Samsung, Telus announce deployment of new mission critical network tech

Samsung and Telus announced the successful deployment of “Canada’s first next-generation Mission Critical Push-to-X (MCPTX) services.”

According to a press release from Samsung, the MCPTX deployment on Telus’ network will help equip Canada’s first responders with ” the information and data they need to more accurately assess emergency situations.” It should also help improve responsiveness and operational efficiency.

Samsung shared several examples of how MCPTX will enhance communication in public safety scenarios. For first responders, Samsung says MCPTX tech will help share knowledge and expertise from first responders in different locations or across different agencies. That can include things like communicating in real-time to quickly resolve a public emergency or quickly sharing information like video or maps to first responders.

Another example relates to cellular usage — MCPTX enables priority access for first responders, helpful during catastrophic events where cell usage tends to spike significantly.

Samsung also shared the idea of a connected ambulance that could allow paramedics to share critical information and connect with emergency room doctors to start treatment remotely.

Finally, Samsung suggested that MCPTX could interface with traffic control by disseminating emergency vehicle route maps to intersections, allowing for “green lights” all along the route.

Telus says its MCPTX service will be available with priority access to commercial users on Telus’ network. Moreover, the carrier is actively trialling the service with select customers and will offer wider commercial availability later in 2022.

Those interested can learn more about Samsung’s network solutions here and about Telus’ efforts to support first responders here.

Samsung reportedly looking into service that’s throttling apps on its phones

Samsung is investigating an issue with its ‘Game Optimizing Service’ that could be responsible for limiting the performance of as many as 10,000 apps. Thankfully, the problem may not be widespread.

Android Authority detailed reports from Twitter user ‘GaryeonHan‘ and other people from South Korea who created a list of 10,000 apps that are apparently subjected to “performance limits” from the Game Optimizing Service (GOS). The list isn’t limited to games — it includes tons of prominent apps, like Instagram, Microsoft’s Office apps, Netflix, Google Keep, TikTok, and more. GOS even restricts some of Samsung’s apps, including Samsung Cloud, Pay, Pass, and the dialer app.

Moreover, GOS doesn’t include benchmark apps. Interestingly, Android Authority highlighted a video from Korean YouTuber who tweaked the 3DMark benchmark app to appear as the game Genshin Impact — which does appear on the list. The tweaked 3DMark had its performance limited, resulting in a lower score and reduced framerate.

Screenshot comparing 3DMark performance between normal and ‘tweaked’ app to force GOS | Credit: Android Authority

This all looks pretty bad, but there are a few things to know before you start worrying about your fancy new S22 Ultra not performing as well as it should. First, Samsung is looking into this, at least according to information circulating on Korean blog platform Naver. Hopefully, this will lead to a resolution for those dealing with performance issues.

The other thing to keep in mind is the problem may not impact certain phone models. Android Authority reports that the GOS app isn’t installed on its Galaxy S22 series devices. The app appears on the Galaxy Store, but can’t be installed. The same applies to the S20 FE and S10e. The same seems to be true in Canada — we couldn’t find GOS on the Galaxy Store at all on an S22 Ultra.

Regardless, it’s frustrating when manufacturers limit performance on devices. Several Android manufacturers have gotten a bad rap for restricting background apps to conserve battery life. Samsung is already among the worst offenders for that (at least according to dontkillmyapp.com) and this GOS debacle won’t help that.

Apple increased its 2021 sales by 20 percent despite supply chain issues: analysis

Supply chain issues impacted every market worldwide, and the smartphone market was no different.

A new analysis from Gartner says the market felt the pinch in sales during the second half of 2021; global sales declined by 1.7 percent.

Despite this, Apple maintained its position as selling the most units in the fourth quarter of 2021 among the top five smartphone vendors in the world.

Apple sold nearly 83 million phones, representing almost 22 percent of the market. The company saw a 3.8 percent increase in sales compared to Q4 2020. The analysis notes 5G upgrades drove the sales.

