Samsung tablet capable of folding may be closer than we think

At CES 2023, some of the tablets shown off by companies included foldable devices, such as Samsung Display’s Flex Hybrid. It’s rumoured that Samsung’s first folding tablet could become a real product later this year.

Twitter user @Tech_Reve dropped a tip regarding the tablet, stating that it could launch alongside the Galaxy Tab S9. Despite not being a reputable leaker community, the user also revealed the tablet’s name — the ‘Galaxy Z Tab.’

This isn’t the first time speculation has circulated about a foldable tablet from the company, with reports going back to August 2022 about the foldable device.

Although no word has come from the tech giant directly, the rumours are gaining traction, with some believing the jump from phone models like the Galaxy Z Flip line to tablets not being unreasonable. If select Galaxy smartphones can fold, why shouldn’t the tablets?

Regardless of if Samsung follows through, it will be interesting to see if anything comes from these rumours, especially with the company tinkering with the concept openly now.

Samsung Galaxy S23 series wirelessly charges a bit longer than predecessor

Sometimes newer isn’t always better.

In a recent comparison conducted by Phone Arenawe learned that the Galaxy S22 might feature faster charging than the Galaxy S23.

According to the report, the S23 Ultra takes about 40 minutes longer than the S22 Ultra to charge from 1 to 100 percent when wirelessly charging.

Phone Arena used Samsung’s EP-P2400 15W wireless charging to avoid any inconsistencies in the testing process.

Phone Arena also tested the Galaxy S23 Plus, which charges 15 minutes longer and the normal S23, which takes 16 minutes longer to recharge fully. It’s worth noting that the S23 Plus and S23 have slightly larger batteries than their predecessors.

Phone Arena tested the iPhone 14 Pro series as well, which took pretty long to charge, but it’s worth noting the 14 Pro Max has a comparable charge time to the S23 Ultra.

The S23 series likely takes longer to charge due to overheating protection. However, Samsung’s own documentation says the S23 offers an enhanced level of heat dissipation for the S23. It’s also unclear why the S22 Ultra, which offers the same battery as the S23 Ultra, takes longer to charge.

Phone Arena is using a 15W wireless charger, which isn’t the best charging source, as OnePlus offers a 45W wireless charger; however, the S23 Ultra and S22 Ultra only offer 15W wireless charging, so it makes sense to use this medium.

Samsung Galaxy S23 owners tell of blurry and smudged spots in photos

Despite a camera-focused update being released in April of 2023, several Galaxy S23 and S23+ users continue to face a hardware defect with the phone’s camera, with reported blurriness and smudging appearing in photos.

The problem seems to be affecting non-Ultra Galaxy S23 users, with some reporting seeing a blurry and smudged spot on the left side of all photos taken from the S23/S23+’s 50-megapixel primary camera in landscape orientation.

What may sound like a minuscule problem is made bigger by the fact that the affected area renders text unreadable, making documents and messages practically useless.

The Reddit user ‘Switch01‘ took to the social media site to complain about the hardware bug, as well as Samsung’s refusal to acknowledge the issue thus far.

Although big camera sensors in modern smartphones have been known to cause blurring across the edges of photos, more information has revealed that this is the problem plaguing certain S23s. The smudging has only been reported on the left side of the screen, with not all S23 users reporting a problem.

Additionally, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, which features a larger 200-megapixel primary camera does not display a blurriness problem.

With over a month passing since the initial complaints, the South Korean tech giant has not acknowledged the issue yet. Users who have sent their phones to the company for repair had the device returned in the same condition, with reports of Samsung claiming the problem was a characteristic of the big camera sensor rather than a hardware issue.

While an update that focused on the phone’s camera was released in April, it looks like users facing the dreaded photo blurring will have to wait for Samsung to take action toward rectifying the issue.

Google’s Pixel Fold might have a better display than the Z Fold 5

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 might feature a worse display than the Pixel Fold.

According to The Elec, it looks like the Z Fold 5 will sport Samsung Display’s M12 material set (the material used to create OLED panels) for OLED displays, similar to what was available on the Z Fold 4, Z Flip 4 and the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. Now, Samsung is working on the M13 and M14 material sets, but Google will get the first taste of the new technology.

The Pixel Fold will reportedly use the M13 material sets, compared to the Z Flip 5 and the Z Fold 5, which will use only the M12 material sets, similar to their predecessors. It would be strange for Google to opt for the M13 sets, as the company isn’t usually ahead of the game regarding components. And it’d be odd for Samsung to use the M12 sets if it knows Google’s displays are ahead of its own devices.

The Elec also indicates that Apple’s iPhone 15 models will use M12-based displays. This is an upgrade for base iPhone users as the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus used the M11 sets; however, iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max already use the M12-based displays.

The rumours also suggest Samsung Display is building a custom set dubbed ‘M14’ solely for Apple and its 16th-gen devices. However, in 2023 Samsung will reportedly build four displays for the iPhone 15 models with assistance from LG display for the two Pro models.

The Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 are expected to launch in August, the iPhone 15 models in September, and the Pixel Fold could release sometime this Spring.

Samsung looking to visually improve its watches with the upcoming Galaxy Watch 6

The Samsung Galaxy Watch series is notorious for both its beauty and quality, but why stop improving?

There’s speculation that the upcoming Galaxy Watch 6 will see some serious visual improvements, including a larger display and slimmer bezels.

According to the well-known Samsung leaker Ice Universe, Samsung is rumoured to increase the Galaxy Watch 6’s dial to 1.47 inches while improving its resolution.

The South Korean tech giant is known for following trends towards increasing screen sizes, more notably with its phone line. Both the Galaxy S8 and S8+ did something similar to what Samsung is now looking to do with its watches – size up and slim down.

