Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra will likely feature less RAM than its predecessor

Leaked European pricing for Samsung’s still-unannounced Galaxy S22 series courtesy of Roland Quandt (via Android Police), indicates that the S22 Ultra will cost as much as its predecessor despite featuring less RAM.

Quandt says that the S22 will start at 849€ (about $1,219.53), the S22+ will cost 1,049€ (approximately $1,506 CAD) and the S22 ultra will cost 1,249€ (roughly $1,794 CAD). For context, at launch in Canada, the S21 started at $1,129 CAD, the s21+ cost $1,469 CAD and the S21 Ultra cost $1,649 CAD.

Though the S21’s launch pricing is slightly less expensive than the converted Canadian pricing for the rumoured S22 series, the cost will likely be in this range (or at least, within $100 or so).

The interesting thing here is that Quandt’s leaked pricing mentions that the S22 Ultra will feature 8GB RAM instead of 12GB RAM like with the base-level S21 Ultra, but at a very similar price point.

Quandt’s tweet indicates that Samsung will still sell a 12GB RAM variant of the S22 Ultra with 256GB and 512GB of storage at 1,349€ (about $1,936 CAD) and 1,449€ (roughly $2,080 CAD), respectively. Last year, Samsung offered 16GB RAM in its 512GB version of the S21 Ultra, which started at $1,889 CAD.

Rumours indicate Samsung’s Galaxy S22 Ultra will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, up to 12GB of RAM, 512GB of storage and compatibility with its S Pen stylus. The other S22 models reportedly lack the S Pen support, sport an S21-like design with three cameras and feature the same Snapdragon 8 gen 1 chipset as the S22 Ultra.

Samsung is expected to reveal its Galaxy S22 series officially during an upcoming February’ Unpacked’ event.

Samsung teases “noteworthy” Galaxy S series device announcement next month

Samsung’s next Unpacked event will take place in February 2022. The company didn’t share exactly when in February (rumours point to the 8th) but it did tease the reveal of what will likely be called the Galaxy S22 series, including the “most noteworthy S series device.”

The line comes straight from Samsung president Dr. TM Roh’s new blog post. Roh details several innovations from past Samsung phones — including several mentions of Galaxy Note features — before rolling out the tease.

“At Unpacked in February 2022, we’ll introduce you to the most noteworthy S series device we’ve ever created. The next generation of Galaxy S is here, bringing together the greatest experiences of our Samsung Galaxy into one ultimate device,” Roh writes.

He goes on to note a few things about the phone, writing that owners will “own the night” by taking the “best and brightest photos and videos” ever captured with a phone. Moreover, Roh wrote that the upcoming Galaxy S device will offer “power, speed and tools that can’t be found elsewhere” and “cutting edge-innovations” thanks to the “smartest Galaxy experience yet.”

For Note fans, Samsung’s upcoming Unpacked event will certainly be one to watch. Samsung’s Galaxy Note phones had a dedicated fanbase and many were sad to see the line go away last year.

Rumours have long suggested Samsung would eventually turn its Galaxy S Ultra device into a Note replacement. The S21 Ultra came close, offering the best specs available in a Samsung phone and even S Pen support (although you needed a case to actually carry an S Pen instead of storing it in the phone like the Note series). Maybe that will all change in February.

Finally, Samsung will open reservations for the upcoming Galaxy S series and/or its upcoming tablet. Those who reserve will also get a $50 Samsung credit toward other Galaxy products during pre-order. Engadget reports that the reservations will open January 21st at 10am ET, but they already appear to be open for U.S. customers at the time of writing (stay tuned for an update if and when Samsung Canada opens reservations).

Intel purchases first next-gen chip-making tool set to arrive in 2024

Intel announced that it ordered the first of a new generation of chip-making machines from ASML, a Dutch manufacturer of photolithography systems.

The purchase is Intel’s latest move in a larger effort to get back on top of the chip game. Each of the new ASML machines, dubbed ‘Twinscan EXE:5200,’ cost on average $340 million USD (about $425 million CAD) and should arrive in 2024. It’s considered critical to advancing processor progress. One of the main ways chipmakers advance processors is through miniaturization. By shrinking chip circuitry, manufacturers can fit more into processors, enabling them to do more work.

