How to watch Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event

Samsung is ready to reveal its latest S series flagship devices at its Unpacked event on February 9th at 10am ET/7am PT.

The event comes almost four months after Samsung held its ‘Unpacked 2‘ stream to showcase the Galaxy Z Flip 3 Bespoke Edition and One UI 4.

From what we know so far, Samsung is expected to unveil its latest S Series flagship devices, which include the S22, s22+ and S22 Ultra, along with the Tab S8 series, which includes the Tab S8, Tab S8+ and the Tab S8 Ultra.

Samsung dropped the Galaxy Note line last year, and it’s unlikely we’ll see it back this year. Consequently, Samsung’s top-tier flagship, the Galaxy S22 Ultra, is likely to include a Note-like design, an S-Pen, and top-of-the line specifications, while the other S22 and S22+ are expected to sport a design similar to its predecessors.

The company can also come out with a limited-edition Z Fold 3 or Z Flip 3, or updates for its latest Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic, though we haven’t heard of any rumours surrounding those products.

Whatever might be the case, you can follow along with MobileSyrup’s coverage of the event on our homepage as well as on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram or check the showcase out for yourself on Samsung’s YouTube page, Samsung’s website or from the stream embedded below at 10am ET/7am PT.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 update brings new health-focused features

Samsung has announced new features coming to the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic.

The update includes new fitness tricks.

The first is a body composition update that gives users more insight into their health progress. Galaxy Watch 4 users will get a free 30-day trial to Centr.

Samsung will also launch a new sleep coaching program that helps users develop new sleep habits. The update will track sleep patterns over seven days and complete two related sleep surveys. Following that it will guide users through a four to five-week coaching program with missions, checklists, sleep-related articles, meditation guidance and regular reports to see if sleep quality is improved.

More watch faces are coming as well including burgundy and cream sleep bands, new fabric bands and link bracelets.

As another upcoming update, users will be able to stream music over Wi-Fi or LTE via the YouTube Music app on their Galaxy Watch 4.

This update and more will come out during the February 9th unpacked event. We’ve reached out to Samsung Canada to confirm Canadian availability.

What smartphone tech are you excited for in 2022?

In 2022, we’re expected to see a variety of smartphones from notable players in the industry like Samsung, Apple, Google and more. For example, next week Samsung will almost certainly show off its anticipated Galaxy S22 series.

In 2021, several pretty cool smartphones appeared on the scene. I’m a big fan of foldables, so getting my hands on devices like the Z Fold 3 and the Z Flip 3 was pretty exciting. I was also thrilled by the Oppo Find N’s unique form factor that offered a more traditional aspect ratio on its cover display.

This year, Google is expected to release a Pixel-branded foldable smartphone, we’ll see the iPhone 14 series, the aforementioned S22 line and maybe even a few surprises from Samsung based on the South Korean tech giant’s Flex G and Flex S foldable form factors (seen below).

With all of this in mind, what smartphone technology are you excited to see this year? Let us know in the comments below.

Apple’s iPad sales fell in Q4 but still saw growth in yearly sales

Shipments of Apple’s iPad fell in Q4 of 2021, according to a new report from the International Data Corporation (IDC), falling in line with the company’s recently released quality results.

The IDC report shows Apple shipped 17.5 million units in Q4 2021, an 8.6 percent decrease compared to Q4 2020.

Apple’s Q1 2022 earnings show sales grew by 11 percent to hit $123.9 billion USD (roughly $157 billion CAD), but the iPad was not a helping factor.

The report shows iPad sales resulted in $7.25 billion (roughly $9.2 billion CAD) worth of revenue, a 14 percent downturn year-over-year.

The iPhone 13 contributed to a revenue increase of 9.2 percent, its accessories division contributed to a rise of 13 percent, and its Mac division contributed to a 24 percent increase in sales.

Apple wasn’t alone in experiencing the decline. According to the IDC, 46 million tablets shipped in Q4 2021, representing the second decline since the onset of the pandemic in 2020.

Despite the decline, the tech giant still led the pack in sales. Apple was far ahead with its 17.5 million unit shipment, compared to Samsung, which trailed behind at second. The company shipped 7.3 million units, a 21.6 year-over-year decline.

Lenovo saw a 25.4 percent decrease, and Chromebooks declined by nearly 64 percent.

