Canadian government announces funding for Saskatoon electric bus fleet

The City of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, will soon be one step closer to realizing its greenhouse gas reduction targets. The Government of Canada has confirmed an investment of $336,000 into the electrification of Saskatoon Transit vehicles. This funding is in addition to the $84,000 being contributed by the municipality.

According to the news release, Saskatoon Transit will create a five-phase strategy to best transition to a fully electric arsenal. Costs, infrastructure and resource requirements, and risk assessments are all on the table for review.

The initiative “will provide quieter, cleaner transit options to the city’s residents,” according to The Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities.

The funding results from the Zero Emission Transit Fund launched in 2021. The government’s transit infrastructure investment looks to support city buses’ transition to an all-electric lineup in the coming years.

SaskTel expands its 5G network to Saskatoon

SaskTel is rolling out its 5G network in Saskatoon for the first time.

The Saskatchewan-based telecom company says it has also given 5G access to 15 towers in Regina, including towers located in the downtown business district.

The company first announced the launch of its 5G services in parts of Regina in December. The company says its network will be further expanded to cover the majority of Regina and Saskatoon by year’s end.

SaskTel’s 5G network is powered by Samsung and delivers speeds up to 1.2Gbps. Once the network is fully deployed, there will be increased capacity and “ultra-low latency” allowing new uses of wireless technology for next-generation innovations.

“Today’s announcement is an important step forward as we strive to bring 5G service to our customers throughout the province,” Doug Burnett, SaskTel’s president and CEO, said in a statement.

“Combining unparalleled wireless data speeds with incredible network capacity and near real-time connections, our 5G network raises the standard for connectivity and paves the way for exciting technological innovations that will transform the way we connect to the world around us.”

To access the network, customers have to be within an area SaskTel’S 5G network covers, have a capable device, and use a compatible 5G wireless plan.

Prince cancels Saskatoon show

For Saskatonians who had difficulty believing an artist of Prince’s caliber would be playing their prairie city of 200,000, it turns out they were correct.

The Let’s Go Crazy singer cancelled his December 11 gig at the Credit Union Centre only two weeks after announcing his Welcome 2 Canada tour.

The news was announced last Monday, November 14, when officials from the amphitheater confirmed that the show would not take place, and the news was announced on the Ticketmaster website.

According to Scott Ford, director of events and marketing at Credit Union Centre, the reason for the concert cancellation was that Prince had a scheduling conflict. Ticketholders will be reimbursed at the point of purchase.
