Mickey Mouse Moves In with Spider-Man

Big news was announced in the cartoon industry this week, now that Disney has acquired Marvel for 4 billion dollars.

Mickey Mouse will have to make room for Spider-Man, Iron Man and all the other super heroes. In fact, Disney added 5 000 new characters to its royal kingdom.

The head honcho of Marvel, Ike Perlmutter, will continue overseeing operations in the Marvel division. At the moment, it is unknown whether this move would impact upcoming Marvel film projects.

The transaction must be approved by Marvel shareholders, and must also conform to U.S. antitrust laws.

Kirsten Dunst Still Part of Next Spider-Man

Todd Black, a Spider-Man 4 producer, told the New York Post that the actress will be resuming her role as Mary-Jane Watson.

While reassuring worried fans of the franchise that the 27-year-old actress is on board for the superhero adventure, it was also announced that Tobey Maguire is a confirmed cast member.

The plot of the film is still unknown, but Black revealed that Peter Parker will not be marrying his teenage sweetheart.

"We’re just coming up with who the villain’s going to be now. We’ll be shooting in New York again. Trust me, people will appreciate who we pick, because it’ll be a big part of New York," said Black, while rumours have been circulating that Kraven the Hunter or Kingpin are among the top villain choices.

The opening date for Spider-Man 4 will be sometime in 2011.

Although the cast has not yet been picked, Taymor has held auditions with Across the Universe actors, Jim Sturgess and Evan Rachel Wood.

Spider-Man Musical to Hit Broadway

According to the New York Post, the musical Spider-Man, which is headed for Broadway next year, starring U2’s frontman Bono, is poised to be a smash hit. The production cost was reported at more than $40 million.

Director Julie Taymor (Across the Universe, Frida) will be responsible for bringing the project to life. Taymor already has some experience in the theatrical department, since she’s directed the Disney musical, The Lion King.

It seems that the astronomical price tag for the production is a result of the anticipated cost of costumes.

The New York newspaper made a prediction that the production budget could be reduced to $35 million, but even with this attempt, there would be no proof that the musical will be profitable.

Tobey Maguire’s “Nude” Audition

The actor auditioned for the role of Peter Parker with director Sam Raimi by showing his body in a blue unitard.

When producers were still not convinced, Maguire unzipped the top and did a fight scene shirtless, and was then cast in the lead role.

Even so, Maguire says that Hollywood’s emphasis on people looking perfect frustrates him.  He remembers when he started in the business thinking that he always wanted to appear as himself, even if he had pimples.

Spider-Man 3 opened last weekend with a bang in North America.  The film earned $148 million over the weekend, passing the record of $135.6 million by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.

Maguire and Dunst Agree To Spider-Man 4

At the premiere for the third installment of the film franchise in London, the two stars revealed that they are planning to star in the next film.

Maguire talked about the plans of the franchise producers at a press conference, saying, "They’ll definitely develop a fourth movie and write a screenplay, and I would consider it if there’s a good script, a good story that I felt was worth telling and Sam Raimi was involved and the right cast came together for it."

No More Spider-Man for Tobey Maguire

Maguire, 31, just completed working on the film Spider-Man 3.  The news comes just months after the film franchise’s female star, Kirsten Dunst, announced that she will no longer star in Spider-Man films.

Maguire explained, "To me it seems like this is a natural point for the team to break up because we have a lot of story conclusions that were going along for the main characters for the first two movies.  Maguire added, "It feels like a trilogy to me and it feels like the end."

Despite the announcements from the film’s stars, Sam Raimi, who directed the films, believes that a fourth installment may be possible.  Raimi said, "I love Spider-Man. At this moment I’m fascinated with him."

Spider-Man 3 will open in theatres in May.
