Nazem Kadri on the move again?!

When the Flames signed forward Nazem Kadri as a free agent this past summer, they were expecting him to bring his career-high production from last season to Calgary. But Kadri has failed to replicate it and recent chatter has emerged that he could be traded out after the playoffs. So far in 2022-23, the veteran center has put up 51 points in 75 games, well below last season’s career-high 87 points with the Colorado Avalanche.

On top of that, there have been reports of a riff between he and head coach Darryl Sutter, which prompted Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman to point out Kadri had seen a recent reduction in his ice time.

While the veteran forward himself downplayed the chatter about this relationship with the bench boss, there remains doubts that he could be in the right place in Calgary…

One reader even asked The Athletic’s Eric Duhatschek if the Flames would attempt to trade Kadri this summer.
Duhatschek is cautious in his answer but explains how expensive free agents happen to struggle with their new clubs in the first season of their new contracts.

“But the short answer on trading Kadri is “not yet.” And that’s mainly because what we’ve seen from Kadri this season is often typical of what you see from expensive free agents in their first year with new teams — they struggle to meet the expectations associated with the lucre of their new contracts (in Kadri’s case, a seven-year, $49 million deal). Often, in Year 2 after settling in, they show better results.”

But the main thing is that even if the Flames wanted to part ways with Kadri after just one season, his full no-movement clause would be a significant hurdle in the situation, along with the six years left on his contract at $7 million annually.

Got a feeling Kadri will stay put…

More Pixel Tablet details emerge, confirm no ‘pro’ variant

We’ve known for a while that Google is working on a Pixel Tablet — the company has teased the tablet multiple times already. However, beyond snippets of information from Google, we’ve had to rely on leaks and rumours for everything else we know. Well, the latest leak indicates some previous information about the Pixel Tablet was incorrect, namely the existence of a Pixel Tablet Pro.

Researcher and leaker Kuba Wojciechowski took to Twitter to share a new round of information about Google’s upcoming tablet. Wojciechowski started by explaining new information that supersedes their previous leak about the Pro tablet, based on uncovered codenames ‘tangor’ and ‘tangorpro.’ In short, Wojciechowski learned that tangorpro actually replaces the tangor variant of the Pixel Tablet — the only major difference between the two devices was the chip, with tangor using the first-gen Tensor and tangorpro using Tensor G2.

Wojciechowski tweeted that Google cancelled the tangor project and that we’re likely to get one Pixel Tablet — the tangorpro variant.

Moreover, Wojciechowski shared some information on the tablet’s other specs, citing an anonymous source. The Pixel Tablet will reportedly include 8GB of Samsung LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of Kioxia UFS storage. The tablet will also sport a side-mounted fingerprint reader and a 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution display. Wojciechowski  noted details of the display driver, writing that it’s “typically used for driving the backlight layer on LCDs, which means that the Pixel Tablet most likely doesn’t have an OLED screen.”

The Pixel Tablet does have two docking station options, one with a speaker and one that’s just for charging, as previously rumoured.

Finally, Wojciechowski shared several pictures of a Pixel Tablet on a charging stand, but the pictures don’t really reveal much we didn’t already know about the device. The biggest piece of information is a sticker on the tablet with the acronym ‘EVT,’ which stands for “engineering validation test.” According to 9to5Google, EVT is a common step in building and testing a new device. The stickers also reference the two docking stations.

Surface hardware, pricing rumours emerge ahead of possible October event

Several details emerged about new, upcoming Microsoft Surface devices ahead of an expected announcement in October. According to the details, new Surface computers will sport updated Intel chips and possibly an ARM-based processor too.

The news comes from WinFuture (via The Verge). The rumours focus on a new 2-in-1 device, likely a Surface Pro 9, as well as a new clamshell laptop, likely the Surface Laptop 5. Both of these will likely run 12th Gen Intel CPUs, an upgrade from the 11th Gen CPUs available in the Surface Pro 8 and Laptop 4.

