Leaker says Apple considering price cut for iPhone 15 Plus

Apple may have plans to cut the price of the upcoming iPhone 15 Plus after poor sales of the 14 Plus, per a leaker with a decent track record.

As reported by Macworld and 9to5Mac, leaker ‘yeux1122‘ posted on South Korean blogging platform Naver that iPhone 14 Plus sales fell “far beyond” Apple’s lowest estimates. Because of this, yeux1122 says Apple is looking at new strategies with the iPhone 15 Plus to change that trend, including “seriously” considering a price reduction.

Moreover, yeux1122 noted that because Apple plans its phone releases years in advance, it’s too late to simply cancel the iPhone 15 Plus. The company pulled that move after the iPhone 12 mini and 13 mini missed sales expectations.

9to5 notes that this doesn’t come as much of a surprise given that reviewers urged potential customers away from the iPhone 14 Plus towards the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus offered very little over the iPhone 13, with the phones both using the A15 chip (albeit slightly updated in the 14 series) — why buy that when the iPhone 13 was available for less?

Although yeux1122 doesn’t specify how significant a price cut the iPhone 15 Plus would receive compared to the iPhone 14 Plus, 9to5 wrote it would need to be at least $100 USD (about $135.53 CAD) to have a significant impact.

Moreover, a reduction in iPhone 15 Plus price would likely mean the base iPhone 15 would see a price cut too. In Canada, the iPhone 14 Plus costs $150 more than the iPhone 14 — the iPhone 15 price would have to fall almost as much as the supposed 15 Plus cut to maintain that delta.

Of course, Apple won’t release the iPhone 15 line until September of 2023, leaving plenty of time for details and plans to change. Decent track record or not, you should take yeux1122’s leak with a healthy dose of skepticism.

Microsoft halts new sales in Russia amid invasion of Ukraine

Microsoft president Brad Smith announced that the company will “suspend all new sales” in Russia in a blog post published on March 4th.

The company behind Windows and Xbox is just the latest to announce a stop to some services in Russia amid the ongoing illegal invasion of Ukraine.

The announcement specifically addresses new sales and doesn’t mention existing service contracts, nor did it address why. The Verge points out that Microsoft has recently focused on cloud and support services — cutting off existing contracts would be “devastating” for both organizations and individuals using Windows, Office, Microsoft 365, Azure, and Xbox products in Russia.

“We are coordinating closely and working in lockstep with the governments of the United States, the European Union and the United Kingdom, and we are stopping many aspects of our business in Russia in compliance with governmental sanctions decisions,” Smith wrote.

Moreover, Smith wrote that Microsoft would “continue to work proactively to help cybersecurity officials in Ukraine defend against Russian attacks, including most recently a cyberattack against a major Ukrainian broadcaster.”

The move comes after Ukraine asked Sony and Microsoft to pause operations in Russia and Belarus. Microsoft’s ban on new sales in Russia also comes amid restrictions from several tech giants, including Apple and Netflix.

Pixel 6 helped Google set an ‘all-time quarterly sales record’

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, dropped its Q4 2021 earnings Tuesday evening. The numbers were impressive as usual, with 41 percent year-over-year growth. You can read all that here if you want. What’s more impressive, however, is that the Pixel 6 apparently set an all-time quarterly sales record.

Now, there are a few caveats here before we dig in. First, Google doesn’t break out specific numbers for hardware. Instead, as Android Police notes, the hardware is included in ‘Google Services,’ which covers Android, Chrome, Google Maps, Search, Google Play, and YouTube. In other words, there are a lot of big money makers in there for Google and no real way to estimate how much of that was from the Pixel line, or even the Pixel 6 specifically.

With that in mind, let’s look at what Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in the Q4 2021 earnings call:

“In Q4, we set all all-time quarterly sales record for Pixel. This came in spite of an extremely challenging supply-chain environment. The response from Pixel 6 from our customers and carrier partners was incredibly positive.”

Pichai also attributed some of the Pixel 6’s success to new artificial intelligence (AI) features, such as the new real-time translation tool. You can listen to the whole earnings call here.

While we can’t necessarily back up that statement with numbers (yet), Android Police did note that the Google Services segment is up, reporting over $69 (heh, nice) billion USD (about $87.5 billion CAD) in revenue in Q4. In 2020, the same segment reported $52.8 billion (roughly $66.99 billion CAD (heh, double nice)).

Considering Google launches Pixel flagships in the fall, usually around October or November, the company’s Q4 results usually include Pixel launch sales (even if we don’t get the exact numbers). And while I doubt that all of the difference between Q4 2021 and Q4 2020 came from Pixel 6 sales, we can likely attribute some of that increase to sales.

With all that in mind, it seems the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are proving popular with customers. Considering the various supply issues, software problems, and myriad other concerns with the phones, the sales record is even more impressive. Hopefully this marks a change for Google, which has previously struggled with its smartphone line.
