Rogers and Fido add repair centers to 15 stores across Canada

Rogers is now offering its certified repair program in 15 more cities across Canada.

This means that if you’re a Rogers or a Fido customer that lives in one of these locations, you can bring your phone into the store to get fixed and it will be repaired in-store instead of shipping it out to a repair centre.

The carrier says that phones can even be fixed in as little as a day in some cases. This is similar to how repairs from services like Mobile Klinik or UBreakIFixit operate.

The repair service is available in the following cities from October 18th onwards:

  • Ajax
  • Brampton
  • Markham
  • Mississauga
  • Oakville
  • Oshawa
  • Toronto
  • Vaughan
  • Whitby
  • Hamilton
  • Kitchener
  • London
  • Cambridge
  • Welland
  • Niagara Falls
  • The service will roll out to Barrie, St. Catharines Rogers and Fido and Waterloo stores on October 27th and Ottawa on November 3rd.

Rogers says it can fix battery issues, broken screens, cameras, speakers, software hiccups and more. All the repairs are also guaranteed with a 90-day warranty.

If you are a Rogers customer with a broken phone, you can book a repair here. If you’re with Fido, you’ll need to use this link instead.

Ookla Q3 report names Telus Canada’s fastest mobile operator

Telus has kept its crown as Canada’s fastest mobile operator, according to a slew of new statistics in Ookla’s Q3 Canada Market Report for 2021.

For context, Ookla is the owner and operator of Speedtest.net, a free web service that analyzes your Internet’s performance.

According to data gathered from its speed-tracking tool, Ookla says Telus was the fastest mobile operator in Canada during Q3 2021, with a ‘Speed Score’ of 81.93.

Shaw came out on top as the country’s fastest fixed broadband provider, while the title of fastest 5G went to Bell for its median 5G download speed of 183.39 Mbps, narrowly beating Telus’ 176.38 Mbps.

Meanwhile, Vidéotron kept it steady for yet another fiscal quarter, earning the title of Canada’s most consistent mobile operator in Q3 with a score of 87.4 percent

In terms of geography, Ookla found that Newfoundland and Labrador are Canada’s fastest regions for both fixed broadband and mobile, clocking in a median download speed of 124.22 Mbps

Calgary was named the city with the highest population with the best median fixed broadband download speed (134.33 Mbps), while Halifax won the mobile download speed category (113.10 Mbps).

Finally, the report claims that while Samsung devices earned the fastest combined performance scores in Q3 with a median download speed of 64.14 Mbps, edging out Apple’s 58.12 Mbps, the iPhone 13 Pro Max was the fastest popular device overall with a median download speed of 164.63 Mbps.

Past Ookla reports from 2021 found that Canada is no longer among the top 10 fastest countries for internet speeds, that 5G speeds in Ottawa are middling compared to other capital cities, that Alberta’s Waterton Lakes National Park boasts the fastest download speeds amoung Canada’s national parks, and that SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet service performs best in Saskatchewan.

Rogers to expand fibre internet network in the Ottawa area

Rogers is growing its fibre internet offerings in southeastern Ontario through a recently announced 24,000 location network expansion.

The 24,000 locations are mostly situated in the National Capital region, in the cities of Ottawa and Clarence-Rockland, the municipality of North Grenville, and the town of Carleton Place.

The press release provided no specific timeframe as to when residents and businesses in these locations can officially expect to gain access to Rogers’ high-speed fibre-to-the-home broadband.

The expansion is funded through a $188 million investment from the Toronto-based telecom carrier.

Earlier this week, Rogers announced that its 5G network is now available to 90 communities in 11 cities and towns in Quebec, including Beaconsfield, Boucherville, Brossard, Dorval, Drummondville, Longueuil, Mascouche, Mont Tremblant, Saint-Constant, Saint-Lambert, and Terrebonne.

Rogers expands 5G service to 11 regions in Greater Montreal

Rogers’ 5G internet service is now available to more people living in the Greater Montreal area.

The company announced that 90 communities in 11 cities and towns can now connect to Rogers’ 5G network .

The specific regions listed in the press release are Beaconsfield, Boucherville, Brossard, Dorval, Drummondville, Longueuil, Mascouche, Mont Tremblant, Saint-Constant, Saint-Lambert, and Terrebonne.

Interestingly, two of the regions listed — Dorval and Longueuil — are the home to major airports, including Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL).

This could affect the 5G service available in those areas to Rogers customers, as the federal government is restricting 5G service near some airports over concerns of possible interference between radio waves and aviation navigation tools.

To date, Rogers says it has improved wireless network connectivity in over 162 Quebec communities this year, and plans to boost connectivity in 360 communities total by the end of 2021.

Prior to this, Roger’s last 5G network expansion announcement was on September 23rd for the Nova Scotian regions of Dartmouth and Bedford.

Meanwhile, Telus — one of Roger’s main telecom competitors — recently announced a $90 million investment in 5G infrastructure, also in the Greater Montreal region.

Internal Rogers power struggle failed to oust CEO Joe Natale: report

Toronto-based national carrier Rogers saw a dramatic power struggle that ended with the abrupt departure of chief financial officer (CFO) Tony Staffieri as company chairperson Edward Rogers tried unsuccessfully to unseat CEO Joe Natale.