Photolithography, which literally means “writing on stone with light” according to CNET, is core to the process of miniaturizing chip circuitry. Samsung and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) have both surpassed Intel in this regard thanks to the use of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light. The shorter wavelength of EUV allows manufacturers to inscribe finer patterns on silicon wafers.

CNET reports that Intel was late to the EUV game, but the company is now working to correct that. The company expects to start selling its first EUV chips in 2023 with processors based on the ‘Intel 4’ node — the company’s somewhat confusing new name for its 7nm process.

The new Twinscan EXE:5200 machines are scheduled to be delivered in 2024 for Intel operations beginning in 2025. The machine uses an advanced EUV tool with a high numeric aperture (NA) to inscribe even finer patterns on silicon wafers.

In simpler terms, that means we’re still several years out from seeing Intel’s more advanced and hopefully more competitive NA EUV process (likely as part of the Intel 18A process slated for 2025). Intel is only just ramping up EUV with Intel 4, which was originally supposed to launch in 2021 but was infamously delayed (and renamed).

With Samsung and TSMC already using EUV for 5nm and even 4nm (with Samsung’s new Exynos 2200), there’s still a clear gap between the companies. Even though Intel’s first in line for NA EUV technology, it’s still behind on current EUV. And it’s not like either Samsung or TSMC will sit idle and let Intel catch up. The next few years will certainly be interesting in the chip market and I expect competition will heat up as Intel chases the top spot.

Samsung accidentally shares images of the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra

We’ve seen Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra renders in the past, but none come close to the image Samsung mistakenly leaked on its Bixby support page that shows the tab sporting a notch.

The leaked image, first spotted by 91mobiles, shows what seems to be an S21 Ultra using Bixby voice assistant, and in the background sits the large Tab S8 Ultra.

While Samsung has since removed the image from its Bixby support page, according to 9to5Google, the photo is still present in the web page’s source code. It’s worth noting that this is the same company that criticized the notch four months ago — I guess it all comes back full circle.

From what we know so far, the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra features a 14.6-inch 2,960 x 1,848 pixel resolution AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage and S-Pen stylus support. The tablet is reportedly expected to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, two rear cameras (13-megapixel, 6-megapixel ultrawide), Dolby Atmos quad speakers and 5G.

It’s unknown when Samsung will officially reveal the Galaxy Tab S8 series, but it’ll most likely be shown off alongside the company’s Galaxy S22 series, which is rumoured to be unveiled at the company’s ‘Unpacked’ event on February 8th.

Samsung unveils Exynos 2200 chip with Xclipse graphics based on AMD RDNA 2

Samsung announced its latest mobile processor, the Exynos 2200, sporting a new graphics processing unit (GPU) using AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture dubbed ‘Xclipse.’

Samsung has teased plans to include AMD graphics tech in its mobile chips for a while now, and in June 2021 announced that its upcoming Exynos chip would offer ray-tracing capabilities. The Exynos 2200 delivers on that promise with hardware-accelerated ray tracing in Xclipse.

Ray tracing, for those unfamiliar with the tech, attempts to simulate how light physically behaves. In video games, ray tracing can help produce more realistic-looking lighting effects, including light that can bounce off reflective surfaces. However, so far ray tracing has proven to be difficult for GPUs to handle and often brings a significant performance hit compared to other lighting solutions.

Still, it’s impressive to see the technology come to mobile chips. It’ll be interesting to see how well it works in practice. Moreover, Samsung shared this surprisingly weird video touting the capabilities of the Exynos 2200 GPU:

Aside from the benefits of AMD RDNA 2 and ray tracing in Xclipse, the Exynos 2200 chip sports other benefits. Samsung says the chip uses a 4nm extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) process and is one of the first in the mark to integrate Arm’s latest ARMv9 CPU cores. The ARMv9 cores offer a significant improvement over ARMv8 in both performance and security.

Specifically, the octa-core Exynos 2200 sports a tri-cluster structure with a single ARM Cortex-X2 core, three performance and efficiency balanced Cortex-A710 ‘big cores’ and four power-efficient Cortex-A510 ‘little cores.’

Exynos 2200 also support powerful on-device artificial intelligence (AI) thanks to an upgraded neural processing unit (NPU) and both sub-6 and mmWave 5G through an improved modem.

