Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 Hands-on: Hitting a foldable design plateau

What’s most surprising about Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 is that it’s already in its 4th-gen version. As someone who spent a lot of time with the first and second-gen Z Fold, it’s fascinating to see how far Samsung has taken its foldable display technology design in a short period of time.

But if you were expecting a Galaxy Fold 2 or, arguably, even a Fold 3-like design leap with the Fold 4, you will be disappointed with Samsung’s latest flagship foldable.

With that in mind, it appears the South Korean tech giant’s foldable has hit a design plateau — at least to some extent. The overall look of the Fold 4 is nearly identical to the Fold 3, including its sleek matte rear and triple-rear vertically-oriented camera bump.

As expected, the device still unfolds like a book, giving you a 7.6-inch QXGA+ AMOLED inner display when unfolded and a more standard smartphone-like 6.2-inch HD+ secondary screen when folded. Both screens also still feature a 120Hz refresh rate and, overall, look stunning.

This year, the Z Fold 4’s hinge is slightly thinner than its predecessor, coming in at 15.8mm vs 16mm with the Fold 3. In practice, the 3mm really doesn’t make the phone feel any different in your hand when it’s not folded. The Fold 4 is a very thicc smartphone when folded.

It would have been great if Samsung found a way to push the Fold 4’s design forward in a meaningful way and make the device feel more like a standard handset when it’s not unfolded. On the other hand, the display’s glass feels great and more like a traditional smartphone screen, just like the Fold 3.

Other notable changes include Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip and a revamped main shooter with increased megapixels. The Fold 4’s primary camera now comes in at 50-megapixels f/1.8, while the ultra-wide hits 12-megapixels f/2.2 and the telephoto (3x optical zoom) comes in at 10-megapixels f/2.4, just like last year.

The primary sensor now comes in at 50-megapixels f/1.8, with the ultra-wide hitting 12-megapixels f/2.2 and the telephoto (3x optical zoom) coming in at 10-megapixels f/2.4.

Galaxy Fold 4 front camera

The under-display inner camera is identical to last year at 4-megapixels f/2.8 and blends in slightly better with the smartphone’s display. Finally, the cover camera is still 10-megapixels f/2.2.

In theory, the 50-megapixel shooter should offer improved low-light performance and images that better retain quality when blown up. In my very brief tests, the camera performed well, even under low-light conditions, and is a notable step above the Fold and Fold 2’s shooter, though the photos seem very similar to the quality of the Fold 3’s primary lens.

It’s also worth noting that Samsung has stuck with the same 4-megapixel f/1.8 under-display camera this year. The Fold 4 seems to take adequate selfies that are a cut above what we saw last year with the Fold 3, but I can’t help but wish Samsung would stick with the hole-punch shooter design it features in other devices since it still allows for an overall higher quality camera.

I appreciate the company’s efforts to experiment with under-display camera tech, but given the lens is still obviously visible despite Samsung’s claims (especially with darker content), an ‘Infinity-O’ shooter would have been preferable. The 10-megapixel cover camera also remains identical at 10-megapixels f/2.2.

Unfortunately, the Fold 4 doesn’t feature a Note-like in-device storage slot for the S Pen like some rumours indicated it would. The stylus is sold separately, and the only way to store the stylus is with a specific case that Samsung sells, just like the Fold 3.

Given that the Fold 4 is such an expensive smartphone, it would have been great if Samsung offered the S Pen as a pack-in alongside the device, especially since the Note series remains dead.

At this point, the foldable smartphone concept is established, and as far as the clamshell vs book-like argument, I’ve always preferred the latter. The design has a real utility since it allows you to carry around a tablet in your pocket. Despite how cute and cool the Flip series is, it just can’t compete in this respect.

Still, at this price, the Fold series remains far from accessible to most smartphone buyers.

Galaxy Fold 4

In Canada, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 starts at $2,269 for the 256GB version, and is available in ‘Gray Green,’ ‘Moon Beige’ and ‘Phantom Black.’ The 512GB model starts at $2,429.

