Microsoft’s ‘Instant Hotspot’ feature can turn on your Samsung phone’s hotspot

The long-running battle to deeply integrate smartphones with Windows PCs has heated up in recent months, with Intel debuting its Unison software to take on other software like Microsoft’s Phone Link app. Meanwhile, Microsoft is working on a way to automatically connect Windows PCs to the hotspot on Samsung Galaxy smartphones through Phone Link.

Android Police spotted the feature, which is mentioned in Microsoft’s announcement blog post for the latest Windows 11 Preview Build, version 25231. According to that blog post, Phone Link enables an “instant hotspot” feature that lets you “securely start and connect to your phone’s Wi-Fi network without touching your phone.” Microsoft goes on to describe how it works:

“When your phone is within range it will appear in the Wi-Fi network list on your PC where a single click turns on the phone’s hotspot and connects to it. No more remembering and typing passwords or searching for hotspot settings on the phone. This provides an easier and faster way to repeatedly connect to your hotspot when you are on the go.”

To try out the feature, you’ll need a few things:

  • A Samsung device running One UI 4.1.1 or higher
  • A PC with both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • SIM card with a hotspot-capable plan
  • Windows 11 version 22H2 Build 22621 or higher
  • Phone Link desktop app in version v1.22082.111.0 or greater
Link To Windows phone app (pre-installed on Samsung devices) in version v1.22082.142.0 or higher

Microsoft notes that users should see a ‘What’s New’ dialogue on their PC, which they can use to set up the new Phone Link feature. Alternatively, open the Phone Link app and head to settings > Features > Instant Hotspot.

This feature will be particularly useful for those with Windows 11 PCs that don’t have built-in cellular (like the new Surface Pro 9). Of course, it won’t be available for everyone yet, in part because it’s still in preview, and in part because it’s limited to Samsung devices for the time being.

Samsung launches new Galaxy Book 2 in Canada

Samsung is launching its new Galaxy Book 2 in Canada today. The laptop joins the flagship PC lineup alongside the Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360 and Galaxy Book 2 Pro.

Samsung confirms that the Galaxy Book 2 features a 15.6-inch FHD IPS display, providing high-definition whether it be streaming, or browsing the web. Powering the laptop is a 12th Gen Intel Core processor. The Galaxy Book 2 is available with either a Core i5 or a Core i7 supporting it. The laptop also features LPDDR4x memory

Moreso, the Galaxy Book 2 sports a 54Wh battery. While the company hasn’t specified a rough battery life, Samsung confirms that it takes 30 minutes to gain a 40 percent charge. Plus, Samsung is carrying over its universal charger from previous Galaxy devices.

In addition, the unit comes with Windows 11 support and Samsung’s Knox security system protecting the privacy of users. The device can be secured via a fingerprint scan used to unlock the laptop.

When looking at ports, users will find two USB-C ports, two USB 3.2, an HDMI port, micro SD, HP, and Kensington Lock support.

Connectivity within the Galaxy ecosystem seems to be a focus for Samsung as well. The company confirms that users can sync the laptop with a Galaxy smartphone through Link to Windows. Samsung is even updating Quick Share and merging it with Link Sharing. Galaxy Book Smart Switch can also help carry over old data, photos and more from older PCs to the Galaxy Book 2.

Finally, the laptop is another example of Samsung’s commitment to sustainability. Minimizing its environmental footprint, the laptop is made from repurposed materials like fishing nets to produce eco-conscious material used for the touchpad holder and inner bracket.

The Graphite-coloured Galaxy Book 2 is available now on Samsung’s website as well as all major retailer partners across Canada. It starts at $989.99 for the 256GB model supporting an i5. The i7 model is available for $1119.99.

Samsung might ditch Qualcomm and Exynos chips for its next flagship

Reports coming out of South Korea suggest that Samsung wants to develop an application processor (AP) that will be “unique” to its line of Galaxy smartphones.

Up until now, Samsung’s flagship devices have used either Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset or Samsung Electronics LSI’s Exynos chipset, but new information from a Samsung townhall indicates a new chipset might be powering future Galaxy smartphones.

According to the South Korean publication iNews24, an employee questioned Samsung Mobile President TM Roh about the recent GOS app throttling debacle and how the company aims to resolve it, to which Roh replied that Samsung will “make an AP unique to the Galaxy.”

If materialized, the move will bring Samsung closer to Apple and Google, both of whom make chips exclusive to their devices. While Exynos maker Samsung Electronics LSI is Samsung Mobile’s subsidiary, its Exynos chips aren’t exclusive to Samsung devices like Tensor is to Pixel or the A15 is to the iPhone 13.

On the other hand, a report from BusinessKorea suggests that Samsung might deploy MediaTek’s mobile application processors to the upcoming Galaxy S22 FE and the Galaxy S23. Samsung has used MediaTek’s chipsets in the past, though it has been limited to the company’s budget and entry-level smartphones, and the flagships have always retained Qualcomm or Exynos chipsets.
