Samsung Display shows off futuristic waterdrop hinge that folds in and out

Samsung has shown off a prototype display revealing a smartphone that can fold 360 degrees. Samsung Display, the division of the company that focuses on screens, showed The Verge a new prototype screen and hinge at CES 2023.

The “Flex In & Out” display can rotate 360 degrees, allowing you to fold it, as you may have already assumed, in and out. Further, the foldable screen features a different hinge design, which creates a significantly less visible crease. This new hinge design, often called the “water-drop hinge,” lets the screen form a looser shape. It also enables the ability to fold in and out. According to The Verge, this hinge type also creates less stress on the panel.

Samsung has been toying with a display that can fold in and out for several years, according to Tom’s Guide. However, earlier iterations featured an S design with one section folding in and the other folding out. Unlike that design, this hinge can do both.

The Verge indicates that it’s possible the Z Fold 5 could feature this hinge, as a previous leak indicates that the phone will offer a less visible crease this year due to a waterdrop hinge design. That leak also suggests the Fold 5 could feature a 108-megapixel primary shooter, similar to the S22 Ultra.

With the Galax Z Fold 5 likely not launching until this summer, we’ll have a long time to wait until we know for sure. Samsung is expected to reveal its Galaxy S23 series later this month on February 1st.

Samsung’s Flex Hybrid OLED prototype is a 12.4-inch tablet that fits in your pocket

At CES 2023, Samsung showed off its new foldable prototype, the Flex Hybrid OLED, a tablet that can fold from one side and slide out on the other.

The phone starts off with a 4.2-inch display that can fold out to a 10.5-inch display with a 4:3 aspect ratio.  Then you can further increase the display size to 12.4-inches with a 16:10 aspect ratio.

The handset is capable of doing this by sliding out an extra two inches of screens from below the right-hand side of the device. This is pretty cool, as it allows you to fit a 12.4-inch OLED tablet in your pocket.

Samsung will reportedly show off two other display devices at CES 2023.  These devices are the Flex Slideable Solo, which expands from a 14.-inch OLED panel to a 17.3-inch screen by sliding the handset open. The other device is the Flex Slideable Duet, which slides from both sides of the screens to create the same size display.

Samsung Display shows off Flex G and Flex S form factors at CES 2022

Samsung showed off a few pretty cool prototype foldable smartphones at CES 2022. Based on what we know so far, these prototypes sport the South Korean tech giant’s Flex S and Flex G panels and come in multiple forms.

According to SamMobile, the Flex S is a tri-folding phone that can fold in and out in the form of an S. This allows for the smartphone to fold into a large tablet. The Flex G, on the other hand, is more compact. It’s also tri-folding and folds inwards so that no part of the display is visible when fully folded.

While I love using the Z Fold 3, I’m sometimes worried about the outer display since it’s always exposed. This G-shaped form factor keeps the device’s display protected when you’re not using it.

It’s important to point out that these are prototype devices, so it’s possible that this display technology may never be actually featured in a commercial Samsung smartphone. That said, the inwards tri-folding design could be pretty cool.
