Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra spotted in unboxing with camera samples

It looks like Samsung’s S23 Ultra has been unboxed on Twitter. Videos shared by Edward Urbina show off the upcoming smartphone’s ‘Cotton Flower’ colour variant.

It’s unclear how Urbina got his hands on the device early but based on pictures he’s posted, the device looks to match up with leaked renders and rumours.

Urbina has also shared several sample images (seen above) that show off the smartphone’s improved low-light performance and telephoto images. The device is rumoured to feature a 200-megapixel primary shooter, and thanks to its larger sensors, it offers improved low-light performance. However, telephoto-wise, the cameras are the same, so we shouldn’t see anything too different this time around.

The S23 Ultra, alongside the S23 and S23+, will launch on February 1st.

Samsung Display shows off futuristic waterdrop hinge that folds in and out

Samsung has shown off a prototype display revealing a smartphone that can fold 360 degrees. Samsung Display, the division of the company that focuses on screens, showed The Verge a new prototype screen and hinge at CES 2023.

The “Flex In & Out” display can rotate 360 degrees, allowing you to fold it, as you may have already assumed, in and out. Further, the foldable screen features a different hinge design, which creates a significantly less visible crease. This new hinge design, often called the “water-drop hinge,” lets the screen form a looser shape. It also enables the ability to fold in and out. According to The Verge, this hinge type also creates less stress on the panel.

Samsung has been toying with a display that can fold in and out for several years, according to Tom’s Guide. However, earlier iterations featured an S design with one section folding in and the other folding out. Unlike that design, this hinge can do both.

The Verge indicates that it’s possible the Z Fold 5 could feature this hinge, as a previous leak indicates that the phone will offer a less visible crease this year due to a waterdrop hinge design. That leak also suggests the Fold 5 could feature a 108-megapixel primary shooter, similar to the S22 Ultra.

With the Galax Z Fold 5 likely not launching until this summer, we’ll have a long time to wait until we know for sure. Samsung is expected to reveal its Galaxy S23 series later this month on February 1st.

Samsung S23 series might cost $100 more than predecessor

Samsung’s flagship smartphones might be pricier this year.

Galaxy S23 series pricing information obtained by 9to5Google suggests the phone will cost $100 more than the S22 line. 9to5 specifically cites Australian pricing information, where the S23 (128GB model) is said to cost $1,350 AUD, compared to last year’s $1,249 AUD price.

The publication also details the entire S23 series’ cost, with a $100 increase across each model compared to last year. The S23+ will start at $1,650 AUD and the S23 Ultra at $1,950 AUD.

With conversion, this means the Galaxy S23 could cost roughly $1,262 CAD, the S23+ about $1,543 and the S23 Ultra approximately $1,824. This is a significant price increase in the Canadian market, as the S22 started at $1,099. While we’ll see a price increase in Canada with the S23, it’s unlikely the smartphone will cost that much more here (my guess is the S23 will cost roughly $1,199 CAD).

That said, in the past, Samsung has added what seems like a Canadian premium cost, with devices being more expensive in Canada when compared to other regions, even after conversion. With this in mind, it’s still possible we’ll see a 128GB S23 that costs more than $1,200 CAD.

Samsung previously offered the 256GB S22 at the same price as the 128GB S22, so I’d definitely keep an eye out for launch deals.

It’s worth pointing out these are just rumours and that it’s still unclear how much the smartphone will actually cost. Samsung will officially reveal the S23’s Canadian pricing and availability on February 1st.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 reported to sport 108MP Camera Sensor

Samsung is preparing to launch its Galaxy S23 series at its Unpacked event on February 1st, but that doesn’t mean work on the company’s other flagships has come to a halt.

Samsung is developing its next generation of foldables, and according to rumours, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is set to receive a massive camera upgrade.

The information comes from Vietnamese publication The Pixel (via 9to5Google). Reportedly, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 will debut with a 108-megapixel camera sensor, similar to the one found in the Galaxy S22 Ultra, with support for OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) and dual-pixel auto focus, as well as an f/1.7 aperture and a 26mm equivalent focal length. Additionally, the upcoming device is also expected to have a 64-megapixel telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom and a 12-megapixel camera with an ultra-wide lens.

Further, the report also suggests that the Z Fold 5 will feature a S-Pen slot to store/charge the stylus when not in use. Note, the Z Fold 4 does not feature a slot for the S-Pen.

From what we know so far about the device, Samsung is trying to make the Z Fold 5’s display crease less visible. Samsung is reportedly using a “droplet” hinge for the Z Fold 5, which will allow the flagship to form a teardrop shape when closed, resulting in a less evident crease.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 could feature less noticeable display crease

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Fold 5 could feature a far less visible display crease.

According to a patent uncovered by South Korean site Naver (via SamMobile), Samsung could adopt a “droplet” hinge that allows the Fold 5’s screen to form a teardrop shape when closed. Though there have been improvements to the hinge since the launch of the first Galaxy Fold, the U-shaped display crease is still very visible.

If Samsung does make this move, it won’t be the first foldable to adopt a droplet hinge. Oppo’s Find N2 and Motorola’s 3rd-Gen both feature this style of crease (neither device was officially released in Canada).

