Spam calls no more: STIR/SHAKEN will be implemented by end of month, says CRTC chair

Canada’s telecom giants have until November 30th to help customers validate the legitimacy of a caller.

Ian Scott, the chair of the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), shared the news at the Canadian Telecom Summit on November 15th. He explained the change will allow a provider to determine if a caller ID can be trusted by verifying them.

“Bad actors who have no interest in following the rules [and] have been contributing to an erosion of confidence in the telecommunications system,” he said in his speech.

Scott told the CBC more than 25 percent of calls made are robocalls.

STIR/SHAKEN technology, a framework that authenticates caller ID, will be used.

Secure Telephony Information Revisited, or STIR for short, allows carriers to validate a caller. Signature-based Handling of Asserted Information using Tokens (SHAKEN) is the framework that’s utilized by network providers.

The deadline to implement the change has been expanded in the past. Originally set for March 2019, the deadline was extended to September 2020, and again to June 2021. The change will be effective at the end of the month.

According to the CBC, caller IDs could come up with a red or green light, showing if the ID has been verified or not.

Scott shared Bell has applied to permanently block calls the network labels as scammers so the call never reaches the customer. “Bell has been testing this technology over the past two years and it has blocked more than 1.1 billion calls—that’s billion, with a B—between July 2020 and October 2021,” he said in his speech.

Bell told MobileSyrup the company has improved its IP-enabled wireless and wireline networks and expedited the delivery and testing of authentication equipment in preparation for the deadline.

“Bell supports the CRTC’s various efforts to protect Canadians from the harmful effects of nuisance, fraud, and misidentified voice calling, including the November 30 implementation of STIR/SHAKEN, just one of many such protective measures,” said Bell to MobileSyrup in a statement.

Rogers also told MobileSyrup that the carrier is on track to roll out the feature by the end of the month.

We’ve reached out to Telus and Freedom Mobile for more information regarding if the carriers will meet the deadline.

Rogers CEO Joe Natale ousted, Edward Rogers’ top pick takes over

Joe Natale is no longer the president and CEO of Rogers, according to a statement from the company.

Tony Staffieri — Edward Rogers’ preferred executive — will take over as the telecom giant’s interim president and CEO. This shift comes amid a power struggle within the Rogers that resulted in a judge allowing Edward Rogers, the chair of the Rogers’ family trust, to replace five director’s on the company’s board.

“On behalf of the Rogers family, the Board and our 24,000 team members across the country, I thank Joe for his leadership and contributions to our company, including paving the way for our future together with Shaw,” said Edward Rogers, in a press statement.

“While Joe is moving on, we have an experienced interim CEO and leadership team who will continue to focus on the business, return to stability, and closing our transformational merger with Shaw.”

The press release goes on to state that Staffieri has “over thirty years of telecom, financial, media and sports experience, including nine as the chief financial officer of Rogers.”

However, it seems Staffieri’s appointment is truly temporary, as the release also says that Rogers is looking for a permanent CEO that will “continue to drive our future growth.”

Rogers says that it still plans to acquire Shaw this spring in a $26 billion deal that’s still awaiting approval from the Canadian government.

5G network at the heart of Rogers’ and UBC’s new environmental changes partnership

Rogers and the University of British Columbia (UBC) have teamed up to develop lifesaving projects powered by 5G technology.

Part of the focus of the partnership is directed towards wildfire management. The project will involve monitoring forest conditions in real-time through the use of a 5G network.

This would be vital for a province prone to wildfires and other climate-related disasters. According to the Government of British Columbia, 1,610 wildfires burned 868, 203 hectares of land this year alone. 35 percent of these were caused by nature and 60 percent by humans.

“The 2021 wildfire season in B.C. was the third-worst on record in terms of area burned,” said Dr. Mathieu Bourbonnais from UBC’s department of earth, environmental and geographic sciences, in a press release.

A second project is focused on teleoperations. It will offer telemedicine to residents in remote communities using a system combining mixed reality, haptic technology, control theory and 5G.

Monitoring emergencies and disasters is another area of interest. The goal will be to create a medical platform powered by 5G slicing to address larger situations in a timely manner.

“5G is a critical part of Canada’s future and the ecosystem around leveraging its full potential is as important as building out the network behind it,” said Joe Natale, president and CEO of Rogers, in a statement.

