Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 rumoured to sport 1TB of storage

It looks like Samsung’s Fold 4 is getting a storage bump this year.

Though the foldable smartphone’s release is still a few months out, SamMobile has learned that there will be one variant of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 that will sport 1TB of internal storage. This is a substantial storage jump as the Fold 3 topped out at 512GB of storage.

Now that Samsung has ditched the Note series, it seems that more devices will offer the 1TB internal storage variant. For example, Samsung’s S22 Ultra also featured 1TB variant.

SamMobile believes that Samsung will also offer the Fold 4 in 256GB and 512GB variants, similar to the Fold 3.

1TB of storage will undoubtedly cost a lot, but this will be one of the only choices for those who want more storage as the Fold 4 will likely lack a microSD card slot. That said, you can always upload your photos, videos and more to the cloud.

Samsung will likely launch the Galaxy Fold 4 at an Unpacked event sometime this August or September.

Samsung launches new Galaxy Book 2 in Canada

Samsung is launching its new Galaxy Book 2 in Canada today. The laptop joins the flagship PC lineup alongside the Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360 and Galaxy Book 2 Pro.

Samsung confirms that the Galaxy Book 2 features a 15.6-inch FHD IPS display, providing high-definition whether it be streaming, or browsing the web. Powering the laptop is a 12th Gen Intel Core processor. The Galaxy Book 2 is available with either a Core i5 or a Core i7 supporting it. The laptop also features LPDDR4x memory

Moreso, the Galaxy Book 2 sports a 54Wh battery. While the company hasn’t specified a rough battery life, Samsung confirms that it takes 30 minutes to gain a 40 percent charge. Plus, Samsung is carrying over its universal charger from previous Galaxy devices.

In addition, the unit comes with Windows 11 support and Samsung’s Knox security system protecting the privacy of users. The device can be secured via a fingerprint scan used to unlock the laptop.

When looking at ports, users will find two USB-C ports, two USB 3.2, an HDMI port, micro SD, HP, and Kensington Lock support.

Connectivity within the Galaxy ecosystem seems to be a focus for Samsung as well. The company confirms that users can sync the laptop with a Galaxy smartphone through Link to Windows. Samsung is even updating Quick Share and merging it with Link Sharing. Galaxy Book Smart Switch can also help carry over old data, photos and more from older PCs to the Galaxy Book 2.

Finally, the laptop is another example of Samsung’s commitment to sustainability. Minimizing its environmental footprint, the laptop is made from repurposed materials like fishing nets to produce eco-conscious material used for the touchpad holder and inner bracket.

The Graphite-coloured Galaxy Book 2 is available now on Samsung’s website as well as all major retailer partners across Canada. It starts at $989.99 for the 256GB model supporting an i5. The i7 model is available for $1119.99.

Galaxy Watch 5 series spotted in Samsung Health beta update

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro were both spotted in the latest Samsung Health app beta update.

9to5Google dug into the latest build of the Samsung Health app (6.22.0.069), and it mentions the two smartwatches with Galaxy Watch 4 placeholder images. Reportedly, last year, Samsung did the same, adding the Galaxy Watch 4 about a month before its launch.

Samsung’s Health beta app doesn’t show anything more about either of the smartwatches; however, it does confirm that Samsung is ditching its ‘Classic’ lineup this year. We’ve previously heard this leak, initially from GalaxyClubThat leak said there were three Galaxy catch codenames ‘Heart-S,’ ‘Heart-L’ and ‘Heart-Pro,’ which likely means the Galaxy Watch 5 will come in two size variants, and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro will come in a single variant.

Other Galaxy Watch 5 leaks suggest the Watch 5 Pro will use sapphire glass and titanium to improve the durability of the smartwatch. Additionally, the Watch 5 series will have bigger batteries than its predecessor.

It’s unclear when Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Watch 5 series, but it will likely be alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 foldables, sometime this summer.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 rumoured specs surface online

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 isn’t expected to launch until Q3 later this year, but that hasn’t stopped the likes of leaker Yogesh Brar from detailing the upcoming foldable smartphone before it’s officially unveiled.

According to Brar, the Z Flip 4 will sport a 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. Additionally, the foldable will sport a 2.1-inch outer display (up from last year’s 1.9-inches) as well as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage.

The handset is also poised to feature the same camera setup as last year’s model, offering two 12-megapixel rear shooters, and a 10-megapixel selfie camera. This marks a stark difference between this year’s foldables as Samsung’s Fold 4 is expected to sport a 50-megapixel primary camera.

Lastly, the phone is rumoured to feature One UI 4.1 based on Android 12, as well as a 3,700mAh battery with 25W wired charging and 10W wireless.

Samsung is expected to reveal the Flip 4 alongside the Fold 4 at an Unpacked event in likely August or September

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 alleged specs leak online

Samsung’s next Unpacked event is coming soon and with it, an onslaught of leaks about what we’ll see at this year’s event. Though we don’t know exactly when the event will be, we know that this time of year is for the company’s foldable offerings, the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series, and today’s leak is about the Z Fold 4.

