Netflix’s Sonic the Hedgehog series finally has a release date

A Sonic the Hedgehog series that was first tweeted about back in 2020 is finally ending production, and is set to release on Netflix later this year.

The 3D animated series, titled Sonic Prime, is being animated by Vancouver-based WildBrain, and is set to premiere on December 15th, as shared by @NetflixGeeked.

In a brief synopsis about the series provided by Netflix back in 2021, the streaming service described the series as a “24-episode animated adventure for kids, families, and long-time fans draws upon the keystones of the brand and features the ‘Blue Blur’ of video game fame in a high-octane adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse rests in his gloved hands.”

In addition to saving the universe, Sonic will undergo “a journey of self-discovery and redemption,” per the synopsis.

The voice cast on the upcoming series includes Deven Mack as Sonic, Brian Drummond as Eggman, Ashleigh Ball as Tails, Shannon Chan-Kent as Amy Rose, Adam Nurada as Knuckles, and Ian Hanlin as Shadow and Big the Cat.

Subsequently, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is scheduled to hit theatres in December 2024.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is now streaming on Paramount+ in Canada

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has begun streaming on Paramount+ in Canada.

While we knew that the Sega video game adaptation would be available on the service in the U.S. on May 24th, given its 45-day theatrical exclusivity, it wasn’t previously clear where it would stream in Canada. A Paramount+ subscription costs $5.99 CAD/month.

In the sequel to 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic allies with a crafty fox named Tails to face off once more against the evil Dr. Robotnik, who has enlisted the dangerous Knuckles the Echidna.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was once again directed by Jeff Fowler and features returning cast members Ben Schwartz (Sonic), James Marsden (Tom), Newmarket, Ontario’s own Jim Carrey (Robotnik), Tika Sumpter (Maddie) and Canadian-raised Lee Majdoub (Stone). Meanwhile, Idris Elba voices Knuckles and Colleen O’Shaughnessy reprises her fan-favourite role of Tails from the Sonic video games. It’s also worth noting that much of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was shot in Vancouver, just like the first film.

Since its release in early April, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has grossed more than $375 million USD (about $482.5 million CAD) worldwide, making it the highest-grossing video game film to date. Paramount is currently developing a third Sonic film, as well as a Paramount+ spin-off series focused on Elba’s Knuckles.

On the video game front, Sega is set to release the Sonic Origins remaster collection next month and the mysterious open-world title Sonic Frontiers later this year.

You can win these truly horrifying Sonic the Hedgehog Xbox controllers

Xbox and Paramount Pictures have teamed up on a contest to win a prize package inspired by the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 2 movie.

Specifically, entrants can snag a custom black Xbox Series S console with the video game movie’s versions of protagonist Sonic and antagonist Knuckles, as well as two controllers inspired by the hedgehog and echidna. However, these aren’t just your standard plastic gamepads — bizarrely, they’ve been given “textured” coatings to simulate Sonic and Knuckles’ fur.

On Twitter, fans were quick to point out that these hairy controllers won’t exactly mix well with palm sweat:

…Or food residue, for that matter:

If the console and/or (frightening) controllers are your thing, you can enter for a chance to win them over on Twitter by retweeting this Xbox tweet with the hashtag #XboxSonic2Sweepstakes. This method of entry is available in many countries, including Canada. The contest ends on April 4th.

As the title suggests, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a sequel to 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which opened right before the start of the pandemic to solid box office performance and generally positive reviews.

In the new film, Sonic (Ben Schwartz) teams up with Tom (James Marsden) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) to stop Dr. Eggman (Newmarket, Ontario’s own Jim Carrey) and Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba) from conquering the world with the Master Emerald. Notably, the sequel was primarily shot in Vancouver, just like the first film.

Meanwhile, Sega’s next game in the long-running Sonic video game series, Sonic Frontiers, is set to hit consoles and PC in late 2022.