According to Naver, Samsung patented its teardrop hinge back in 2016. It’s unclear why the tech giant didn’t opt to use the technology earlier, but it could be related to water resistance. Samsung first introduced an IPX8 rating to its foldable line with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Flip 3.

On top of the droplet hinge, the Fold 5 could sit entirely flush when closed, unlike earlier versions of the smartphone. This would make the foldable easier to slide into a pocket and prevent debris from getting in between its displays.

Given Samsung likely won’t launch its new foldables until this coming August, we have a few months to wait to find out for sure. Later this month, Samsung is expected to launch its flagship Galaxy S23 series. For more on Samsung’s foldables, check out our review of the Fold 4 and Flip 4.

Samsung Galaxy S23 alleged official marketing pics show up online

We’re now seeing alleged official renderings of the Samsung Galaxy S23 series.

These renders, shared by Roland Quandt, look a bit different from what we’ve seen in the past and kind of make the device look like an iPhone when looking at it from the side. The device sports a metal frame combined with a glass cover in all variants. Quandt suggests that Samsung used aluminum for S23 and S23+.

We also don’t see any images of the S23+ or the S23 Ultra, only the base version, the S23. The device comes in ‘Phantom Black,’ ‘Botanic Green,’ ‘Mystic Lilac,’ and ‘Cotton Flower (white).’

Looking at the device from the rear, Samsung has removed the camera bump, so all we see are the lenses protruding from the back panel.

Quandt says that the device will sport a 6.11-inch OLED display with a full HD resolution and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor.

Samsung will reveal all three models on February 1st.

Samsung Galaxy S23 series warm-up video leaks

Samsung is gearing up to launch the S23 series, which is rumoured for February. Of course, while it’s prepping material for the launch, some of it is getting leaked.

The most recent details about the handset come from the well-known Twitter leaker Ice Universe. The leaker shared two marketing videos for the upcoming S23 Ultra highlighting the phone’s low-light prowess.

While Ice Universe says that these are the S23 Ultra warm-up videos, I’m leaning on this being advertising material for the two lower-end devices. Both videos showcase three camera lenses, but the S23 Ultra is rumoured to sport four lenses, not three. In contrast, the S23 and the S23+ are rumoured to sport three lenses.

However, the second video talks about “megapixels that’ll make you say wow,” which might refer to the S23 Ultra’s rumoured 200-megapixel primary shooter.

That’s just my two cents; however, we won’t officially know until Samsung reveals the Galaxy S23 series at Unpacked, rumoured for early February.

Samsung Galaxy S23 series to sport same displays as predecessors

Samsung’s Galaxy S23 series is expected to launch in early February, so it’s not surprising that the rumour mill keeps churning.

A new leak indicates that the S23 and S23+ will lack QHD+ displays and offer technology similar to their predecessor, the S22 series. This isn’t much of a shock, and the S21 series was similar, which, at the time, was pretty depressing considering the S20 did offer that better display resolution. So, to be specific, we’re looking at FHD display quality for the S23 and S23+.

Additionally, another rumour indicates that all three S23 smartphones will sport that variable refresh rate. The S23 Ultra will have a 120Hz variable refresh rate that dips as low as 1Hz. The S23 and S23+, on the other hand, will sport a 120Hz variable refresh rate that dips as low as 48Hz.

According to other leaks, the S23 Ultra will sport aQHD+ 3088 x 1440-pixel resolution, 8GB/12GB of RAM, 256GB/512GB/1TB of storage, four rear cameras with 200-megapixel primary, 12-megapixel ultrawide, 10-megapixel 3x telephoto and a 10-megapixel telephoto with 10x optical zoom.

Recently, the S23+ and S23 Ultra were both spotted in alleged promotion material.

Samsung’s new QD-OLED TVs can hit 2,000 nits of peak brightness

Samsung’s 2023 TVs are extremely bright.

Every year at CES, TV and monitor manufacturers reveal their upcoming models, and there’s usually some sort of theme regarding new features.

For example, a few years ago, it was 3D technology, then it was the thinnest possible design, and in the last bit, we’ve seen several modular prototype televisions. But at CES 2023, the emphasis seems to be on brightness levels when it comes to arch-rivals Samsung and LG.

This is where Samsung’s 2023 QD-OLED TV lineup comes in. The South Korean tech giant says its TVs are capable of hitting 2,000 nits of brightness thanks to a new “HyperEfficient EL’ panel from Samsung’s Display. In comparison, LG’s 2023 lineup of TVs reportedly only hit 1,800 nits, which is likely why the company doesn’t specifically mention nits in its press release. Samsung also says that its new TVs feature more accurate colours and are more energy efficient.

Sizes this year include 49-inches, 55-inches, 65-inches and 77-inches. Beyond the new display technology, nothing else is known about these TVs yet, but expect them to feature Tizen OS, HDR10+, HDMI 2.1, and, unfortunately, likely Bixby integration.

Canadian pricing and availability haven’t been revealed yet, but this story will be updated as more information becomes available. For a look at LG’s 2023 TVs, follow this link.