The Globe and Mail details the full saga (which is well worth the read) based on information from sources within the company. The Globe did not identify the sources since they’re not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

According to the report, tensions between Staffieri and Natale brewed for years. Staffieri joined Rogers in 2012 and developed a close relationship with the company’s chairperson. Further, Staffieri reportedly had ambitions to become the CEO and frequently butted heads with Natale about the company’s strategic direction.

After returning from the company’s most recent Christmas break, Natale allegedly began searching for a new CFO to replace Staffieri — a search interrupted by Rogers’ proposed acquisition of Shaw Communications, which happened in March. At the same time, Edward Rogers reportedly was trying to remove Natale from the CEO position and transition Staffieri into it. Rogers was also reportedly working to replace other members of the executive team, many of which were loyal to Natale.

The sources claim an emergency board meeting was held on September 26th. Melinda Hixon-Rogers, deputy chair of the company and Rogers’ sister, reportedly opposed Rogers’ plan — the overwhelming majority of the board backed Natale and his team. Staffieri’s departure came three days later.

In a statement to The Globe, a Rogers company spokesperson said:

“As with any similar transition, the recent CFO change was voted on and approved by the majority of the board of directors. The majority of the board has full confidence in Joe’s leadership and strategic vision for Rogers as we look forward to the transformational combination of Rogers and Shaw and continue to focus on delivering long-term value for our customers and shareholders.”

The Globe also detailed the company’s ongoing struggle with executive turnover — that alone is worth taking the time to read if internal politics at Rogers is at all interesting to you.

Industry analysts told The Globe that Staffieri’s departure in the midst of the Shaw acquisition was strange and unexpected. The proposed acquisition still requires approval from several regulatory bodies, including the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), Ministry of Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) and the Competition Bureau.

Telus reminds BB10 BlackBerry users that network connectivity ends Jan. 4, 2022

Telus has reminded the roughly ten remaining Canadian BB10 BlackBerry users (I’m confident this is an accurate number) that the former Canadian smartphone giant will be “turning these devices down” on January 4th, 2022.

This means that whether you’re using a BB10 device with Telus, Rogers, Bell or any other Canadian carrier, your device will no longer be able to connect to the network and won’t support voice, data, SMS or 911 services.

Strangely, Telus’ tweet mentions January 22, 2022, as the shutdown date, while its landing page regarding BB10 devices cites January 4th, 2022. On BlackBerry’s website, the company mentions January 4th as BB10’s death day.

Back in 2017, BlackBerry committed to offering two more years of support for BB10 devices and two years of network access to other BBOS devices.

Telus says that Blackberry is “now taking steps to decommission or terminate infrastructure” related to devices running BlackBerry 7.1 OS and earlier, BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry Playbook OS 2.1 and earlier. The carrier has a complete list of devices affected by the network shut down.

The last BlackBerry 10 device to release was the Leap back in April 2015. However, popular BB10 smartphones phones like the Classic, the Z10 and Q10 also run the operating system. The last BlackBerry device to release in Canada was the Android-powered Key2 through the company’s branding and manufacturing partnership with TCL.

The most important thing to take away here is that your uncle, who insists BlackBerry is a Canadian company that makes stellar devices, will probably need to buy a modern smartphone manufactured in the last five years.

Rogers’ confirms its Anyplace TV app will die on October 10

In a notice on its website, Rogers has confirmed that its Rogers Anyplace TV service included with Rogers Digital TV subscriptions will no longer be available as of October 10th.

According to the telecom giant, this means that Rogers Digital TV subscribers will no longer be able to view content on their computer or mobile devices through the Rogers Anyplace app or online streaming portal.

The complete statement from Rogers regarding Anyplace TV is available below:

“Since this service is accessed through an app and online streaming portal, you will no longer be able to view subscribed programming on your computer or mobile devices via Rogers Anyplace TV. Learn more about subscribing to Ignite TV and using the app to access TV, movies and music all in one place.”

Rogers notes that subscribers should shift to its Ignite TV platform that also offers a mobile app to continue to access the carrier’s TV, movies and music services on different platforms.

Motorola Edge (2021) could come to Rogers on Friday

Back in August, Motorola unveiled its new Edge (2021) flagship. Since then, the phone has become available in Canada both directly from Motorola and through Freedom Mobile. However, at the reveal, Motorola also said the phone would come to Rogers.

According to information MobileSyrup received from a tipster, the Rogers launch will happen on Friday.

Additionally, the tipster said that the Edge (2021) would be available for $33.24/month device financing and would cost $1,040 outright from the carrier.

It’s worth noting that the Edge (2021) is available for $899.99 on Motorola’s website. Freedom offers the phone for $0 upfront with a $25/month tab on a $60 phone plan.

According to Motorola’s website, the phone sports 256GB of storage, 8GB of RAM and runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G. Those interested can learn more about the Edge (2021) here.

MobileSyrup also reached out to Rogers about the rumoured Friday launch and will update this post with any information the carrier provides.

Thanks, Valet!