The Z Fold 4 will be available to pre-order on August 10th and releases on August 26th. For more on Samsung’s Unpacked, check out our Galaxy Flip 4 impressions. We’ll have a full review of the Fold 4 in the coming weeks.

Samsung officially reveals the Galaxy Z Fold 4 with 50-megapixel primary shooter

During Samsung’s foldable-focused Unpacked event, the tech giant finally revealed its next-generation Galaxy Z Fold 4 foldable smartphone, confirming several reports and leaks that have been swirling for the last few months surrounding the device.

This year’s Fold refresh — which still features the ‘Z’ moniker — is essentially the same as the Fold 3, with most of the device’s key upgrades being internal hardware related. This includes its foldable 7.6-inch QXGA+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and 6.2-inch HD+ secondary screen with a 120Hz screen.

Size-wise, the Fold 4’s hinge mechanism feels slightly thinner than its predecessor’s, resulting in the smartphone being overall slightly thinner when folded at 15.8mm vs 16mm with the Fold 3.

As expected, the S Pen support returns, though the foldable still doesn’t feature a built-in Note-like storage slot, and the stylus doesn’t come with the device. Similar to last year’s Fold 3, the S Pen is sold separately alongside Samsung’s case that offers built-in S Pen storage.

On the rear, the Z Fold 4’s triple-rear camera array is laid out vertically like its predecessor’s. However, there are shooter upgrades under the hood. The primary sensor now comes in at 50-megapixels f/1.8, with the ultra-wide hitting 12-megapixels f/2.2 and the telephoto (3x optical zoom) coming in at 10-megapixels f/2.4.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 features a slightly bigger battery than the Flip 3

Samsung has announced a new slate of foldable products, including a new Galaxy Z Flip phone.

The Z Flip 4 looks very similar to last year’s Z Flip 3, but it features Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, which should give it a nice boost in both power and battery efficiency.

Samsung has also upped the battery this year from 3,300 mAh to 3,700 mAh, so theoretically, the Flip 4 should last longer than last year’s Flip 3.

Regarding cameras, there are two 12-megapixel shooters on the outside and a single 10-megapixel camera on the inside of the foldable. This is the same camera setup as last year’s Z Flip 3.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is being sold via the carriers and Samsung in Canada in ‘Bora Purple,’ ‘Blue,’ ‘Pink Gold’ and ‘Graphite’ colourways. Pricing starts at $1,259 for the 128GB model and 512GB option costs $1,499.

You can order a ‘Bespoke Edition’ Flip 3 directly from Samsung.com, allowing you to customize the colours of the Flip 4. Samsung says it offers over 75 different colour combinations with ‘Yellow,’ ‘White,’ ‘Navy,’ ‘Khaki’ and ‘Red on the front and back, plus ‘Silver,’ ‘Black’ and ‘Gold’ frame options.

Notably, the Flip 4 can fast charge at 25-watts, but you’ll need to get a separate charger since there isn’t one included in the box.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 Hands-on: Under the radar and impressive

Samsung’s latest foldable lineup has arrived. I was only able to use the Galaxy Z Flip 4 for a brief amount of time, but I walked away very impressed with the tech giant’s latest clamshell offering.

The Z Flip 4 feels effortlessly premium, and the foldable display gives off the impression of glass more than ever before.

That said, the Flip 4 is very similar to the Flip 3, with the battery, chipset and a few other elements being this year’s key upgrades. Still, this is a compelling buy over existing Flip devices, and, more importantly, against standard flagships from other manufacturers.

A Flip? More like a Triple Axel

I’ve always been unimpressed with how little spotlight the Flip series gets compared to the Fold.

It feels like the most reasonable foldable in Samsung’s lineup since it costs the same as a standard high-end smartphone and isn’t larger than my existing device. While the Fold might add a unique tablet-like experience, it’s extremely expensive and almost too big to fit comfortably in your pocket.

The Flip 4, on the other hand, is just cool.

