Rogers’ new credit card gives you five days of Roam Like Home

Rogers has a new credit card offering cash back rewards and bonus earnings when redeeming cash back for select Rogers purchases, like paying a phone bill.

Rogers Bank’s new ‘Rogers Connections Mastercard’ offers cash back on “everyday purchases,” with two percent unlimited cash back on “eligible U.S. dollar purchases” and one percent unlimited cash back on other eligible purchases. Plus, customers who apply now for a Connections Mastercard will get a welcome bonus of 10 percent cash back for the first three months (up to a value of $100, according to a Rogers press release about the card).

Moreover, the Rogers Connections Mastercard offers a 30 percent bonus when customers redeem earned cashback for Rogers phone upgrades, and accessories, or when paying a monthly Rogers bill.

Along with the cashback bonus, the Rogers Connections Mastercard offers five free ‘Roam Like Home‘ days at no cost each year. Currently, Rogers charges $12/day for Roam Like Home when travelling to the U.S., and $15/day for international locations, up to a maximum of 20 days per billing cycle (Rogers actually increased the Roam Like Home price in March — remember the wild days of 2014 when Roam Like Home cost $5/day for up to 10 days per billing cycle?).

The Rogers Connections Mastercard has no annual fee for the first year but does cost $29 annually after the first year. Rogers does offer an “ongoing annual fee rebate” for customers who pay their monthly Rogers bill online with the Rogers Connections Mastercard.

Rogers’ new credit card comes ahead of the October 6th change to credit card fees, which will see Canadian businesses able to apply surcharges when customers pay with credit cards to cover the cost of credit card processing.

MobileSyrup asked Rogers if the company planned to add credit card surcharges to customer bills as Telus did, and whether it would exempt the Connections Mastercard from those fees. A Rogers spokesperson said that “with regards to a credit card processing fee, we have no plans to move ahead with a fee like this at this time.”

Here are the biggest Canadian telecom stories of the week [Sept. 24-29]

Atlantic Canada was hit by Hurricane Fiona a week ago, impacting telecommunications services for thousands. Here’s a roundup of how carriers responded and other telecom developments over the last week.

Business

Spam calls are incredibly annoying, but the worst part is that there isn’t much people can do about it. While the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) mandated all service providers to implement STIR/SHAKEN technology to curb spam calls in November, various factors have stopped the technology from taking full effect. Unfortunately, until these factors are addressed (or people choose to implement third-party technology), Canadians will continue to receive unwanted calls.

Xplore is extending its fibre services in Quebec under the provincial government’s Operation Haute Vitesse program. The service provider is currently working on giving access to 6,000 homes and businesses.

Telus will use Palo Alto Network’s security software on its 5G network.

Several service providers, including Telus and Freedom Mobile, waived charges for long distance calls and texts to Iran as protests continue in the country.

Following Hurricane Fiona’s arrival on September 24th, several carriers offered impacted customers various forms of assistance. Bell gave customers 50GB of extra data, Eastlink applied free data overages and top-ups, and Telus waived long-distance charges for calls, text, and data overages.

Government

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston sent a letter to Minister François-Philippe Champagne complaining about the “poor participation and support” of telecom companies before, during, and after Hurricane Fiona made downfall. “I’m asking you, as the Minister who oversees these companies, to consider all potential legislative and regulatory means to hold telecommunications companies accountable for participating in emergency planning, preparedness, response, mitigation, and recovery to the fullest extent possible,” Houston wrote. However, several companies have spoken up in their defence, stating they participated where possible.

Ministers Champagne and Chrystia Freeland met with telecom companies on the same day Houston shared his letter, according to a statement Champagne made on Twitter. It’s not clear if the parties met before or after Houston published the letter.

Nova Scotia’s Premier says carriers offered ‘poor participation’ during Hurricane Fiona

Nova Scotia’s Premier is calling out Canada’s telecommunications companies on their “poor participation and support” before, during, and after Hurricane Fiona.

Premier Tim Houston shared details in a letter sent to François-Philippe Champagne, Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry.

The letter states the Province’s Emergency Management Office (EMO) began preparing for Fiona’s landfall one week before it arrived and requested representatives from its infrastructure partners be sent to the Provincial Coordination Centre.

“Given the expected impacts on power and telecommunications, having a representative attend in person was imperative for optimal collaboration.”

Initial requests were left unanswered. Complaints from EMO led Bell to send one representative who was present in person for two days before working virtually. Eastlink, Rogers, and Telus participated virtually but failed to send a representative in person following the initial response. It was only after three days of public and media pressure did representatives attend in person.

Houston says cellular and landline services have improved, but some cell towers are running on generators, and reliable service isn’t available in Cape Breton.

While other key companies, including Nova Scotia Power and the Canadian Red Cross, were willing to participate in press briefings to share updates with residents, telecom companies were not. When a rep is made available, they’re unable to answer questions, he said.

“I’m asking you, as the Minister who oversees these companies, to consider all potential legislative and regulatory means to hold telecommunications companies accountable for participating in emergency planning, preparedness, response, mitigation, and recovery to the fullest extent possible,” Houston concludes in his letter.

