Pedro Pascal is the perfect Mario in gritty The Last of Us-inspired SNL skit

Pedro Pascal recently made his highly-anticipated Saturday Night Live debut, and he didn’t disappoint.

After a wholesome opening monologue thanking his family in Chile, Pascal took part in a humourous skit inspired by his hit new HBO show, The Last of Us. The idea behind it was that HBO saw the success of the PlayStation video game adaptation and wanted to give the same treatment to Mario. And when we say “same,” we mean it — a dark, grounded take on the beloved Nintendo platformer series.

That’s where Pascal comes in, wearing the iconic plumber’s signature red-and-blue outfit but keeping the rugged weariness of his The Last of Us character, Joel. Like Joel, Pascal’s Mario has to escort a young girl (in this case, Princess Peach) on a dangerous journey across a ravaged world. Naturally, he uses a (Mario) kart to do so.

On a base level, it’s certainly amusing to see Nintendo’s family-friendly series reimagined in such a gritty way. But beyond that, it’s just fun to see the ever-charming Pascal ham it up as the mustachioed hero. SNL also gave us a video of Pascal dancing with the deadly Clicker creature from The Last of Us, which was incredible in and of itself.

The Last of Us is now streaming on Crave in Canada. The upcoming fifth episode of the series will premiere on the service two days early due to the Super Bowl.

Netflix adds official ‘Short-Ass Movie’ category following Pete Davidson bit

In the latest episode of Saturday Night Live, comedian Pete Davidson took part in a faux music video about wanting to stream “short-ass movies.”

Now, Netflix has responded to the skit by making ‘Short-Ass Movies’ an official category on its service. In it, you’ll find movies that are 90 minutes or less, including The MummyRambo: First BloodHappy Gilmore and Friday. These are organized by genre, including ‘Scary Movies,’ ‘Late Night Comedies,’ ‘Action Movies’ and ‘Crime Movies.’

In a statement to The Verge, Netflix confirmed that ‘Short-Ass Movies’ is now available on all of its supported devices. It should be noted, however, that the ‘Short-Ass Movies’ category isn’t really new for Netflix, as the streamer already has one for 90-minute films. As such, both highlight the same movies. Instead, this seems to just be a fun way to tie into a prominent comedian’s sketch.

Kristen Wiig splits from Fabrizio Moretti

Kristen Wiig has split from her boyfriend Fabrizio Moretti.

The 39-year-old ‘Bridesmaids’ star and The Strokes rocker, 33, recently decided to end their relationship after dating for approximately 18 months but there are no hard feelings.

A source told Us Weekly magazine: "It was very amicable and they will remain friends."

The former ‘Saturday Night Live’ star recently admitted she would love to start a family in the near future.

Earlier this month she said: "I’d like to have a family … I would love to have kids."

The actress and comedian also said she is open to the idea of marriage again, despite splitting from actor Hayes Hargrove in 2009 after just four years of married life.

She explained: "I believe if you’re in a good, healthy relationship, there is nothing better. I don’t have a specific stance on marriage. I think it’s right for some people, and I know a lot of people who didn’t believe in it, then they met someone.

"It depends on what your definition of marriage is. If you find that one person who makes you really happy, it can work and if it’s worth it, you just have to keep fighting for it."

Drake to debut new single on SNL

Rapper Drake will debut his latest single, Make Me Proud, from his upcoming album, Take Care, during tomorrow night’s broadcast of Saturday Night Live (October 15), reports MTV.

The uplifting single, explains Drake, expresses his pride in the accomplishments of women, whether she’s his Young Money label-mate Nicki Minaj – who features on the track – or any female he’s known.

"Not even necessarily that a woman has to go achieve grandiose things to be proud; it’s just that I’m proud of you for trying. It’s hard to be a woman out here these days, especially to be pretty and especially to be smart and want something for yourself," he explained.

"So I’m just proud of you whether it’s Nicki or any girl that I’ve ever known in my life that’s doing well for herself."

The positive message apparently arose out of a simple conversation: "Whenever I make songs surrounding women, I always try to find refreshing stances to take as opposed to just like, ‘Oh, you’re sexy’ or ‘Oh, I want you.’ The song, it really came up in passing conversation, just being like, ‘I’m proud of you,’" added Drake.