Samsung likely could have done a slightly better job of making it compete more directly with flagships, but for what it is, the Flip 4 is an extremely capable smartphone.

Clad in glass and metal, the Flip 4 feels very high-end, and this year Samsung has added a matte finish to the glass that feels great. I didn’t mind the gloss on last year’s model, but this matte option does do a slightly better job at repelling fingerprints.

Samsung has also built the fingerprint scanner into the power button, and notably, the buttons felt very clicky and offer nice feedback.

The last feature worth mentioning is the front screen which is more or less the same as last year’s. During my time with it, it felt nice and responsive, but it’s unclear if it’s brighter. Still, being able to swipe through widgets and notifications should be easy to do in most situations.

Keeping up with the Joneses

Inside, the Flip 4 is Qualcomm’s well-regarded Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, 8GB of RAM and a slightly larger 3,700 mAh battery.

While 3,700 mAh isn’t a massive battery, it’s a larger cell than the Flip 3 and combined with a more power-efficient chipset, the foldable should offer significantly more battery than its predecessor. However, we’ll need to test the Flip 4’s battery life when we get our hands on a review device.

Overall, the Flip 4 felt snappy and modern. During my brief time with the smartphone, I couldn’t run any games on it, but the phone’s specs should allow for it to hold up well with most titles. The only issue will be how fast the relatively small battery depletes while doing high-performance tasks.

The camera array is one area where the Z Flip 4 lags behind the competition. There are two 12-megapixel lenses on the outside and a hole-punch camera on the inside for the selfies. There’s nothing wrong with 12-megapixel lenses — the iPhone has been using them for years — but Samsung touts the Fold 4’s 50-megapixel main camera as offering flagship quality. It would have been nice to give the Flip that much camera power, too.

Like last year’s Flip 3, the Flip 4 allows you to take selfies using the main camera lens with the tiny front screen. As expected, this is still an easy way to step up your selfie game.

Give me more, please

Other specs include an official IPX8 rating, which means the Flip 4 isn’t dustproof, so you’ll need to be careful since a single grain of sand could sneak into the device’s hinge.

Overall, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is an excellent device, and to some extent, I’m surprised people are still buying standard Galaxy S22 devices instead of the Flip series. Perhaps this year will change that, and the foldable form factor will finally catch on.

We’ll have a full review of the Flip 3 in the coming weeks.

The Flip 4 is available to pre-order now from Samsung for $1,259. The phone comes in ‘Bora Purple,’ ‘Pink Gold,’ ‘Blue’ and ‘Graphite.’

During Samsung’s latest Unpacked event, the tech giant also revealed the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Buds 2 Pro.

Samsung’s Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 images leak online two days before launch

Samsung’s Unpacked event is just two days away, and real-life photos of its upcoming flagships, the Galazy Z Flip 4 and the Z Fold 4, have already leaked online, showing off the device’s every nook and corner.

As shared by Twitter user @noh_tech (now deleted), the Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 appear in a bluish gray and blue colour variant, respectively.

The Galaxy Fold 4 looks like it has a smaller hinge area than its predecessor and appears to be wider overall in hand. On the other hand, the Flip 4 appears to have flatter edges alongside slimmer metal coating around the hinge.

And while the crease still appears to be there in the leaked photos, according to Samsung, the display on the new devices is expected to be smoother with a less prominent crease.

Check out the leaked images of the devices, courtesy of @noh_tech:

What do you want to see at Samsung’s August Unpacked event?

Samsung’s upcoming August 10th Unpacked event is quickly approaching, with devices like the Galaxy Fold 4, Galaxy Flip 4, Galaxy Watch 5 and the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro on the way.

This week’s Community Question is: what are you most excited to see at the keynote?

I’m a big fan of foldables and especially the Galaxy Fold lineup, so naturally, I’m excited to see the Fold 4. This year’s handset will reportedly sport an improved camera setup, which was one of the Fold 3’s only downsides. Additionally, we expect up to 16GB of RAM, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip and an improved under-display camera.

