PlayStation developing new Twisted Metal as part of larger multimedia strategy: report

PlayStation is working on a revival of its Twisted Metal franchise, according to separate reports from VentureBeat‘s Jeff Grubb and VideoGamesChronicle.

First mentioned on Grubb’s Giant Bomb show and later corroborated by VGC, the new Twisted Metal is said to be in early development. The last entry in the vehicular combat series, simply titled Twisted Metal, was released on the PlayStation 3 in 2012.

Last month, Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe also said he heard a new Twisted Metal was in the works, although he isn’t involved with it.

Otherwise, no further details on the new Twisted Metal have been provided, but Grubb said the game is part of a larger multimedia push from Sony. “I think Twisted Metal is in the works but it may still be a ways off, so I think we’re early,” Grubb said. “That speaks to a larger strategy shift from Sony – well, it’s not even a shift, it’s a ‘broadening’ of their strategy.”

He goes on to say that “it does seem like [Sony] is potentially greenlighting games to coincide with their attempts to release movies and television shows based on these properties.”

Grubb is referring to the ‘PlayStation Productions’ division that Sony has created to develop film and TV projects based on its video games. The Twisted Metal revival would coincide with the eponymous live-action series that was confirmed earlier this yearDeadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are producing the series alongside Toronto’s own Will Arnett.

“It seems that they are going to try to line these things up with games at the same time, and the thinking there is one, they looked at [the Marvel Cinematic Universe] and they want to have MCU-like success, and I think there’s a thought inside of Sony that, ‘hey, we make movies, why aren’t we capitalising on that?’” said Grubb.

It’s worth noting that Sony is actually an active part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the company has partnered with Marvel Studios on two Tom Holland-led Spider-Man films (with a third, No Way Home, coming in December) and three ensemble films.

This would also explain why Sony is reportedly working on a PS5 remake of The Last of Us. While many people were surprised that a game that’s not even 10 years old was getting remade, Grubb’s comments suggest that Sony is doing so, at least in part, to capitalize on its The Last of Us HBO series. It should be noted that the show is still filming in Calgary and does not have a premiere date. Nonetheless, the idea of releasing a souped-up version of the original The Last of Us around the same time as the show would, in theory, bring in even more players.

“There is a prestige attached to Hollywood and prestige television that I think Sony is craving a bit, but also it’s good business,” said Grubb. To that point, he mentioned how CD Projekt’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt reached record player counts following the premiere of Netflix’s The Witcher series. Even though the two aren’t connected outside of their shared source material, the series clearly led scores of people to dive into the fantasy-RPG — four years after it was originally released, no less.

This begs the question, then, of what other games PlayStation might be working on as part of this cross-media synergy. The most logical answer is a new Uncharted. After years of development hell, a live-action Uncharted film starring Tom Holland is set to finally hit theatres in February 2022. At the same time, it’s been rumoured that MLB The Show developer Sony San Diego is working on a new Uncharted now that Naughty Dog has seemingly moved on from the series. John Wick director Chad Stahelski is also set to helm a Ghost of Tsushima movie, which, alongside the success of last year’s eponymous game, could indicate a sequel is on the way.

In any event, we’ll have to wait until Sony is ready to show any of these games.

Shakira close to 60m record deal with Sony?

Shakira is reportedly close to signing a new record deal worth up to $60 million.

The ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ hitmaker will continue to be one of the biggest earning stars in the music industry if she and concert promoter Live Nation put pen to paper on the three-album deal with Sony, which will see the two companies work together on her future projects.

Shakira is one of a handful of superstars, including Madonna and Jay-Z, who have ditched their record labels in recent years to sign huge contracts with Live Nation, who will get a cut of the revenue from merchandise, sponsorships and concerts, the New York Post reports.

The Colombian beauty previously left Sony to sign a 10-year deal with Live Nation, estimated to be worth between $70 million and $100 million, back in 2008.

Last month, the ‘Addicted to You’ singer took home four prizes at the Billboard Latin Music Awards – Female Songs Artist of the Year, Female Albums Artist of the Year, Solo Latin Pop Songs Artist of the Year, and Social Network Artist of the Year – and she recently teamed up with DJ Afrojack to work on new material.

