Samsung sent me my Galaxy S22 Ultra pre-order early

On February 9th, the day Samsung revealed the S22 series, MobileSyrup saw a few reports from other publications that the tech giant’s pre-order website was experiencing issues. So I decided to pre-order the $1,800 phone to see if the site would work for me. It couldn’t be that hard to return over the two weeks before the phone’s launch on February 25th, could it?

A few days after the Samsung event, I attempted to cancel my pre-order through Samsung’s online chat portal. After opening it up, I was greeted with a message that said someone would help me in around two and half hours. I accidentally closed the Chrome tab three hours later, so I still don’t know if anyone from Samsung support ever saw that ticket.

A day after that, I spent time on the phone with Samsung support, and a friendly representative told me that he’d requested my cancellation, so I should expect a confirmation email shortly. That email never arrived, and I forgot about this whole adventure until a few days later when I saw my credit card had already been charged for the phone. After a mini heart attack, because I forgot that I bought an $1,800 phone that I didn’t want, I got back on the line with Samsung’s support.

This agent was also friendly. He told me that he could see my first cancellation request and that he was sending another one with an urgent tag attached to it. That was Friday, February 18th, which is still a solid seven days ahead of the phone launch.

Then on Tuesday the 22nd, I received a knock on my door, and a postal worker handed me a package. I didn’t pay that much attention to it since I often have a lot of packages coming in as part of my job. Plus, I was also expecting a Pixel 6 to arrive that day. When I opened the box, my heart sank.

Inside was the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s slim box — a full four days ahead of its official release on the 25th. So I did what any tech reviewer would do and unboxed it.

I also took a few demo photos, so you can check them out below if you’re interested in those. Overall the camera is far more solid than I expected. That said, none of the pictures blew me away, but after comparing them to my iPhone 13 Pro’s shots, I went back and turned off the rich contrast filter on Apple’s smartphone since it made the photos look more processed and over-sharpened compared to Samsung’s processing.

Stay tuned for Dean Daley’s full review of the Galaxy S22 Ultra it the coming days for more robust camera impressions.

Samsung flagships to lose another feature to iPhone

In recent years Samsung has slowly been removed features from their Galaxy hardware, making them more in line with the competition. First, it was the headphone jack, the micro-SD slot, and they could be losing another very soon.

According to a new report, Apple’s next-generation iPhone will feature 8GB of RAM. This is a technology that Samsung has in its current-gen flagship Galaxy S22 line. The Korean tech giant seems to be losing yet another exclusive feature to the competition in Apple.

The iPhone is already notably faster than the Samsung Galaxy line, a lead that will grow even larger with the boost in performance 8GB of RAM will bring.

Also, Apple already has the lead over Samsung on the memory front with phones that go up to 1TB in storage.

This doesn’t mark the end of Samsung’s share in the cellular market. However, it could spell an even tighter race amongst the giants in smartphones.

It will be interesting to see if Samsung ups their storage capacity or break new ground on the RAM front as a response to this new iPhone development.

What do you use your smartphone’s stylus for?

I’m currently reviewing Samsung’s very Note-like Galaxy S22 Ultra, which features a 6.8-inch display, 12GB of RAM and a built-in S-Pen storage slot.

The S-Pen works well and offers various features, including ‘Air Gestures’ for controlling media and taking pictures, ‘AR Doodle’ that allows you to draw using the smartphone’s cameras to create an AR effect, and ‘S Pen to Text’ that translates your scribbles into text. If you’re into smartphone styluses, you’ll be happy to hear that these features work fluidly with the Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Still, even with all of this functionality, I don’t find myself using the S Pen very often.

Smartphone manufacturers like Samsung and Motorola (and at one point LG) continue to launch smartphones with styluses, but I’ve never really understood why some people want a smartphone with a stylus.

With this in mind, our question this week is: what do you use your smartphone’s stylus for?

It’s unclear what Samsung will reveal at its MWC 2022 keynote

Samsung has revealed it will hold a press event on February 27th, the day before Mobile World Congress (MWC) is set to start (Feb. 28th – March 3rd).

While we usually have a good idea of what the South Korean tech giant plans to reveal at its keynotes, things are more up in the air this time and it’s unclear what the company will unveil during the event taking place in Barcelona, Spain.

Samsung already released its Galaxy S22 series and Tab S8 tablets earlier this month, so it’s unlikely we’ll see any new devices at the event. That said, there’s a chance the successor to the Galaxy Watch 4 and a new version of the Galaxy Book Pro could appear. There’s also a chance Samsung may use the event to show off some of the more out-there foldable prototypes the company has teased in the past.

Though MWC 2022 and Samsung’s event are happening in-person in Barcelona, you can also watch a livestream of the presentation on Samsung’s YouTube channel and website at 1pm ET/10am PT.

MobileSyrup will have more on Samsung’s MWC 2022 keynote in the coming days.

Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22+ refresh rate only goes as low as 48Hz

The Samsung Galaxy S22’s and S22+’s display isn’t as adaptive as many initially assumed.

Samsung previously told MobileSyrup that both the S22 and S22+ feature an adaptive display refresh rate as high as 120Hz and as low as 10Hz. However, it looks like Samsung has changed its mind.

Samsung has changed the smartphones’ official spec sheets from 10Hz- 120Hz to 48Hz-120Hz, as first spotted by Display Supply Chain Consultant’s CEO, Ross Young.

Samsung has also released a statement to Android Police revealing information about the unreleased smartphones’ display refresh rates:

“The display refresh rate was originally listed between 10 and 120Hz (10 to 120 frames per second), and we later opted to update how we communicate this specification in order to be in line with the more widely-recognized industry standard. Consumers can be assured there has been no change of hardware specifications, and both devices support up to 120Hz for super smooth scrolling.”

What this means is that though S22/S22+’s software is capable of telling the display to refresh as low as 10 times per second (10Hz), the screen will still only refresh at 48Hz.

You can learn more about the Galaxy S22 and S22+ in MobileSyrup staff reporter Jon Lamont’s upcoming review, but until it hits the site, check out our Galaxy S22 series announcement post.

Samsung Expert RAW camera app coming to more phones

It’s come to light that Samsung will release its ‘Expert RAW’ camera app to even more flagship Samsung phones on February 25th.

This camera extension currently allows the S21 Ultra and S22 Ultra cameras to utilize professional features across all the lenses and sensors. However, after the February 25th update, it’s expected to work with the Galaxy Z Flip 3, Z Fold 3, Note 20 Ultra at the very least.

The report says that Samsung will release a more official list of phones that the app will work with by the 25th. Android Central doesn’t expect the app to come to the new Galaxy S22 or S22+.

The Expert RAW app is currently in beta, but it’s supposed to hit the stable release on the 25th.

What is Expert RAW?

This is a separate camera app that sits alongside the Samsung camera app. It allows users with top-end mobile camera systems to control ISO, shutter speed, EV comp, manual focus, white balance and more.

The app also allows some cameras with compatible sensors to capture 16-bit RAW DNG images which should allow for very dynamic colours.

You can read more about the app by checking it out on Samsung’s Galaxy Store, or you can read more about the company’s flagship camera prowess here.