Finally, Samsung touted the chip’s image signal processor (ISP), which has a redesigned architecture that supports resolutions of up to 200 megapixels. When recording video at 30fps, the ISP supports up to 108 megapixels in single camera mode and 64+36 megapixels in dual camera mode. The ISP can connect up to seven individual image sensors and drive four sensors simultaneously for multi-camera set-ups. The ISP also supports up to 4K HDR or 8K recording.

While the Exynos 2200 certainly sounds impressive, Canadians might not get to try it out. Samsung typically launches its flagship phones in Canada with Qualcomm Snapdragon chips instead of its own Exynos (usually, Exynos chips power Samsung devices outside of North America). Of course, we won’t know for certain until devices rocking the Exynos 2200 release — for now, though, it’s probably safe to assume we won’t get those devices in Canada.

Those interested in learning more about the Exynos 2200 can check out all the details on Samsung’s website.

Samsung users find issue with Google Keep’s numbered lists

Some Samsung users are experiencing a strange problem with Google’s Keep app. This problem was initially spotted on a Google forum in late November and was first reported by 9to5Google.

The problem causes users who are adding new items to Google Keep with an auto-numbered list, or when navigating the note, you’ll get additional copies of the number.

Interestingly, the issue seems only to affect users who upgraded to Android 12. The phones that seem to be experiencing the problem include the Galaxy S21, S20 and Note 20. Google Keep is probably one of my most-used apps, and I haven’t experienced the issue on an S21 Ultra, Z Fold 3 or S21 FE.

So far, the only way to fix this is to edit the list from a laptop or with your web app.

Google has acknowledged the issue and says that their Keep team is looking into the problem.

Additionally, it features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, two rear cameras (13-megapixel, 6-megapixel ultrawide), Dolby Atmos quad speakers and 5G.

The other Tab S8 variants offer less-than-stellar specs, however. The Tab S8+ features a 120Hz, 2,800 x 1,752 AMOLED panel with a 12-megapixel front shooter, 8GB of RAM, 256GB of expandable storage and lastly, the smallest S8 tablet sports an 11-inch LCD screen with 120Hz refresh rate and 2,560 x 1,600-pixel resolution.

It’s unclear when Samsung will unveil its Galaxy Tab S8 series, we’ll likely catch our first glimpse of it alongside the company’s Galaxy S22 series.

Get up to $236 in trade-in credit towards Samsung Galaxy S21 FE

If you were thinking about buying Samsung’s new Galaxy S21 Fan Edition (FE) but weren’t thrilled by the admittedly lacklustre carrier offers, maybe Samsung’s own deal will work instead.

As spotted by users over at RedFlagDeals, Samsung is currently offering up to $236 in trade-in credit when you buy the S21 FE. Additionally, customers will get two cases with the purchase — one ‘Navy’ case and one ‘White’ case. Both cases have a regular price of $59.99. The case portion of the offer is only available until February 7th, 2022.

The trade-in deal, as well as a second AirMiles offer, on the other hand, are both available until March 9th. Samsung’s website notes that the $236 trade-in value is “based on trading in a Galaxy S9+ 64GB,” so the actual value you get may differ. Judging by the fine print, however, it seems Samsung applies an extra $150 promotional credit to the trade-in value:

“Receive a trade-in promotional credit of $150, in addition to the trade-in value of the Eligible Trade-in Product, when you:
(i) purchase eligible Galaxy S21 FE 5G device between January 11th, 2022 and March 9th, 2022 (the “Offer Period”), from a participating authorized Canadian retailer or carrier, a Samsung Experience Store in Canada or online at https://www.samsung.com/ca/; and
(ii) complete the trade-in of your eligible smartphone (the “Eligible Trade-In Product”) by March 9th, 2022; and
(iii) ship the Eligible Trade-in Product within 14 calendar days of receiving the waybill.”

Assuming you get the advertised $236 trade-in credit, the Samsung S21 FE price will go from $949.99 to $713.99. Combined with the two free cases, that’s some pretty solid savings overall.

Finally, the Air Miles offer will net customers 200 Air Miles Bonus Miles with purchases of an S21 FE and an extra 100 Air Miles Bonus Miles when they purchase Samsung Care+ on a new S21 FE. Of the listed deals, that’s probably the least exciting unless you plan on getting Care+ and happen to be an Air Miles collector too.

You can check out the Galaxy S21 FE offers on Samsung Canada’s website here.
