Galaxy Watch 5 series to gain advanced cycle-tracking features soon

Samsung has teamed up with Natural Cycles to bring advanced temperature-based menstrual cycle tracking to the Galaxy Watch 5 series.

Natural Cycles was founded in 2013, and provides an effective, natural method of birth control that is delivered in the form of an app. It uses a smart algorithm that is sensitive to subtle patterns in a woman’s cycle to determine daily fertility, based on basal body temperature and period data.

Now, with the Samsung partnership, it’s the first time that Natural Cycle’s innovative algorithm has been adapted for a smartwatch, allowing Samsung’s Watch 5 series to offer users more detailed insight into their menstrual cycle.

“As a company that’s grounded in science and technology, we are excited to partner with Samsung to deliver a premium experience that pushes women’s wellness forward,” said Dr. Raoul Scherwitzl, co-founder and co-CEO of Natural Cycles, in a press release.

The algorithm, paired with Samsung Watch 5 series’ new infrared temperature sensor allows for a sensor highly accurate overview of skin temperature changes as well as users’ menstrual cycle. All data is encrypted and stored on the user’s device itself, giving users more control of their wellness data and better peace of mind.

“Consumers can now easily track their menstrual cycle right from their wrist, combining Natural Cycles’ innovative fertility technology with Samsung’s superior temperature sensor to provide a more holistic understanding of their wellbeing,” said Hon Pak, vice president and head of digital health team, MX Business at Samsung Electronics. “This is another demonstration of Samsung’s open collaboration philosophy with other industry leaders to create better wellness experiences.”

The new skin temperature-based Cycle Tracking features will be available through the Samsung Health app on the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro within Q2, 2023. The feature will be available in Canada and 32 other markets.

Alleged Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 renders give us best look yet

This is the best leak yet of Samsung’s rumoured Galaxy Watch 5. These renders provide a look at the two upcoming watches from every angle. Since they were shared by Evan Blass (in collaboration with 91mobiles), they are likely to be pretty accurate.

The Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, the successor to the Watch 4 Classic, will no longer sport the beloved physical bezel. Additionally, it will only come in one 45mm size variant.

The base Galaxy Watch 5 will use a more straightforward design and will be available in 44mm and a smaller, unspecified size. Both variants will feature physical buttons on the right of their displays alongside LTE connectivity, GPS support, and 5ATM water resistance.

Further, both watches will feature Wear OS 3.5 with Samsung One UI Watch 4.5 (dumb name). Finally, according to a previous rumour, the watches will feature 10W charging.

We expect to see the watches alongside the Galaxy Flip 4 and Fold 4 sometime next month at an unannounced Unpacked event.

Galaxy Watch 5 series spotted in Samsung Health beta update

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro were both spotted in the latest Samsung Health app beta update.

9to5Google dug into the latest build of the Samsung Health app (6.22.0.069), and it mentions the two smartwatches with Galaxy Watch 4 placeholder images. Reportedly, last year, Samsung did the same, adding the Galaxy Watch 4 about a month before its launch.

Samsung’s Health beta app doesn’t show anything more about either of the smartwatches; however, it does confirm that Samsung is ditching its ‘Classic’ lineup this year. We’ve previously heard this leak, initially from GalaxyClubThat leak said there were three Galaxy catch codenames ‘Heart-S,’ ‘Heart-L’ and ‘Heart-Pro,’ which likely means the Galaxy Watch 5 will come in two size variants, and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro will come in a single variant.

Other Galaxy Watch 5 leaks suggest the Watch 5 Pro will use sapphire glass and titanium to improve the durability of the smartwatch. Additionally, the Watch 5 series will have bigger batteries than its predecessor.

It’s unclear when Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Watch 5 series, but it will likely be alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 foldables, sometime this summer.