Oasis manager denies false rumors

Former Oasis manager Alan McGee denies rumors that his chance meeting with the band was actually set up by the music bosses at Sony, reports FemaleFirst.

The official story has always been that McGee caught an Oasis gig completely by luck, having arrived early for another group’s show. The manager was so impressed with the fledgling band that he signed them on the spot, launching one of the most successful British bands in the last 20 years.

Recently, however, rumors have come out claiming the "chance meeting" story was fabricated and McGee’s attendance at the gig was set up by the big wigs at Sony Music – claims which McGee adamantly denies.

"You’re believing rubbish! Of course I was there! Ask Noel Gallagher! I’ve heard this story once before – someone connected to The Libertines said that Sony gave them to me. As if Sony would give me a band that sold 50 million records to put out so I could get all the money!" he told NME Magazine.

"Life’s not that nice! People don’t actually want to give you credit. I’ve heard that I didn’t find Oasis, I didn’t do this, I didn’t do that. How many things didn’t I f—— do?"

Susan Boyle #1 artist at Sony

It’s safe to say that without the instant YouTube popularity of her Britain’s Got Talent TV appearance in 2009, Boyle would not be enjoying her current level of success.

However, the arrival of the Internet, and its global role in discovering talents has obviously changed the musical landscape in recent years. Justin Bieber and Susan Boyle are two great examples. For both, the transition from anonymity to stardom has occurred at the speed of light

To prove this, Sony awarded another honour to the Scottish singer celebrating her 50th birthday this year: top-selling international artist.

In just two albums, the second one dating back only two months, Boyle has managed to sell 14 million records at home and abroad.

She tells The Sun, "Words can’t describe how happy I am. I’ve loved every minute and I can’t wait to get back in the studio again and for all the other exciting projects in 2011."

The Backstreet Boys leave their record label

The long and fruitful association between Jive Records, owned by Sony, and the Backstreet Boys is over. According to band member Brian Littrell, the break up was amicable and gives the group a new lease on life.

The band released a statement on its website. Littrell says: "This is the best thing, at the best time that could have ever happened for us. We are confident in the future of our band, and are looking forward to the new things to come. 2011 is going to be a great year for us!"

Since their eponymous album was released in 1996, the Backstreet Boys have sold 130 million copies of the seven albums they put on the market with Jive Records. They had one of the most successful  relationships in pop music.

The group did not indicate whether they have already signed or will sign with another record label or if they plan to sell their music directly online.

JLo looks for a new label

Jennifer Lopez’s manager, Benny Medina, released a statement saying "Jennifer had a wonderful relationship with the Sony Music group, and they have shared many successes together, but the time was right to make a change that best serves the direction her career as an actress and recording artist. She is grateful and appreciative to everyone at Sony for all that they accomplished together."

However, there are whispers that the label dropped the singer-actress. Her latest single Louboutins has not been that successful. She had a disappointing performance at the American Music Awards in November. Her last film El Cantante earned only $7.5 million. These are all signs that Sony Music Epic Records concluded Jennifer Lopez’s star is on the decline.

JLo now needs to find a new label. She is rumoured to be in talks with Island Def Jam’s L.A. Reid.

The release of her new album has been delayed until April. She is scheduled to host Saturday Night Live this weekend and also perform as the musical guest.

Sony Launches an Internet Investigation

Sony management wants to find the person responsible for the leak of the duet between the music superstars without permission.

Kravitz has confirmed that he worked with the King of Pop on the song Another Day, which appeared on the Web over the weekend.

In a video posted on his Website, Kravitz said that he’d like to see the song released in its entirety once the Sony investigation is over.  He added that he had nothing to do with the leak, and that his version of the song has been kept in a safe since it was recorded.

"The DJ who’s speaking over the track – I don’t know who that person is. I don’t know how they obtained it. I don’t know what their purpose is but that person has nothing to do with the track. The song was recorded by Michael and myself. I produced it for him. I wrote the song and I played all the instruments on the track," said Kravitz.

Sony executives, with the help and support of lawyers for Jackson’s estate, are currently trying to remove the sample from the Internet.  They hope to find the origin of the leak.