Leaker Yogesh Brar has revealed the specs for the rumoured Z Fold 4.

Going by Brar’s leak, the phone will feature the same sized outer and inner display compared to last year’s Z Fold 3, both with 120Hz refresh rate panels. We’re also expecting the same 4,400mAh battery and up to 512GB of storage.

Additionally, we’ll see some changes to the processor, as Samsung will reportedly use a trio of cameras with a 50-megapixel primary shooter, 12-megapixel ultra-wide, and a 12-megapixel 3x telephoto shooter. According to a previous tweet made by Ice Universe, the 3x optical will be superior to all other Samsung devices, even better than the S22 Ultra.

Samsung will also improve the under-display camera on the Fold 4. According to Brar’s tweet, the Fold 4 will feature a 16-megapixel UDC, whereas last year’s model only had a 4-megapixel sensor.

In my review of the Galaxy Fold 3, I didn’t find the UDC to be all that useful:

While the UDC is cool, it’s pretty unnecessary when there are so many other options. It’s more of a webcam for video conferencing and not a great one at that. While pictures taken with it are too bright and lack detail, you can just ignore it and take selfies with the Z Fold 3’s several other cameras.

Perhaps this time around with an improved sensor, the UDC will be worthwhile.

Samsung is expected to have its foldable Unpacked event this August or September.

Samsung expected to cut production of its phones in 2022

Samsung is reportedly cutting the production of its phones in 2022. The initial plan was to manufacture 310 million units. However, due to a potential downturn in the economy, Samsung is preparing to scale back to produce only 280 million units.

While the cuts may not seem overly huge, Samsung is scaling production across its entire lineup of smartphones. This results in fewer devices across the entry-level devices all the way up to the premium flagship models.

Samsung, like many other companies, expects the economy to worsen before it gets better. As a result of COVID-19, global inflation, and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Samsung is battening down the hatches so to speak. Scaling back 30 million units can be a reflection of Samsung’s expectations for the remainder of 2022.

Due to inflations hitting key markets around the globe, including North America, many companies expect consumers will be more cautious of their spending. As a result, these companies expect sales, even sales of affordable devices, to be affected in the process.

Samsung is not the only major smartphone company that is scaling back this year. Reports claim that Apple is also cutting production of its iPhone SE by 20 percent in 2022.

The landscape of the economy continues to fluctuate week to week. It’s difficult to pinpoint or estimate when larger companies will be able to regain their traction. Between supply chain hurdles and the effects of lower consumer spending, tech companies are facing a number of blockades.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 renders show off thinner and boxier design

A new concept video reveals what Samsung’s often-rumoured Galaxy Z Fold 4 might look like.

This concept comes from Technizo Concept, and it’s based on previous leaks and CAD-based renders.

The Fold 4 sports a more boxy, flatter design compared to last year’s model. The cameras protrude from the back, but there’s no island for the sensors, unlike its predecessor. This is a design that’s evidently inspired by the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

The Fold 4’s display is also wider than the Fold 3, and it sports a side-facing fingerprint scanner on the right-hand side alongside its volume up and down buttons.

Unlike previous rumours we’ve seen, this latest leak indicates the Fold 4 won’t feature a storage slot for the S Pen.

It’s possible that the Galaxy Fold 4 will feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, but when Qualcomm listed the name of partners that will be utilizing the new processor, the company omitted Samsung from the list.

Finally, the Fold 4’s display crease is expected to be not as pronounced as the Fold 3’s, and it will likely feature a smaller hinge.

We expected Samsung to announce the phone in August or September later this year.

Samsung shows off its 200-megapixel sensor with very large picture

Last year, Samsung unveiled its 200-megapixel image sensor for smartphones, the ISOCELL HP1. While it’s rumoured that Motorola’s upcoming flagship handset will feature the sensor, Samsung is now giving the world a first look at it in action.

The company printed a 28-meter-wide and 22-meter high photograph using the camera module. Samsung says that it went all out with a 200-megapixel sensor, but that it’s still under development.

“I have always wondered just how big you could go when it comes to printing out a 200MP image,” said Minhyuk Lee, an engineer from the team at Samsung’s System LSI Business”

Samsung also printed a 616 square meter image on twelve different 2.3-meter-long pieces of fabric and stitched it together.

The 200-megapixel sensor will use a ChameleonCell pixel binning to group four or 16 pixels into a large single pixel. This will result in pictures taken with a 50-megapixel sensor with 1.28-micron pixels or a 12.5-megapixel sensor with 2.56-micron pixels.

While it won’t have the picture quality to print out 28 x 22 meter wide photographs, it will result in brighter images and thus giving us some of the best nighttime photography we’ve ever seen.

Samsung will probably wait to put this sensor in its Galaxy S23 series next year.

