Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 is a great smartphone and a pretty significant leap over the Galaxy Z Fold 2, especially compared to its predecessor’s plastic-like display. However, it looks like the South Korean tech giant has plans to kick things up a notch with the Galaxy Z Fold 4.

According to information from the blog Naver, the South Korean company will include an improved Ultra-Thin Glass on the Z Fold 4. This upgraded UTG is reportedly stronger and more durable. The new display technology will also offer an improved S Pen experience.

Samsung Galaxy A33 images and specs leak online

A leaked image of Samsung’s Galaxy A33 has surfaced online. The world-renowned leaker Evan Blass has posted renders of the A-series smartphone. While Blass posted the images, the website Appauls has leaked its specs.

The rumour indicates that the phone features a 6.4-inch 90Hz refresh rate OLED display with a 5,000mAh battery and four rear cameras. The handset will reportedly cost €379 in Europe, which in Canadian dollars equals about $530 — unfortunately, there’s usually a markup when these devices reach Canada.

The smartphone will also be powered by an Exynos 1280 processor, which will also be used in the A53.

Camera-wise, the handset will sport a 48-megapixel primary shooter, an 8-megapixel ultrawide camera with a 120-degree field of view, a macro lens as well as a depth lens. On the front, the smartphone is expected to sport a 13-megapixel selfie camera.

The A33 will run One UI 4.1 based on Android 12, come with Dolby Atmos, IP67 water resistance, and 25W charging.

Lastly, the A33 will sport an under-display fingerprint scanner, face recognition and more. The phone will come in black, blue, peach and white.

We’ll likely see these devices, the A53 and the A73 at Samsung’s event on March 17th.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 will reportedly sport a bigger battery

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 is the perfect smartwatch for people firmly planted in Samsung’s ecosystem of devices. However, during my time with the wearable, I found that its battery life isn’t very impressive.

Its rumoured successor, the Galaxy Watch 5, will reportedly feature better battery life. Certification documentation first spotted by SamMobile indicates that the Galaxy Watch 5 will sport a battery of 276mAh. In comparison, the Galaxy Watch 4 ships with a 247mAh battery.

With a larger battery in the smaller variant, it’s also likely the Galaxy Watch 5 will feature a bigger battery as well.

Further, the Galaxy Watch 5 might also include a temperature sensor. According to SamMobile, the Galaxy Watch 5 will launch in the third quarter of the year, likely around August or September.

The images showcase the A53 5G in a rose gold finish and show off the matte back panel and the rectangular quad-camera bump. Rumours indicate the A53 sports a 108-megapixel primary shooter with 4K@60fps video recording and 8K recording.

The A53 will likely be unveiled on March 17th.

Considering last year Samsung unveiled the Galaxy A52 in Canada, so it’s likely we’ll see that smartphone make its way here as well.

SaskTel expands its 5G network to Saskatoon

SaskTel is rolling out its 5G network in Saskatoon for the first time.

The Saskatchewan-based telecom company says it has also given 5G access to 15 towers in Regina, including towers located in the downtown business district.

The company first announced the launch of its 5G services in parts of Regina in December. The company says its network will be further expanded to cover the majority of Regina and Saskatoon by year’s end.

SaskTel’s 5G network is powered by Samsung and delivers speeds up to 1.2Gbps. Once the network is fully deployed, there will be increased capacity and “ultra-low latency” allowing new uses of wireless technology for next-generation innovations.

“Today’s announcement is an important step forward as we strive to bring 5G service to our customers throughout the province,” Doug Burnett, SaskTel’s president and CEO, said in a statement.

“Combining unparalleled wireless data speeds with incredible network capacity and near real-time connections, our 5G network raises the standard for connectivity and paves the way for exciting technological innovations that will transform the way we connect to the world around us.”

To access the network, customers have to be within an area SaskTel’S 5G network covers, have a capable device, and use a compatible 5G wireless plan.

Samsung starts rolling out promised fix for GOS app throttling

Samsung started rolling out its promised fix for the ongoing performance throttling issue plaguing its flagship Galaxy S devices.

XDA Developers spotted reports from Galaxy S22 series users in South Korea who received an update that adds a “Game Performance Management Mode” to the Game Booster app. That should allow users to override the Game Optimizing Service (GOS) performance throttling and eek more performance out of their handsets (as long as they’re willing to put up with some extra heat and reduced battery life).

At the time of publication, Samsung hadn’t provided a timeline of when the update would arrive in other regions.

It also remains unclear if the update fully addresses the problem.

Users accused Samsung of throttling the performance of some 10,000 apps with GOS, including games, social media apps, and more. In a recently published FAQ page, Samsung said GOS didn’t impact anything beyond games.

Samsung has been under fire for its implementation of GOS, particularly because the performance throttling didn’t apply to benchmarking apps. Some felt that by not applying throttling to benchmarking apps, results weren’t an accurate portrayal of real-world performance. The debacle resulted in GeekBench removing results for Galaxy S flagships dating back to the S10 line over “benchmark manipulation.”

Hopefully, the update from Samsung sufficiently corrects the problem. If not, the GOS debacle could continue to tarnish the company’s reputation going forward.

Samsung FAQ page addresses concerns about app throttling with GOS

Samsung published a frequently asked questions (FAQ) page on its South Korean website addressing some of the concerns around its Game Optimizing Service (GOS), which was at the heart of recent controversy around the company.

For those who haven’t followed the GOS debacle, the short version is that Samsung’s optimization software throttled performance across thousands of apps (one list put the total at 10,000). Following the outcry, Samsung said it would issue an update that allowed customers to disable GOS on their Galaxy smartphones.

The GOS issue impacted Galaxy S series smartphones dating back to the S10 line and led to Geekbench delisting performance scores for those devices for “benchmark manipulation.” The debacle has even sparked a preliminary investigation from South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission into Samsung’s Galaxy S22 advertising.

Fast forward to now, and the new FAQ posted by Samsung seeks to explain away some of the (admittedly well-earned) ire against the company.

Spotted by Android Authority and machine translated from Korean, the FAQ reiterates the incoming software update and clarifies it will add a performance priority toggle. Samsung says that enabling the toggle will bring a performance boost of “approximately 10 frames” based on one game.

Interestingly, Samsung also claims in the FAQ that the list of 10,000 apps supposedly throttled by GOS was actually for determining whether an installed app was a game or not. Specifically, Samsung claims GOS “does not work with regular apps other than games.”

The FAQ page also addressed the issue of GOS not impacting performance for benchmarking apps. In short, Samsung says that benchmark tools aren’t games, and therefore GOS doesn’t apply — not a great line of reasoning overall.

Finally, and perhaps one of the few positive revelations in the FAQ, is Samsung’s commitment to offering free repairs to phones even if users turn off GOS (assuming the phone is still under warranty, of course). That should alleviate any concerns about turning off GOS.

Those interested can check out the full FAQ here.