Worldwide smartphone sales Q4 2021. Source: Gartner (March 2022)

Samsung represented the second-highest sales in the quarter, with nearly 69 million units sold. The company increased its smartphone sales by 11 percent year-over-year.

When looking at the results for the entire year, Apple ranks second, selling over 239 million smartphones, increasing its yearly sales by almost 20 percent. Samsung ranks first with more than 272 million sales. Annual sales increased by 7.6 percent. These figures helped global smartphone sales increase by six percent.

Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo round out the top five smartphone manufacturers. Looking at fourth-quarter results, Xiaomi maintained its position in third place. But Oppo and Vivo experienced significant declines.

While all three companies expanded their networks in the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Europe, Apple’s strong sales in China during the quarter overshadowed the demand for phones from the three Chinese manufacturers.

Samsung officially kills off its popular Galaxy Note line

I feel like we’ve been reporting this story for years at this point, but it’s finally official — Samsung has officially ended the use of ‘Galaxy Note’ branding.

In a statement to reporters at Mobile World Congress 2022 (MWC) (via Dailian), Samsung smartphone head Roh Taeo-moon said that the “Galaxy Note will come out as Ultra” going forward, referencing the recently released Galaxy S22 Ultra.

In several ways, the S22 Ultra is just a Note device with another name. It features a squared-off design than the S22 and S22+, and unlike last year’s S21 Ultra, it also includes a storage enclosure for its S Pen stylus. The last official Note device was 2020’s Galaxy Note 20 Ultra.

With Samsung’s attention shifting away from slab-styled smartphones to the foldable space with its innovative ‘Z’ line, it makes sense for the South Korean tech giant to consolidate its branding efforts.

Over the years, the Note line built a substantial fan base of smartphone users who prefer larger devices and appreciated the precision a stylus offers. Though I’ve always liked the Note series — I once called the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7 my favourite smartphone ever — I’ve never found its S Pen very useful.

Still, those who were worried Samsung might kill off the stylus following the release of the S22 Ultra no longer have a cause for concern as it looks like the S Pen is sticking around in its high-end ‘S’ series flagship device for the foreseeable future.

Samsung unveils Galaxy Book2 Pro, Pro 360 with 12th Gen Intel chips and Arc

Samsung has unveiled its latest Windows laptops, the Galaxy Book2 Pro and Book 2 Pro 360, at MWC. The new laptops build on last year’s Galaxy Book Pro with new features, improved hardware, Windows 11 and more.

There’s plenty to unpack with the Book 2 Pro and Pro 360, but before we dig into specs, there are some highlight features worth making note of. Chief among them is Samsung’s ‘Multi Control,’ which allows Galaxy Book users to control their Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 with the Galaxy Book’s keyboard and mouse.

If that seems familiar, it’s probably because it’s practically identical to Apple’s ‘Universal Control’ feature. That said, Apple’s Universal Control hasn’t actually launched yet — it’s still in beta and, at this rate, it seems like Samsung might actually beat it to the punch.

Samsung also touted the security features of its new laptops. Another highlight was the 87° 1080p webcam with ‘Auto Framing’ that tracks subjects to keep them in frame, like Apple’s Center Stage. Bixby will also make its way onto the Book 2 Pro and Pro 360 so you can continue to not use it on your laptop as well as your smartphone now.

Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Pro in Silver and Graphite.

As for specs, the Book 2 Pro and Pro 360 both seem loaded. Both laptops sport 12th Gen Intel Core i5 or i7 chips with Intel Evo certification, up to 32GB of RAM, and up to 1TB of storage. All the laptops use Intel’s Xe integrated graphics, although the 15.6-inch Book 2 Pro will also have access to Intel Arc graphics.