More specifically, WinFuture indicated we’ll see an Intel Core i5-1235U in the entry-level models and a Core i7-1255U at the higher end. Storage will likely max out at 1TB, while memory will hit up to 16GB.

However, WinFuture notes that the Surface Pro 9 could also offer an ARM processor, possibly branded as the Microsoft SQ3. Microsoft’s SQ chips were made in partnership with Qualcomm and typically were based on existing Snapdragon chips. Moreover, the SQ3 could support 5G this time around, which could be a major selling point for those seeking a connected computer.

Perhaps most interesting is that the SQ3 is rumoured to appear in a Surface Pro 9. Previously, Microsoft kept its SQ chips to the Surface Pro X line, which sported a more modern design. In other words, if Microsoft plans to include the SQ3 in the Pro 9, it could mean the company will end the Pro X line and that the Pro 9 might sport a new design.

No evidence of an AMD-powered Laptop 5 yet

As for the Surface Laptop 5, WinFuture says it hasn’t found any evidence of an AMD-powered version yet. That comes as a surprise since the last few versions of the Surface Laptop offered both Intel and AMD chips.

Interestingly, Surface chief Panos Panay posted a selfie with AMD CEO Lisa Su a few days ago, which seemed like a tease about an upcoming Surface powered by AMD. Plus, the company refreshed its Ryzen CPUs for laptops earlier this year and recently announced new chips for low-power laptops. So, who knows — it’d be a real surprise if there wasn’t an AMD option for the Laptop 5.

Finally, WinFuture shared some details about colour options and pricing. The Surface Pro 9 may have new colour options including ‘Forest’ green and a light blue ‘Sapphire,’ alongside the standard black and silver options. Plus, it will have a 13.5-inch screen again. The Laptop 5 on the other hand will also be available in a larger 15-inch variant again.

As for pricing, the Surface Pro 9 will reportedly start around €1,300 (about $1,720.50 CAD), while the Laptop 5 will start at €1,200 (roughly $1,588.15 CAD) for the 13.5-inch model and €1,500 (approximately $1,985.19 CAD) for the 15-inch version.

Like any leak, it’s important to take this information with a health dose of skepticism. We likely won’t know any of these details for sure until Microsoft announces the products. Which, according to another leak from Twitter user WalkingCat, the announcement event is scheduled for October 11th at 12pm ET. However, Microsoft hasn’t confirmed that timing.

15-inch MacBook Air could arrive in 2023, 12-inch version also coming

A new 15-inch MacBook Air could release as soon 2023, according to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The often-reliable source of Apple leaks goes on to say that a 12-inch MacBook is also in the works for a late 2023 or early 2024 release.

Gurman says that the upcoming MacBook Air will be a “wider version” of the recently revealed 13.6-inch lightweight laptop. Beyond this, little else is known about the laptop, though given the release timeline, it will likely feature a more powerful version of Apple’s recently revealed M2 chip.

Display analyst Ross Young says that this new Air Model will feature a 15.2-inch display that doesn’t include ProMotion or Mini LED technology.

Along with this larger Air, a smaller 12-inch laptop will release in late 2023 or 2024, according to Apple. The Cupertino, California-baed company previously sold a 12-inch MacBook that was discontinued back in 2019. Known as just the “MacBook,’ Apple first released the laptop back in 2015.

It featured a fanless design, a single USB-C port and was the first Apple laptop to offer its beleaguered, low-key-travel ‘Butterfly’ keyboard. It’s possible the new version of the 12-inch laptop could be a more modern take on this design. It’s worth noting that at one point Apple also sold an 11-inch MacBook Air.

At WWDC 2022, Apple finally revealed its M2-powered MacBook Air. Along with the new chip, the laptop ditches its wedge-shaped design for a flatter, more MacBook Pro (2021)-like look, and features reduced display bezels.