Samsung looks to be considering taking a page out of Apple’s playbook, with the Apple Watch Series 7 line shrinking its bezels by 40 percent. They also increased the watch’s display size by 20 percent, setting the bar high for the ideal smartwatch appearance.

Some are having mixed reviews about the alleged decision to focus on visual improvements, with reports of a larger screen with higher resolution potentially affecting the Galaxy Watch 6’s battery life.

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 is expected to be officially revealed this coming August. In the meantime, Ice Universe provided a comparison showing what the difference in bezel size might look like.

The tweet has since been deleted.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 reportedly thinner, lighter than previous models

Reports from South Korean publisher ETNews suggest that the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 5 could see Samsung perfect its hardware and hinge system.

It’s being teased that the 5th-gen version will be lighter and thinner than previous models and feature a hinge that leaves zero gaps between the phone’s displays.

The report states that the change would come from a teardrop-shaped hinge rather than the traditional U shape. This would make the Galaxy Z Fold 5 thinner and allow the phone to be folded completely flat.

Allegedly, the Z Fold 5 could weigh 13g less than the Z Fold 4, and measure 13.4mm when folded, compared to 14.2mm of the Z Fold 4.

The only downside of the report claims that the thinner design of the Z Fold 5 would not leave enough room for the Samsung S Pen. This would mean that the phone would not come with a stylus slot.

Although there have been no official reports, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is predicted to be officially revealed in August of this year alongside the Z Flip 5.

Samsung S23, S22 April security patch expected to come out on April 12

Canadian Samsung users will have to wait a bit to get the latest Samsung security update. Both the S23 series and S22 series will receive the April security update on April 12th, according to the Rogers OS Upgrade Schedule.

According to SamMobile, the S23 series’ update will come with various camera performance and behaviour improvements. The publication indicates that the devices will get an update to improve their autofocus, faster Gallery operations while deleting images that were just clicked, improved sharpness in video capture and improvements to the ultrawide camera in low-light conditions.

The update should also fix a bug that caused a green line to appear in some images. The handsets will also have improved video stabilization in full HD 60fps and low-light conditions.

Further, the update fixes image quality issues when Night Mode is off.

Alongside these patches, the update will include fixes for vulnerabilities similar to other Android security updates. Google hasn’t revealed the monthly security update yet, so we’re waiting to see what vulnerabilities have been fixed with this patch.

Even if you’re not with Rogers, expect the security patch to arrive around that date.

New alleged Samsung render reveals larger screen for the Galaxy Z Flip 5

With Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip and Fold line remaining stagnant design-wise for the past few years, it’s safe to say that the Flip 5 is due for a cosmetic upgrade.

One improvement Samsung is looking to capitalize on is the screen size, with the Galaxy Z Flip 5 planning to make the cover display bigger to improve both functionality and aesthetic (see below).

A new render created by SamMobile based on leaked information shows that this change could be a substantial upgrade for the product line.

The Z Flip 5 is reported to expand the display size to somewhere between 3 to 4-inches, with previous rumours narrowing the expected size down to 3.4-inches.

This is a considerable improvement to Samsung’s previous entry, the Galaxy Z Flip 4. Released in August of last year in Canada, the Z Flip 4 featured a measly 1.34-inch cover screen.

Although adequate for checking notifications or incoming calls, the increased screen size slated for the Z Flip 5 provides more space for users to conduct tasks that require more than a brief glance.

The new render shows that a potential design would see the outer display host a square aspect ratio and cover nearly all of the outer shell of the phone.

A larger external display opens up lots of opportunities for Samsung when it comes to how the company wants to incorporate its One UI user interface on the new device. Options such as running apps directly from the cover screen could become a real possibility if Samsung chooses to do so.

This, when paired with rumours of an upgraded folding screen and increased durability, makes the Galaxy Z Flip 5 a product to keep an eye on as developments continue.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is predicted to be officially revealed in August of this year alongside the Z Fold 5.

Samsung’s new Try Galaxy lets users take a look at One UI 5.1

In the past, Samsung has let non-Samsung users try out its user interface, and now it’s back at it.

Samsung’s new “Try Galaxy” demo tool lets users try out the Galaxy S23, Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Fold 4 software from their devices — including iPhones.

You’ll need to head to the ‘Try Galaxy’ website, and iPhone owners will get a prompt to install a web app by adding the site to their home screen. The app will let users get a taste of One UI 5.1, Samsung’s Android 13 skin.

Previously, Samsung launched ‘iTest,’ an interactive website letting iPhone users test the One UI experience. However, iTest has been replaced by ‘Try Galaxy.’

You can try out the Google core apps like Messages, and demo experience of Samsung Health, Smart Switch and more.

You can try out ‘TryGalaxy,’ here.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 rumoured to offer less battery than predecessor

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 6 series will reportedly be available in four models this year, adding another version to last year’s Galaxy Watch 5 lineup. SamMobile reports that the Chinese regulatory board has published the listings for the upcoming Galaxy Watch 6 series.

  • The listing includes model and battery sizes:
  • Galaxy Watch 6 40mm: 300mAh
  • Galaxy Watch 6 Classic 42mm: 300mAh
  • Galaxy Watch 6 44mm: 425mAh
  • Galaxy Watch 6 Classic 46mm: 425mAh

The ‘Classic’ model will reportedly bring back the rotating bezel and is slightly larger than the standard smartwatch.

Oddly this is a downgrade from the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, which featured a 590mAh battery. Though out of the ordinary, we have seen Samsung lower the megapixels of some of its smartphone cameras in the past.

Samsung will likely reveal its Galaxy Watch 6 series this coming August.