Samsung’s 200-megapixel camera to be included in upcoming Motorola phone: report

The general manager of Lenovo Mobile has teased an upcoming flagship device on China-based social network Weibo, according to SamMobile.

The handset is rumoured to be called the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra, a smartphone that will likely receive an exclusive China launch. However, what’s important about this device is that it’s expected to feature Samsung’s new 200-megapixel camera sensor, the ‘ISOCELL HP1.’ The teaser also says that the smartphone will off “a new benchmark for image experience.”

The 200-megapixel sensor features 0.64µm pixels and supports 2×2 pixel binning in order to produce 50-megapixel images with a large 1.28µm pixel sensor. Additionally, the phone is rumoured to feature a 50-megapixel ultrawide and a 12-megapixel telephoto, with a 60-megapixel selfie shooter on the front.

Additionally, the phone is rumoured to feature a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor, 6.7-inch Full HD+ OLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate, 4,500mAh battery and 125W fast charging.

After several months, Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 3 is still great

After six months, does Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 3 still offer a great experience?

I still find myself attached to Samsung’s latest foldable smartphone. It might just be that I’m a sucker for foldable smartphones, or that this is the only one I can officially buy in Canada. Either way, I continue to find this phone a pleasure to use.

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 3 doesn’t feature the best cameras or display, but it still delivers an excellent overall package.

Currently, the phone is on sale for $2,084, which is $150 off its original pricing. $2,084 is pretty expensive for a smartphone, but when the Fold 4 hits stores later this year, the Fold 3 should dip further in cost.

Tablet in your pocket

The Galaxy Fold 3 is a tablet that fits in your pocket, which I find extremely useful. I write a lot — sometimes on the go — and I’m not a pen and paper guy. Because of this, I often find myself writing on my smartphone, and the tablet-sized Fold 3 is perfect for that.

Samsung’s Fold 3 keyboard splits into two different parts, perfectly aligning with where your thumbs are. This helps make the keyboard easier to use for longer periods, especially when compared to a regular smartphone.

Additionally, the larger viewing experience is great for watching content alongside the fantastic keyboard. Having a mini-sized pocket tablet with a 7.6-inch display with a 1768 x 2208 pixel resolution is good for watching my favourite shows, movies and YouTube videos. Even though its pixel resolution isn’t the highest on the market, colour accuracy is pleasing, blacks are dark enough, and whites are bright.

On top of watching content, the Fold 3’s 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling, swiping and gaming buttery smooth.

I typically hate playing games on my smartphone, but the Z Fold 3 makes the experience great. The larger display makes it easier to see what’s going on, and your thumbs aren’t fumbling over each other because the display isn’t too small.

The bad

Yes, there’s still a crease in the Fold 3’s display. My best advice is to get over it, but unfortunately, not everyone will be able to do so. For those who can’t, this — and, likely the upcoming generation of foldables — might not be for you.

The Galaxy Fold 3’s camera also doesn’t live up to other devices like the S22 Ultra; however, it’s still great.

The Cover display works as a viewfinder, making the primary shooters usable for selfies. Though not on par with the S22 Ultra’s shooter, the Fold 3’s cameras still offer decent quality images. For example, you’re able to make out the hair follicles on my beard, and the colour accuracy is on point.

Additionally, pictures are sharp, bright and vivid. The overall look of the images is similar to the S22 Ultra, but the S22 Ultra’s low-light photography is better.

Something else worth considering is the Fold 3’s battery life. The 4,400mAh battery offers about six hours of screen-on time on a normal day of usage. Six hours of screen time is definitely not the best on the market, but I’ve experienced worse.

What’s next

The Samsung Galaxy Fold 3 offers an all-around great experience, but its price is hefty. Later this year, Samsung is expected to unveil three more foldables, including the successor to the Fold 3 and Flip 3 and an unknown device that some predict will feature a rollable display.

The Fold 4 is rumoured to feature a similar design and experience to its predecessor. Regarding the Fold 4, leaker Ice Universe says this is more of an iterative design akin to a “Fold 3s” instead of the Fold 4.

Other than a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor or, possibly, the unreleased Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ and improved ultra-thin glass, the Fold 4 won’t offer much of an upgrade over its predecessor, according to leaks. While I can’t speak to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+, the 8 Gen 1 isn’t a significant improvement in power compared to the Snapdragon 888 in the Fold 3.

With that being said, for those who want the Fold 3 but don’t want to pay a lot of money, it might be worth waiting for the Galaxy Fold 4 to release in Q3 2022. Following the Fold 4’s launch, the Fold 3 should — in theory — drop in price. Since you won’t be missing out on a lot with the successor, the Fold 3 with a lower price might be even more appealing than the Fold 4.

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 3 is a top-of-the-line device. Sure, it’s hefty, but it sports flagship features a Snapdragon 888 processor, 12GB of RAM, 4,400mAh battery, a triple camera setup and two high-quality displays. The Fold 3 is a total beast that I’ve used for months now and don’t plan to put down any time soon.