Tablets from Amazon saw an increase with 1.3 percent growth. But with only 3.6 million units shipped, it was far behind Apple, Samsung and Lenovo.

Disappointing quarter aside, the yearly growth numbers were much more substantial, with an overall increase of 3.2 percent among the top five companies, the highest level seen since 2016.

Apple saw an 8.4 percent growth in shipments in 2021 compared to 2020, with 57.8 million units shipped compared to 53.3.

Senior research analyst Anuroopa Natarah says the Q4 decline is because many areas have moved past their peak demand. However, shipments will stay above pre-pandemic levels because of the need to work remotely, virtual learning, and media consumption.

Samsung Galaxy S22, S22+ rumoured to be delayed until March 11

Samsung might be going through another supply chain issue, according to a well-known leaker with a mixed track record, Jon Prosser.

According to Prosser, the Galaxy S22 and S22+ won’t hit stores until March 11th, with the Galaxy S22 Ultra being the only device landing in stores on February 25th.

Prosser indicates that supply chain issues are the cause of the setbacks. This isn’t the first time that supply chain issues have caused concerns for Samsung.

Previous rumours indicate that the Galaxy S21 FE was poised to launch in August, but due to supply chain issues, the device didn’t release until January.

Samsung will officially unveil the Galaxy S22 series on February 9th.

Intel, Samsung hype the future of touchless food ordering coming to Quebec

Intel and Samsung are really, really excited about a new touchless interactive kiosk headed to select St-Hubert locations in Montreal and Laval, Quebec.

Both companies reached out to MobileSyrup about the ‘AIRxTOUCH KIOSK Series 3,’ a fancy retail kiosk from Luxembourg-based iNUI Studio. In short, the kiosk leverages “air touch” technology to allow customers to interact with it without actually touching the display. It actually sounds kinda neat, although it remains to be seen how well it works in practice.

Specifically, the Air Touch tech uses proprietary image processing algorithms to allow “mid-air interaction (5 cm from the screen)” with support for common interactions like clicking, double-clicking, drag and drop, slide, zoom, and more.

As for where Samsung and Intel come in, both companies supply core pieces of the AIRxTOUCH kiosk solution — it uses a Samsung QMR Series 55-inch display, while the kiosk runs on Intel’s NUC 11 Pro Kit.

According to a press release provided by Intel, “Canada and the St-Hubert chain were chosen as one of the first global locations for this food ordering technology with additional implementations expected in other food chains across North America.”

Initially, I thought the whole AIRxTOUCH kiosk was ridiculous (thanks in part to this overly dramatic marketing video) but after thinking about it a bit, I may actually be on board with this thing.

Assuming it works well, a touchless ordering kiosk would be great (especially with the pandemic) as it would hopefully reduce the number of people touching a shared surface. Plus, there are other potential applications — these kiosks could work in malls, transportation hubs and other places where a self-serve option is common.

Anyway, if you happen to live in Montreal or Laval and frequently visit St-Hubert, keep an eye out for one of these and give it a try if you see one.

Samsung has finally confirmed the launch date and time for the Galaxy Unpacked event, February 9th at 10am ET/7am PT.

With that, we expect Samsung to unveil the Galaxy S22 series and the Galaxy Tab S8 series going off previous rumour.

In fact, earlier today the well-known Evan Blass has leaked the Galaxy S22 series in a rainbow of colours.

Samsung’s latest S22 series will reportedly release in these four colours

We already know quite a bit about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 lineup through leaks, including the fact that the S22 Ultra will likely feature less RAM than its predecessor.

However, leakers have been relatively quiet about the device’s colours — at least until now. Often-reliable leaker Evan Blass has shared several reported press renders that show the S22 series in its full glory.

Check out the images below:

The Samsung Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus will reportedly be available in the same ‘Black,’ ‘Dark/Olive Green,’ ‘Pink’ and ‘White’ colourways, while the larger S22 Ultra will offer the same shades and a darker pink variant.

From what we know so far, the Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra will feature a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, up to 12GB of RAM, 512GB of storage and work with an S Pen. The other S22 models reportedly lack the S Pen support, sport an S21-like design with three cameras and feature the same Snapdragon 8 gen 1 chipset as the S22 Ultra.

While Samsung hasn’t officially announced a reveal date for the S22 series, previous leaks have indicated that we might get our first look at the device at Samsung’s Unpacked event on February 8th or 9th.