I’m also hoping to see a tease of something entirely new. A previous rumour indicated that Samsung will show off another mysterious foldable at this Unpacked event. That doesn’t seem like the case anymore based on recent rumours, but there’s still a possibility we might catch a glimpse of an entirely new device.

Either way, we’ll need to wait until August 10th to see what’s coming. For more on Samsung’s foldable-focused Unpacked, check out my story that outlines everything I expect to see at the event.

Let us know in the comments below what you are most excited to see at Samsung’s upcoming Unpacked.

Samsung’s Android 13-based One UI 5 beta arrives in select countries

Samsung’s Android 13-based One UI 5 beta is now available in some countries, including South Korea, Germany, and the U.S. — bummer for Canadian Samsung fans.

Per Android Police, Samsung seems to have jumped the gun a little and started releasing the beta ahead of making an official announcement (likely, the company will release one soon). Moreover, Samsung usually starts deploying One UI betas in South Korea and then expands to other countries a few weeks later — that doesn’t appear to be the case this time.

So far, the One UI 5 beta update clocks in at 2.5GB, sports the August 2022 security patch and brings several new features. We’ll likely learn more about the new features as the One UI 5 beta becomes widely available, but some early additions include:

  • Up to 16 preset colour themes based on the current wallpaper (this is in addition to 12 colour options for the home screen, icons, and quick settings panel).
  • The ability to stack multiple widgets on top of each other (this was available on some phones in One UI 4.1).
  • Improvements to the Camera app, including Pro mode and the zoom bar.

Android Police says that there are only limited spots for testing the One UI 5 beta. Those interested should grab the Samsung Members app (available on the Play Store or Galaxy Store) and then use it to register for the One UI Beta Program. Once registered, users should be able to download the One UI beta like any other software update.

It’s worth noting, however, that the One UI 5 beta currently isn’t available in Canada. That said, getting the Members apps now could give you a headstart if and when the beta becomes available. Moreover, like with the Android Beta Program on Pixel phones, installing the One UI beta won’t affect your apps or data, but you will need to format your device if you leave the beta.

Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra rumoured to sport 200-megapixel camera

Samsung is widely expected to launch new foldable phones next week, but leakers are already looking ahead to Samsung’s next big phone launch: the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Although not due for another few months at least, Samsung is likely hard at work developing its next flagship Galaxy S phones. And, if recent rumours are accurate, the Galaxy S23 Ultra will boast a huge camera upgrade thanks to a 200-megapixel sensor.

Leaker Ice Universe (via PhoneArena) is “almost 100% sure” the Galaxy S23 Ultra will sport an unreleased ‘HP2’ 200-megapixel camera sensor. That’d be a huge upgrade over the current 108-megapixel sensor in the S22 Ultra.

Android Police notes this isn’t the first time the S23 Ultra 200-megapixel sensor rumour has surfaced, but the addition of the HP2 sensor does add some weight to it. The publication notes the unreleased HP2 will presumably be better than the current ISOCELL HP1 and HP3 200-megapixel sensors. However, we’ll have to wait for the HP2’s release to get an idea of how it’ll be better than the other options.

Moreover, while a 200-megapixel sensor certainly sounds impressive, it’s worth keeping in mind that pure megapixel counts don’t always mean a lot. Like with other high-megapixel sensors, the S23 Ultra might leverage the HP2 for pixel binning, a practice of combining multiple pixels to form one larger pixel. Larger pixels means more light, more light means better results (usually, but things are often more complicated).

Coupled with the fact that first-gen camera hardware tends to have teething issues, and the Galaxy S23 Ultra may end up in a weird spot with great potential but middling performance. That’s what happened when Samsung made the switch to the 108-megapixel sensor with the S20 Ultra — reviews were critical of the camera, and it suffered from a variety of issues. However, Samsung refined the experience over the next few phone releases.

Ultimately, we’re still far from the Galaxy S23 release. It’s early for rumours, and it’s good to take any information with a healthy dose of skepticism. In other words, don’t bet on a 200-megapixel S23 Ultra just yet.
