchase, Rogers is taking on immense levels of debt — debt that needs to be paid off by cutting costs or raising prices,” Hatfield said. “Given that local news is already barely economically viable, that’s not going to come in increasing news prices. It will come from slashing programming and jobs.”

Witnesses from the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) will appear on another day. Rogers was also invited to speak before the committee but declined.

The CRTC held the only public hearing to discuss broadcast aspects of the deal in November. Private hearings are also taking place with the Competition Bureau and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. No decisions have been shared at this time.

Rogers increased several plan prices by $5 or $10 per month

Rogers increased the price of three of its four plans by $5 or $10, but also tacked on slightly higher data amounts.

The changes apply to Rogers’ ‘Infinite’ plans, which offer “unlimited” data, although a better way to look at it is overage-free data.

The “unlimited” data is actually a set bucket of data that customers can use at typical network speed — once customers go beyond that allotment, Rogers throttles speeds to a maximum of up to 512Kbps download and upload. However, customers can continue using data at the throttled speed without being charged overages.

The plans also include unlimited Canada-wide calling, texting, and picture and video messaging, enhanced voicemail, call and name display, call waiting, forwarding and group calling, and more.

It’s worth noting that the $110/mo plan now includes unlimited Canada-U.S. calling and texting. That change actually brings the plan more in line with Bell and Telus, which both offer Canada-U.S. talk and text on their more expensive plans (although both offer the plan at $100/mo with 50GB of data).

Moreover, Rogers also increased the monthly discount given for additional lines from $15/mo to $20/mo. That means that each extra line added to your Rogers account is $20 cheaper, although for most people the monthly bill will still end up being slightly more expensive (e.g. three lines with the old $80/mo plan and $15 add-a-line discount would come to $210/mo total, while the new $85/mo plan and $20 add-a-line discount would total to $215/mo).

Beyond that, Rogers’ plan perks have changed too. Customers can still get six months of free Disney+ with select plans, but it appears that the six months of free Apple Music offer is no longer available.