Lennon and McCartney almost reunited on SNL

Former Beatles Paul McCartnery and the late John Lennon almost made a reunion appearance on Saturday Night Live during the mid-1970s, reports the Daily Express.

According to McCartney, he was visiting Lennon in New York City when his former bandmate suggested they take producer Lorne Michaels up on a previous offer to appear on the show.

The original offer had been extended to all four of the Fab Four and would have paid them $3,050 to perform three numbers during the popular late-night comedy show.

"[Lennon] said, ‘We should go down, just you and me… We’ll say, ‘There’s only two of us, we’ll make half the money…’ And for a second…" McCartney revealed during an interview with Access Hollywood.

Ultimately the two musicians decided it would be too much bother and the idea fell through.

"It would have been work and we were having a night off and so we elected to not go," explained McCartney. "It was a nice idea. We nearly did it."

Katy Perry kicks off SNL

Katy Perry will be the first musical guest on Saturday Night Live’s 36th season. The singer already has some skit ideas she wants to share.

Before the official announcement, Perry posted an obscure message on her Twitter page: "Dear Amy Poehler can I please be your braced faced neighbor friend that hangs out with you & RICKKKKK!"

SNL alum Amy Poehler is hosting the first show of the new season on September 25th. One of the comedian’s characters is a 10-year old braceface named Kaitlin. Perry, herself, donned braces this year when she hosted the Teen Choice Awards in August.

Perry then added another post: "OKAY! My BIG surprise is I’m opening the season of SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE on Sept 25 W/SNL Alum Amy Poehler!!!"

California Gurls hitmaker Katy Perry is on a role this year. Her summer anthem, featuring Snoop Dogg, sits at number one on the iTunes singles chart. She is up for two awards at the MTV Video Music Awards. And she is getting married to funny man Russell Brand.

SNL would not confirm whether Perry will be included in any skits when she appears on the show.

Kanye West has finished his penance

When Kanye West acted on impulse at the MTV Video Music Awards last year and interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech, he received a flurry of criticism and backlash in response. Even Barack Obama made a rather non-presidential comment when asked what he thought of the incident.

Now that the dust has settled, West is ready to step back into the spotlight. The first single off his new album, Power, was leaked online so one and all can hear what he has to say.

He attacks, among others, the entire cast of Saturday Night Live who made lots of fun of him last year. He doesn’t mince words by inviting them to kiss his royal a**.

The song starts out with Kanye West describing himself as a 21st century man who is making a difference and doing it better than anyone else. It’s easy to see that he didn’t lose touch with his inflated ego during that self-imposed exile.

He gives shout outs to other artists like Drake, Lil Wayne and, above all, Jay-Z who he acknowledges has become a rap legend. He also says he is ready to prove he is better than the rest.

The track runs six minutes and samples the song 21st Century Schizoid Man by King Crimson from 1969.

The drums are very aggressive just like Kanye West’s tone and lyrics. There could very well be an explicit language warning on his next album.

Lady Gaga to Perform New Song

Lady Gaga, the latest sensation who keeps the crowd on their toes with her riveting performances, has a surprise in store for her fans when she performs on Saturday Night Live on Saturday, October 3.

The singer is performing one week after U2 lit up the SNL stage with 3 songs, which is one more than artists typically perform on the show.

For her appearance, Lady Gaga will be singing her new top-secret song, as well as Paparazzi, which has already been announced.

“I wrote almost a full album’s worth of material and right now I’m kind of spending my time sifting through it all and doctoring it and making it perfect and deciding what I want everyone to hear,” the star told radio stations in Las Vegas and San Diego.

The new song to be heard this Saturday could be found on her new disc, The Fame, which is set for release on November 24.

Britney Spears on Saturday Night Live

Britney Spears may be performing a skit on the popular show, Saturday Night Live, on November 22.

According to a source, the singer is currently in talks and hopes that her participation will help her return to the music scene with the release of her album Circus on December 2.

"She is really nervous about it, but thinks it will finally convince people she has put her troubled past behind her and has the ability to laugh at herself," said the source.

In addition to the skit, she is reportedly going to perform a song from her new album.

This will be the singer’s third appearance on the show. She was the youngest gal to have guest starred on SNL.

The latest decision follows the success of her appearance on How I Met Your Mother earlier this year.