Telecom news roundup [Sept. 17-23]

This week’s telecom roundup features news from Bell, which introduced 8Gbps symmetrical internet speeds and was named PCMag’s fastest mobile network in Canada.

But the Quebec-based telecom provider isn’t the only one to make headlines. To help recap the latest developments, here’s almost everything that happened in Canada’s telecom world over the past week.

Business

Bell has started rolling out its 8Gbps symmetrical internet to customers in Toronto. The company said the download speeds are five times faster than cable technology and upload speeds are 250 times faster.

Opesignal named Canada’s big three (Bell, Rogers, and Telus) as “high performers” in the 5G mobile experience. The report examined 5G services across the globe and found the three excelled in a handful of categories, including “5G Reach.”

Continuing with telecom awards, PCMag crowned Bell with the title of offering the fastest mobile network in Canada. The results show the Quebec-based telecom giant outpaced its competitors with its download speed and 5G+ offerings.

Telus’ application seeking to introduce a credit card fee has received more than 4,000 interventions. But Telus says the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has no reason to reject its application. The company states customers can avoid the 1.5 percent surcharge by paying with a method other than a credit card. “The rate pertains to an optional service, is avoidable for all customers, and does not seek to generate more revenue than the underlying costs,” Telus says in its latest response.

Xplore has increased its available download speeds in 124 New Brunswick communities. The rural service provider says download speeds reach up to 100Mbps and upload speeds go up to 10Mbps. The update will impact 21,000 homes and businesses.

Government

Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) Canada rejected a proposal that would have seen Telus absorb spectrum licenses from the now defunct company Xplore Mobile. The ISED cited future competition concerns for wireless services in Manitoba for the rejection.

PCMag says Bell offers the fastest mobile network in Canada

PCMag ranks Bell first in its fasted mobile networks in Canada tests.

The telecom giant records a maximum download speed of 1373Mbps and upload speeds of 142Mbps. Bell’s overall speed score is 90, while Rogers and Telus each have a final score of 91.

The publication notes the introduction of 5G+ through the 3,500MHz network has considerably improved speed. The three largest carriers in Canada introduced the network in June.

The publication notes the spectrum helped Rogers increase its average download speeds the most, compared to Bell and Telus. Before the introduction, the company was lagging behind its two competitors.

But Rogers was no match for Bell and its “spectacular work,” the report states. Bell has the fastest mobile network in 22 of the 31 areas, including Toronto and Calgary, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

Despite having similar speed scores, the report notes Rogers is in a “second-place showing.” Its 5G+ network is a significant player in B.C. and Montreal.

On the other hand, Telus has access to the 3,500MHz network, but it doesn’t have access to Android device firmware.

Opensignal’s 5G mobile experience awards names Canada’s big three as high performers

A new global ranking showing users’ 5G experience provides another example of the limited telecom services in Canada.

Opensignal’s 5G Global Mobile Network Experience Awards for 2022 examined the 5G experience between the first half of 2021 and 2022. It places the big three (Rogers, Bell, and Telus) in a small handful of categories.

Bell, Rogers, and Telus appear under the ‘5G Reach’ category. It measures how often networks connected users to a 5G network from all the places they visited. On a score of 0-10, Rogers comes first out of the big three with a score of 5.3, while Bell and Telus both have scores of 4.8. Rogers placed 14 out of a list of 34; Bell placed 21, and Telus came in 22nd.

Rogers is the only Canadian brand to appear in the gaming experience category under the Global Impact section. The class examined the gaming experience between 4G and 5G, and Opensignal’s users found the experience increased by 13.7 percent with Rogers 5G.

Rising Stars

Bell, Telus, and Rogers appear under the company’s ‘Rising Star’ category, measuring the 20 most improved companies for 5G experience year-over-year.

Bell and Telus appear in the top 20 for 5G reach. “Bell and Telus have made the grade with increases of 72.5 percent and 71.2 percent, respectively.”

Rogers appears in the top 20 for upload speed and is the only North American company to appear on the list.

Report only covers 5G

An Opensignal spokesperson told MobileSyrup that the report only analyzed and compared services for companies that launched 5G services.

“We have not included regional operators, MVNOs or wholesale networks, to ensure the report is focused on the operators that most consumers would consider when choosing a mobile service,” the spokesperson said.

The statement reveals the limited options Canadians have when it comes to choosing a telecom provider offering 5G services in Canada.

Some Rogers fibre customers experience service interruption in Hamilton region

Rogers is currently experiencing a service interruption that’s impacting some locations in Hamilton.

Unlike a previous Rogers service interruption, the telecom is clearly stating that this is due to a fibre cut caused by a local fire. Rogers’ team is already on site and working to fix this issue.

Like always, people have gone to Down Detector to note their experiences. Currently, the website indicates that more than 400 people have been affected by this service interruption.

Rogers states that this is not impacting wireless services, which makes sense given it’s a fibre issue.

Knowing that this is a fibre issue and with its team already on site, hopefully, this issue is resolved pretty soon. We’ll keep tabs on the situation and update this post as soon as we learn more details.
