TikTok to roll out new policy features for LIVE

TikTok is implementing a number of new tools for its live streaming feature, ‘LIVE.’

Starting November 23rd, the social media will increase the age people must be before going LIVE from 16 to 18.

A second new feature will allow creators to choose if they only want to reach adult audiences while hosting a live stream.

“We want our community to make the most of the opportunities LIVE can bring without compromising on safety,” TikTok said in a blog post.

“We believe these industry-leading updates can further protect the younger members of our community as they start and build their online presence.”

TikTok didn’t list an exact date to implement the change, just saying it would happen “in the coming weeks.”

A similar date is listed for an update of its keyword filtering tool that allows users to limit comments while LIVE. The update will send keyword suggestions to creators based on content creators commonly remove from a live stream.

“We have a vibrant and inspiring community on TikTok, and it’s important that our platform remains a safe, supportive, and joyful place for our community,” the company says.

Twitter is working on a mention-limiting feature

Found by reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong, the feature lets users to toggle three different mention settings.

  1. Anyone can mention you
  2. Only people you follow can mention you
  3. Turn mentions off completely

Further, according to The Verge, Twitter privacy designer Dominic Camozzi confirmed in a Tweet that the feature is currently in development, only to delete the Tweet later.

The new feature is sure to help users on the platform avoid unnecessary confrontations and make bullying less prevalent on the platform.

Other similar privacy-focused Twitter features include the ability to ‘Unmention’ yourself from conversations, and limiting who can reply to your Tweets.

Warner Bros. and The Rock inviting fans to ‘exclusive’ Black Adam event in Toronto

Warner Bros. Canada has announced a “world-exclusive” event in Toronto for Black Adam that gives more than 900 fans a chance to see the superhero movie early with star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Following that, fans will head to the Scotiabank Theatre for an early screening of the DC Comics movie, which opens to the general public on October 21st.

Throughout the day, attendees will have the chance to win:

  • A trip to Los Angeles for a winner and guest (includes airfare, hotel, and tickets to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood)
  • Annual Cineplex CineClub Memberships
  • An evening at the Shangri-La Hotel in Toronto, including complimentary breakfast and afternoon tea for two

Instagram is experiencing issues right now

If you’re experiencing issues with using Instagram right now, you aren’t alone.

According to reports on Twitter, Reddit and DownDetector, the Meta-owned social media platform is currently experiencing problems.

Downdetector indicates reports surrounding Instagram issues spiked at roughly 1pm ET/10am PT. The issues seem to be across both Instagram’s Android and iOS.

Some reports state that Instagram is entirely crashing, while others are unable to load stories and images/video in their feed. My Instagram feed still seems to be working like normal.

Meta’s other platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp appear to still be working. It’s unclear what the source of the issue is. This story will be updated when Instagram is back online.

Twitter is finally getting an edit button, and it’s coming to Canada first

Twitter Canada has confirmed that some Canadian Twitter Blue subscribers will soon have access to an edit button as early as September.

The social network says it’s testing the ‘Edit Tweet’ button with Blue subscribers to learn more about how people use the feature before bringing it to all Twitter users later. In the initial version of the Edit Tweet feature, tweets will be able to be edited a “few times” in a 30-minute window following their publication.

All edited tweets will feature an icon, timestamp and label to indicate that the original tweet has been changed. When you tap on the label, you’ll also be able to view an ‘Edit History’ to view all past versions of the tweet.

“Like any new feature, we’re intentionally testing Edit Tweet with a smaller group to help us identify and resolve potential issues before it’s shared with the public. Since this is our most requested feature to date, we want to make sure we get it right,” said Twitter Canada in a statement.

Twitter Blue, the platform’s $3.49/month subscription service, first launched in Canada and Australia in June 2021 before expanding to the U.S. in November 2021. Canada has been the test market for other Twitter features in the past, including ‘Notes’ and ‘Hide replies.’

An edit button has been rumoured to be coming to Twitter for several years, with frequent leaks surrounding the feature appearing over the last few months. As a regular typo creator that spends far too much time on Twitter, I’ve been waiting for an edit button to hit the social network for years.

One-time Twitter buyer Elon Musk is still attempting to find ways out of his commitment to purchase the social network. In his most recent move, Musk alleges that Twitter breached six separate provisions regarding the acquisition.

Twitter rolling out its Circle feature to all users following months of testing

Twitter is now rolling out its circle feature to all users. Following months of testing across a “small group” of iOS, Android, and web users, more people can now take advantage of the feature.

Twitter Circles enables users to select up to 150 other users who can see and interact with a Tweet. It allows users to have more control and flexibility on who they engage with on a Tweet-by-Tweet basis.

As part of the announcement, Twitter states that circles were met with “overwhelmingly positive” responses. Now global users across iOS, Android, and the web can now start engaging with the circle feature.

As the feature is now active, users can select whether to share a Tweet with their full list of followers or their circle. If selecting the circle, users can choose up to 150 other people to share with. The selection can always be amended and adjusted on the fly. Plus, Twitter confirms that users will not be notified if they are added or removed from a Circle.

Tweets sent to a circle appear with a green badge indicating the status. These tweets are not able to be shared or Retweeted. Plus, all replies are private, ensuring they stay within your circle.

As part of Twitter’s testing phase, which started in May, the company states it saw an increase in overall Tweeting. Additionally, Tweet engagement rate on circles also increased.

Vancouver-based Hootsuite to lay off roughly 300 employees

Vancouver, Canada-based social media management platform Hootsuite is laying off 30 percent of its task force as part of a global restructuring, as reported by the Toronto Star.

According to financial data firm Refinitiv, the company currently has a staff of 1,000, so that’s 300 people who no longer have a job at Hootsuite.

“Today is a hard day at Hootsuite…This sadly means we are saying goodbye to some of our people,” said Hootsuite CEO Tom Keiser, in a statement given to the Toronto Star. “These people are our colleagues and our friends. They are some of the best in their fields, and we will do whatever we can to help them land well elsewhere.”

According to Keiser, laying off some of its employees will allow it to realign with the strategies that can help it become successful again, including driving efficiency, growth and financial sustainability.

This comes amid a time of global economic turmoil, and soon after other Canadian tech companies like WealthSimple and Shopify laid off 13 percent and 10 percent of their employees, respectively.

Similarly, Toronto-based e-commerce investing platform Clearco cut its workforce by 25 percent in July, while Vancouver-based software company Unbounce laid off 20 percent of its staff earlier this week.
