Sony’s new ‘PlayStation Games for PC’ website highlights current and upcoming titles

Sony has just launched a new “PlayStation Games for PC” website, which, as the name suggests, lets you explore a range of titles from PlayStation Studios that are available on PC via Steam or the Epic Games Store, first reported by The Gamer.

Alongside available titles, the website also has a “Coming soon” section that lists the PlayStation Studios’ titles coming to PC in the future, with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and UNCHARTED: Legacy of Thieves Collection as the only two titles listed for launch sometime in 2022.

The “Now available” section highlights titles like God of War, Days Gone, Horizon Zero Dawn, Helldivers, Predator Hunting Grounds and the recently released Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, alongside ‘buy’ buttons for Steam and the Epic Games Store.

The bottom of the website features a FAQ section with answers to questions like “Do I need a PSN account to Play PlayStation games on PC?” to which the website says, “No, you currently do not need a PSN account to enjoy PlayStation Studios games on PC.” What Sony aims to imply by saying ‘currently’ is unclear, though it might be that gamers would soon need to have an active PSN account to be able to play PlayStation games on PC. Further, the section makes it clear that the PC and console versions of the games are different, and you can’t purchase the game on one platform and play it on the other.

A recent datamine of Spider-Man Remastered on PC found code that suggests that Sony is looking to launch its own PC launcher in the near future, similar to Ubisoft’s Ubisoft Connect, EA’s The EA App, Activision Blizzard’s Battle.Net and more. The fact that Sony says “you currently do not need a PSN account to enjoy PlayStation Studios games on PC,” might indicate that users would have to use their PSN account to log into the rumoured launcher in the future to access PlayStation titles on PC.

Weak game sales prompt Sony to cut its annual profit outlook

Amid weaker PlayStation game sales, Sony expects the business to secure fewer profits, as revealed in its Q1 Financial Year 2022 Consolidated Financial Results, via Bloomberg.

According to the Tokyo, Japan-based company, it expects to secure 1.11 trillion yen ($10.6 billion CAD) in operating profit, down from the 1.16 trillion yen ($11.1 billion CAD) it had expected previously. The ‘Gaming and Network Services Group,’ which encompasses Sony’s PlayStation business bore the brunt, taking a 16 percent cut from 305 billion yen ($2.9 billion CAD) to 255 billion yen ($2.4 billion CAD).

Sony’s PS5 hardware production isn’t running on full scale either, owing to supply chain woes originating from the recent lockdowns in China. The company revealed that lifetime shipments of the PlayStation 5 reached 21.7 million units in the last quarter, out of which, 2.4 million consoles were shipped in the last quarter, up four percent from the 2.3 million units sold in the same quarter last year. “While we stand pat on our projection of selling 18 million units of PS5 this fiscal year, conditions surrounding PlayStation 5 are improving,” said Sony’s chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki. “We plan to front-load shipments for the year-end shopping season.”

Further, Sony said in an investor call after releasing its financial results that a lack of big PlayStation title releases, as compared to 2021, paired with people spending less time playing games is what hurt sales. According to Sony, its active PlayStation Network users dropped by 3 percent to 102 million from roughly 105 million.

Sony dropping its exclusives Gran Turismo 7 and Horizon Forbidden West around the same time as Elden Ring also reportedly hampered sales.

The company’s new PlayStation Plus subscription tier, combined with games like The Last of Us Part I remake, Forspoken and God of War: Ragnarok should help the company boost sales and increase its profit outlook for the coming quarters.

Sony’s PSVR 2 will support over 20 major titles upon release

Leaks and rumours about Sony’s PlayStation VR 2 have been circulating online for the better part of 2022, but now we have official word from Sony about where it’s headed with the virtual reality headset.

In a ‘Game & Network Services Segment’ investor presentation by the company’s president and CEO Jim Ryan, Sony talks about the new PlayStation Plus subscription model, the continued growth of PlayStation Direct, free-to-play titles, supply issues and most importantly the PSVR 2.

While not much was revealed about the device itself (only one slide dedicated to the PSVR2), Sony did reveal that the device will feature an enhanced 4K resolution with an expanded field of view, new sensory features, upgraded visual fidelity and enhanced tracking controls. Additionally, the device will come with “new controller[s] with great ergonomics, haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.”

The virtual reality headset can connect to the PlayStation 5 with a single cord (likely to be an HDMI), and will launch with support for 20+ “major first-party and third-party titles.” Sony didn’t name any of the titles, though its presentation makes it clear that the previously announced Horizon: Call of the Mountain spinoff will be included.

It’s unclear when Sony plans to release the PSVR 2, but rumours paired with current supply chain issues point to it releasing at some point in 2023.
