Intel found a flaw in AMD’s Spectre mitigation, AMD issues fix

Intel’s security team found a flaw in AMD’s old ‘LFENCE/JMP’ patch to mitigate Spectre vulnerabilities across several generations of Ryzen and Threadripper CPUs.

In response, AMD issued a security bulletin recommending the use of alternate mitigation options. The update also had additional information for software developers.

Spectre is a type of security flaw that affects almost all modern Intel and AMD processors. It can potentially allow attackers to access sensitive data without detection. Worse, last week researchers found that Intel and Arm processors are susceptible to a new kind of ‘Spectre v2’ attack.

Intel uncovered the issue with LFENCE/JMP while investigating the new vulnerability. AMD implemented LFENCE/JMP in 2018 to mitigate against Spectre, but Intel’s researchers found it doesn’t adequately protect against the threat.

As per AMD’s security bulletin, the weakness in LFENCE/JMP spans the following chips:

  • Gen 1, 2, and 3 AMD Epyc processors
  • AMD Ryzen 2000, 3000, and 5000 series desktop processors
  • AMD Ryzen 4000 and 5000 series desktop processors with Radeon graphics
  • 2nd and 3rd Gen Ryzen Threadripper
  • AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro
  • AMD Athlon 3000 series mobile processors with Radeon graphics
  • AMD Ryzen 2000 and 3000 series mobile processors
  • 2nd Gen AMD Ryzen mobile processor with Radeon graphics
  • AMD Ryzen 3000, 4000, and 5000 series with Radeon graphics
  • AMD Athlon, Athlon 3000, and Ryzen 3000 mobile processors with Radeon graphics for Chromebook

You can view the full list here.

The researchers who found the flaw performed the exploit on Linux, but so far there haven’t been examples of the using the exploit on platforms like Windows.

Finally, The Verge points out that patches for Spectre-related vulnerabilities have been known to cause performance issues, especially on older hardware. However, benchmarking platform Phoronix tested the impact of initial patches for Intel and AMD chips in 2019 and found AMD CPUs were less affected than Intel.

Kate Winslet’s daughter wants to be an actress

Kate Winslet’s daughter wants to become an actress.

The Oscar winner has revealed 15-year-old Mia wants to follow in her footsteps and Kate is very happy for her to join the family business.

When asked whether Mia has any interest in acting, Kate admitted: ”She does very much so. There’s a lot of positivity around it in our house and what I really enjoy is that she’s grown up not just watching me do it, but also learning how to respect it and that’s what’s nice for me.”

Kate lets her older kids – Mia, whose dad is filmmaker Jim Threapleton, and 11-year-old Joe, whose father is ‘SPECTRE’ director Sam Mendes – join her sometimes on her movie sets and she thinks it’s wonderful she’s been able to share her work with them.

During an appearance on UK TV show ‘Lorraine’, she said: ”They don’t sit and hang out and watch the monitor and have headphones on and treat the place like it’s their own playground, they really come as a treat to work, and so they really observe and ask lots of questions. My son’s father is a director so he gets to experience it a little bit with him too, it’s an extraordinary world to live in. It’s a wonderful job and I’ve been very fortunate and I wouldn’t discourage them from whatever they chose to do. They certainly seem to be showing signs of being very interested.”

Kate also has 23-month-old Bear with current husband Ned Rocknroll.

Monica Bellucci says ‘good sex’ is key to healthy life

Monica Bellucci believes ”good sex” is the key to a healthy lifestyle.

The ‘SPECTRE’ actress doesn’t agree with following a strict diet and a tough workout regime to stay in shape because she thinks getting frisky beneath the sheets and filling up on greens is the perfect combination for a long and happy life.

She said: ”I’m not someone who wakes up at 6am to go to the gym. So I just didn’t eat pasta for a few days before we started shooting [the new James Bond movie] and that was about it. Because the truth is I like cakes and pasta, the odd glass of wine and very occasional cigarette.”

She added: ”My advice is: eat well, drink well, have good sex and laugh a lot. The rest comes all on its own.”

Meanwhile, the 51-year-old star – who has two daughters Leonie and Deva, 11, with her estranged husband Vincent Cassel – may be famous for her incredible curves, jaw-dropping good looks and talent on screen but she is adamant she won’t do anymore nude scenes in the future.

She told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper’s Stella magazine: [I’ll do] sexy, but not nude. I have done them in the past, of course – and it’s not because I’ve had children that I have to do things that are proper. I’m an actress, so I had to use my body to express so many things.”

Daniel Craig: Kanye West should play James Bond

Daniel Craig thinks Kanye West should play James Bond.

The ‘SPECTRE’ star has already tipped a woman or a black actor to take on the role of the suave super spy, and after hearing Kanye’s name put in the frame he claims the rapper would be just as good a choice as anybody to take the wheel of the franchise once he parks up his Aston Martin for the final time.

He quipped: ”Is Kanye the new one? F**k it, yeah, get him in now.”

However, Craig is growing a little tired of the endless speculation about his successor especially as he’s yet to call time on his 007 tenure.

He added to GQ Australia magazine: ”You know Roger Moore’s also 200-1? So too David Beckham. Whatever. On the list of my priorities this is not even near the bottom.”