On that note, both laptops some in 13.3- and 15.6-inch options with SuperAMOLED FHD (1920×1080 pixel) screens, with the Pro 360 offering a 360° hinge and S-Pen support (thankfully, one comes in the box). The laptops support Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.1, fingerprint authentication and more. The 15.6-inch Book 2 Pro also has 5G available.

Galaxy Book 2 Pro in ‘tent mode’

Overall, these new Galaxy Books look impressive, although it, unfortunately, looks like they’ll come loaded with Samsung software like last year’s Galaxy Book. For anyone deeply committed to the Samsung ecosystem, that may be welcome, but for everyone else, it’s more bloat to uninstall from your new PC.

Samsung says the Galaxy Book 2 Pro and Pro 360 will be available in ‘Silver,’ ‘Graphite,’ and ‘Burgundy’ (only for the Pro 360) and will launch in April.

Luxury brand launches $7,000 gold plated Galaxy S22 Ultra

Outlandish Russian brand, Caviar, has customized Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series by adding a little more luxury to the line.

Caviar has launched six different collections of the Galaxy S22 series. The ‘Ocelot,’ is the most expensive and starts at $6,600 USD (about $8,398 CAD) for the 128GB Galaxy S22. Pricing goes all the way up to $7,830 USD ($9,963 CAD) for the Ultra model with 512GB of storage.

Caviar says that the handsets are double electroplated with 24K gold and feature a black PVD-titanium material on the back with golden laser engraving.

While the Ocelot collection starts at the most expensive pricing, the Great Gatsby collection features even more expensive luxury materials on the back. This one also sports 3D geometric patterns and ranges from $6,450 to $7,680 USD ($10,001 CAD).

Lastly, there’s the Bird Of Prey lineup, which includes the 24K gold double electroplated back as well as some crocodile skin. These handsets start at $6,370 USD ($8,105 CAD) and go up to $7,600 ($9,671 CAD).

Samsung sent me my Galaxy S22 Ultra pre-order early

On February 9th, the day Samsung revealed the S22 series, MobileSyrup saw a few reports from other publications that the tech giant’s pre-order website was experiencing issues. So I decided to pre-order the $1,800 phone to see if the site would work for me. It couldn’t be that hard to return over the two weeks before the phone’s launch on February 25th, could it?

A few days after the Samsung event, I attempted to cancel my pre-order through Samsung’s online chat portal. After opening it up, I was greeted with a message that said someone would help me in around two and half hours. I accidentally closed the Chrome tab three hours later, so I still don’t know if anyone from Samsung support ever saw that ticket.

A day after that, I spent time on the phone with Samsung support, and a friendly representative told me that he’d requested my cancellation, so I should expect a confirmation email shortly. That email never arrived, and I forgot about this whole adventure until a few days later when I saw my credit card had already been charged for the phone. After a mini heart attack, because I forgot that I bought an $1,800 phone that I didn’t want, I got back on the line with Samsung’s support.

This agent was also friendly. He told me that he could see my first cancellation request and that he was sending another one with an urgent tag attached to it. That was Friday, February 18th, which is still a solid seven days ahead of the phone launch.

Then on Tuesday the 22nd, I received a knock on my door, and a postal worker handed me a package. I didn’t pay that much attention to it since I often have a lot of packages coming in as part of my job. Plus, I was also expecting a Pixel 6 to arrive that day. When I opened the box, my heart sank.

Inside was the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s slim box — a full four days ahead of its official release on the 25th. So I did what any tech reviewer would do and unboxed it.

I also took a few demo photos, so you can check them out below if you’re interested in those. Overall the camera is far more solid than I expected. That said, none of the pictures blew me away, but after comparing them to my iPhone 13 Pro’s shots, I went back and turned off the rich contrast filter on Apple’s smartphone since it made the photos look more processed and over-sharpened compared to Samsung’s processing.

Stay tuned for Dean Daley’s full review of the Galaxy S22 Ultra it the coming days for more robust camera impressions.
