Samsung unveils new Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro at Unpacked

At its recent Unpacked event, Samsung announced the new and refreshed Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro, the successors of the 2021-released Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic.

Both the new watches are a spectacle, with the Watch 5 rocking an armour aluminum case with a sport band and the Watch 5 Pro sporting a titanium case with a D-Buckle sport band. The watches run on Google’s latest wearOS 3.5 with Samsung’s One UI Watch 4.5 and are powered by the Exynos W920 Dual-Core 1.18GHz processor.

Other internals include 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch 5 comes in 44mm and 40mm size variants, with a 1.4-inch Sapphire Crystal Super AMOLED display for the former and a 1.2-inch Super AMOLED display for the latter. The Pro counterpart comes in a 45mm variant and a 1.4-inch Super AMOLED panel. Both watches feature full-colour always-on displays and the same circular screen design as their predecessors.

However, this time around, Samsung decided to omit the popular rotating bezel.

The Watch 5 40mm has a 284mAh battery, and the 44mm model has a 410mAh battery, whereas the pro model sports a larger 590mAh battery. Both the Pro and regular Watch 5 models are available in both Bluetooth and LTE network configurations, with support for staple features like heart rate monitoring, sleep monitoring, ECG, fall detection, blood pressure monitoring, blood oxygen monitoring, several sports modes and more.

Further, both the Pro and regular models are IP68 rated for dust and water resistance, alongside salt, shock and radiation protection.

The Galaxy Watch 5 40mm is available in ‘Graphite,’ ‘Pink Gold’ and ‘Silver,’ whereas the 44mm version is available in ‘Graphite,’ ‘Sapphire’ and ‘Silver’ colourways. On the other hand, the Watch 5’s Pro counterpart is available in ‘Black Titanium’ and ‘Gray Titanium’ colourways.

Galaxy Watch 5 series spotted in Samsung Health beta update

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro were both spotted in the latest Samsung Health app beta update.

9to5Google dug into the latest build of the Samsung Health app (6.22.0.069), and it mentions the two smartwatches with Galaxy Watch 4 placeholder images. Reportedly, last year, Samsung did the same, adding the Galaxy Watch 4 about a month before its launch.

Samsung’s Health beta app doesn’t show anything more about either of the smartwatches; however, it does confirm that Samsung is ditching its ‘Classic’ lineup this year. We’ve previously heard this leak, initially from GalaxyClubThat leak said there were three Galaxy catch codenames ‘Heart-S,’ ‘Heart-L’ and ‘Heart-Pro,’ which likely means the Galaxy Watch 5 will come in two size variants, and the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro will come in a single variant.

Other Galaxy Watch 5 leaks suggest the Watch 5 Pro will use sapphire glass and titanium to improve the durability of the smartwatch. Additionally, the Watch 5 series will have bigger batteries than its predecessor.

It’s unclear when Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Watch 5 series, but it will likely be alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 foldables, sometime this summer.

Users report Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 getting ECG update in Canada

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 seems to be getting an update that many Canadians have been looking forward to.

A new update that hit one of our Canadian reader’s wearable indicates that the Galaxy Watch 4 finally features blood-pressure and ECG monitoring in Canada. The update is available with Galaxy smartphones running Android 7.0 or later.

Back in February, Samsung made a blog post about the Galaxy Watch 4 getting ECG in Canada, but users say the update didn’t hit their devices in March like was scheduled to.

Now, many have turned to Twitter and the Samsung’s community forums, commenting that the update has finally arrived.

We’ve reached out to Samsung for official confirmation regarding the features’ release.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 always could monitor ECG, but without Canadian regulator clearance, the feature wasn’t accessible.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 will reportedly sport a bigger battery

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 is the perfect smartwatch for people firmly planted in Samsung’s ecosystem of devices. However, during my time with the wearable, I found that its battery life isn’t very impressive.

Its rumoured successor, the Galaxy Watch 5, will reportedly feature better battery life. Certification documentation first spotted by SamMobile indicates that the Galaxy Watch 5 will sport a battery of 276mAh. In comparison, the Galaxy Watch 4 ships with a 247mAh battery.

With a larger battery in the smaller variant, it’s also likely the Galaxy Watch 5 will feature a bigger battery as well.

Further, the Galaxy Watch 5 might also include a temperature sensor. According to SamMobile, the Galaxy Watch 5 will launch in the third quarter of the year, likely around August or September.

Apple reportedly working on three Apple Watch models for 2022 release

Apple could have several Apple Watch models currently in the works.

According to often-reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, as first reported by MacRumors, Apple’s 2022 smartwatch lineup will include the Apple Watch Series 8, the second-gen Apple Watch SE and a more rugged, “extreme sports” version of the wearable.

Earlier this week in his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman also mentioned that Apple plans to release a “rugged” Apple Watch. Gurman’s report describes this new version of the Apple Watch as targeting athletes, bikers and people into extreme sports.

Given two sources have independently mentioned this new version of the Apple Watch’s existence, there’s likely at least some level of truth to the rumours. It’s unclear what features will be included in the Series 8 or 2nd-gen SE. That said, rumours regarding Apple Watch blood glucose monitoring have appeared several times over the past few years.

Kuo says that these three new Apple Watch models with will release in 2022.

Huawei reveals Watch GT 3 and FreeBuds Lipstick

Yesterday, Huawei announced that its Nova 9 (not coming to Canada) and P50 (potentially coming here) will both launch globally. However, the company also announced the Huawei Watch GT 3 and FreeBuds Lipstick earbuds.

The Watch GT 3 is launching in 46mm and 42mm variants, and Huawei says they offer a “timeless elegance.” Both watches can measure more than 100 workout modes, sport a built-in workout planner with improved location tracking and a 5th generation heart rate monitor.

Additionally, the watch features SpO2 monitoring, sleep tracking, Bluetooth and is compatible with both Android and iOS devices. Further, Huawei says that the Watch GT 3 46mm can reportedly last 14 days, and the smaller variant can last seven days.

On the other hand, the FreeBuds Lipstick comes in red and sports a high-grade stainless steel enclosure that looks like a lipstick case. The earbuds are compatible with Android and iOS. The FreeBuds Lipstick seem identical to the FreeBuds 4 in several ways, including their 14.3mm dynamic driver, with a frequency range spanning up to 40kHz and four hours of playback with an extra 22 hours with the case.

It’s possible we’ll see the Watch GT 3 and FreeBuds Lipstick release in Canada. MobileSyrup has reached out to Huawei for confirmation.

Samsung brings its web browser to the Galaxy Watch 4

When I reviewed the Galaxy Watch 4, I had a great experience with the smartwatch, but apparently, it was missing a web browser (I didn’t even notice). Now, Samsung has rectified this issue and brought its web browser to the wearable.

This feature was initially available with Samsung’s Tizen watches, but with the move to Google’s Wear OS, Samsung’s browser originally wasn’t available with the Galaxy Watch 4. As you may have already assumed, the Wear OS version of Samsung’s Internet app features a browser that lets users access webpages directly from their wrist.

When you first use the wearable browser, you’ll see a guide that shows how the app is optimized for your wrist. For example, a diagonal swipe from either side of the screen allows users to see the corners of a webpage, a swipe up reveals bookmarks, “Zoom mode,” and a shortcut to send webpages to your phone.

The browser’s opening page also shows a list of Samsung Internet bookmarks synced with your smartphone.

While having a browser on your wrist might be helpful occasionally, the app also looks a little clunky. With that in mind, I don’t think any smartwatch really needs a dedicated web browser, especially when you can just ask Bixby questions with the Galaxy Watch 4.