Perhaps his irritability when talking about his successor stems from the pressure he is under for upcoming film ‘SPECTRE’ – his fourth outing in the role – to be a success.

He said: ”When I first started these movies I didn’t know any better – I was naive and didn’t worry about a great deal, I just got on with it.

”As they went on, the pressure built. People thought ‘Casino Royale’ would bomb, it was a massive success and they were like, ‘What are you going to do now?’ Then ‘Quantum of Solace’, OK, it was difficult and a huge amount of pressure, but then with ‘Skyfall’, again it was, ‘What are you going to do now?’ Well, we got Sam Mendes on board and it suddenly became a bit easier.

”’Skyfall’ made a billion. That’s brilliant, but then you go, ‘What the f**k is a billion dollars?’ I can’t conceive how many f***ing tickets sales that is, I could probably look it up, but I’m not going to, I’ve better things to do.”

Craig, 47, himself admits he has no idea when he’ll quit playing Bond, but after four films he’s still relishing the part.

He said: ”That’s the question isn’t it – do you leave the party early or do you stay and get p***ed on the floor? It’s a big debate and at the moment I just don’t know.”

Monica Bellucci: Being faithful is difficult

Monica Bellucci thinks it is ”difficult” to be faithful.

The ‘Spectre’ actress – who was previously married to Vincent Cassel – believes people have affairs because it isn’t easy to find a partner who has all the characteristics they are looking for.

Asked if she agreed with Daniel Craig’s view that James Bond is ”misogynistic, sexist and very lonely”, she said: ”No I don’t think so.

”I think it’s difficult to find the right woman for a man, to find a woman with all the characteristics that a man needs. The same thing for women.

”That’s why it’s so difficult to be faithful in life.”

The 51-year-old beauty enjoyed working with Daniel on the latest installment of the spy saga and found shooting sex scenes with him ”easy”.

She told the new issue of Britain’s GQ magazine: ”What I like about Daniel is that it’s so simple, he’s a great actor, he’s very beautiful.

”It was easy to do scenes that would be difficult to do with someone else, where you have to get intimate with someone you don’t know, but with him it was easy.”

Monica also revealed she was previously asked to star in a Bond movie over 20 years ago but didn’t feel ”ready” at the time.

She said: ”A long time ago I did a screen test for James Bond, more than 20 years ago, But I was not ready.

”I don’t remember the film. It was Pierce Brosnan I think – he was an amazing Bond, so sweet and so kind. Violent, but in a very nice way.”

Monica Bellucci wants to be a ‘Bond lady’

Monica Bellucci wants to be called a ‘Bond lady’.

The 50-year-old actress – who has been cast opposite Daniel Craig, 46, in the latest James Bond movie ‘Spectre’ – believes women will be thrilled the female lead has gone to an older actress but insists the youthful term ‘Bond girl’ is no longer applicable to her character.

She said: ”My first thought was, ‘How can I be a Bond girl at 50?’. After my audition, [director] Sam Mendes told me that, for the first time in history, he wanted a woman of a similar age to the actor playing Bond.

”I told Sam he would be a hero among women for casting me in Spectre. Compared to the Bond girls that have gone before me I am so much more mature, I’d prefer to be called a Bond woman, or perhaps a Bond lady.”

The raven-haired beauty – who split from actor Vincent Cassel in August 2013 after 14 years of marriage – is now rumoured to be dating businessmen Telman Ismailov and claims that all older women need to feel sexy is inner confidence.

She explained to The Mail on Sunday newspaper’s Event magazine: ”Many 50-year-old women feel invisible to men but it doesn’t have to be that way. It’s worth remembering what you project outside comes from inside.

”True sexiness is in the mind, the imagination, not in the age of the body.

”It doesn’t surprise me that men in their 20s and 30s are often looking for a much older woman.”

Pierce Brosnan backs Idris Elba to play James Bond

Pierce Brosnan has backed Idris Elba to play James Bond.

The 61-year-old actor – who played the fictional British spy in four films from 1994 to 2002 – thinks ‘The Gunman’ star would be great in the iconic role and is tipping him as a worthy successor to current 007 Daniel Craig.

When asked if he thought Elba would make a good Bond,

Brosnan said: ”Yeah, he would actually. Colin Salmon also. May the best man get the job.”

Brosnan also revealed he’s a big fan of Craig’s interpretation of the character and hopes he stays on as the star of the franchise beyond his upcoming fourth outing in ‘Spectre’.

Speaking to Radio Times magazine, he said: ”Daniel has made his mark gloriously … May Daniel bring home the bacon for as long as he wants.”

Elba has been repeatedly linked to the iconic role and has admitted he would accept the part of Bond if it was offered to him.

During a Q&A on website Reddit he was asked if he was interested in portraying the suave spy, to which he replied: ”Yes, if it was offered to me, absolutely.”

However, Elba, 42, has insisted he wouldn’t want his portrayal to be defined by the fact he would be the first ”black Bond”.

In a previous TV interview, he said: ”We don’t say ‘white Bond’ we just say ‘Bond’, so it suddenly becomes a black man and he’s a ‘black Bond’; I hate that phrase.”