This is the next step in an ongoing relationship between the two organizations. They first came together in 2018 with plans to build a 5G hub in Vancouver’s UBC campus.

MobileSyrup reached out to Rogers for more information regarding the project’s future availability once it’s completed.

Rogers, Creative BC to launch $1 million fund for Indigenous creators in B.C.

Rogers Group of Funds and Creative BC announced plans to jointly establish a new $1 million fund for Indigenous creators in British Columbia.

As part of the fund’s launch, Rogers announced a collaborative partnership with the Indigenous Screen Office (ISO) to open the first program, delivering a top-up to B.C.-based recipients of ISO’s recently announced Development Grant program. Data from ISO shows B.C.-based Indigenous applicants far outnumber those from other provinces.

Rogers Group of Funds will support the fund and Creative BC will administer it. Rogers says it’s Canada’s first provincial-national partnership focused on Indigenous creators. Further, it’ll be the first targeted Indigenous screen fund at Creative BC.

Additionally, Rogers says the fund will help increase access and representation for Indigenous produces and Indigenous-led production companies in B.C.’s domestic motion picture industry. Moreover, the fund is intended to contribute to strong foundations that can help correct the systemic and historic underrepresentation of Indigenous stories and storytellers in Canada’s screen sector.

Earlier this week, Rogers also announced a partnership with Coastal First Nations to build new cell towers in Haida Gwaii as well as support a conservation-based economy and Indigenous entrepreneurs in B.C.

Coastal First Nations, Rogers partnership to build cell towers in Haida Gwaii

Rogers Communications and Coastal First Nations (CFN) announced a partnership set to benefit CFN communities by improving connectivity, strengthening environmental stewardship and help Indigenous entrepreneurs grow their businesses with digital tools.

The partnership covers several initiatives that will be announced between now and 2022. These initiatives include academic research projects, the creation and growth of Indigenous-led internet service providers (ISPs) and digital platforms for Indigenous entrepreneurs.

As part of the initial partnership announcement, Rogers and CFN also unveiled four initiatives:

  • Build five new cell sites and upgrade existing infrastructure on Haida Gwaii in B.C. and bring new “near contiguous” coverage to Highway 16 from Masset through Port Clements to Queen Charlotte.
  • Rogers will invest and support CFN’s environmental stewardship work that supports a long-standing sense of collective responsibility to care for our lands and waters.
  • Rogers Sports & Media and CFN will raise awareness about the environmental challenges facing the Great Bear Rainforest, such as the threatened salmon population, with an upcoming music festival involving Indigenous artists and performances.
  • ‘Today’s Shopping Choice’s Let’s Shop Better’ platform will support new opportunities for Indigenous entrepreneurs from CFN communities.

Rogers also said it would engage in research and training initiatives and partner with CFN to support community events, increase its local presence and provide employment opportunities for youth and local entrepreneurs.

Rogers announces Pro On-the-Go service is expanding to Winnipeg

Rogers has announced that its Pro On-the-Go service is expanding to Winnipeg, Manitoba giving customers personalized support and same-day delivery when ordering a new device.

The Rogers Pro On-the-Go provides customers with a contactless experience, designed for those with a busy schedule, seek extra support when learning about a new device, or who are unable to visit a brick-and-mortar location. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Rogers has identified key locations and begun expanding the reach of the Pro On-the-Go service.

“Rogers is focused on keeping Canadians connected to what matters most, and for residents of Winnipeg, that’s even more possible now that a Rogers Pro can deliver their new wireless device and specialized service right to their door,” said Dave Fuller, the president of wireless at Rogers Communications, in a statement.

With its latest expansion, Manitoba customers can order a new device and have it hand-delivered by a Rogers Pro. The service also offers personalized support to set up the new device. Roger Pros will guide customers on how to do an initial setup, transfer media and apps, set up their email, and tweak their personal preferences. All of these perks are provided to the customer at no extra cost.

Rogers says that over 14 million Canadians now have access to the Rogers Pro On-the-Go service. Customers in the Greater Toronto Area, southwestern Ontario, Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton, and Greater Vancouver can access the service and gain access to its perks. The company has also confirmed that it plans to expand to more Canadian markets “in the coming months.”
