Marvel teases Stan Lee documentary streaming on Disney+ in 2023

On what would have been Stan Lee’s 100th birthday, Marvel announced that a documentary on Lee’s life would come to Disney+ in 2023.

Marvel didn’t provide much more information than that about the documentary, although it did share a 25-second teaser as well:

Lee co-created many iconic Marvel characters, including Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Black Panther, Hulk, X-Men, Thor, Silver Surfer, Ant-Man, Nick Fury, and more.

Lee started at Marvel’s predecessor, Timely Comics, in 1939. Over the next several decades, Lee went from interim editor to editor, and in the ’60s became the writer and editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics. Lee was named publisher in 1972 and eventually became the face of the company. Lee also made several appearances in Marvel film and television projects.

Lee died in November 2018 at the age of 95.

Look for the documentary, titled Stan Lee, on Disney+ next year.

Stan Lee battling pneumonia

Stan Lee has revealed he is battling pneumonia, but insists he is "getting better".

The 95-year-old comic book legend – who is the founder of Marvel Comics – was rushed to hospital at the end of last month after suffering shortness of breath and an irregular heartbeat, and he has now revealed that he’s spent the past month battling pneumonia, which is an inflammatory condition of the lungs.

In a video message recorded for his fans, Stan said: "Hiya heroes, this is Stan Lee. I haven’t been in touch with you lately, I had a little bought of pneumonia which I’m fighting, but it seems to be getting better."

Stan went on to thank his loyal supporters for always sticking by him, and insisted he would be fighting fit in no time as he misses connecting with his fans.

He continued in the video: "But I want you all to know I’m thinking of you, of course I always think of the fans, and I hope you’re all doing well. I miss you all, I miss your enthusiasm, I miss all the notes, and the photos, and the emails I used to get. I still get a lot of them. And I want you to know that I still love you all.

"I think that Marvel, and Spidey, and I had the best group of fans that any group in the world ever had, and I sure appreciate it. So let me know how you’re doing, I hope everything is going well for you. And I hope that next time we talk, I’ll be in ever better shape, maybe I’ll have some of the pneumonia knocked down and we can have some real fun over the internet. Until then, excelsior!"

The star spent the night in Cedars-Sinai hospital on January 31 as a "precaution", but it was soon revealed he was resting at home.

A spokesperson for Stan said at the time: "Stan is doing well and feeling good, he is staying there for a few days for some check ups as a safety precaution."

And Stan himself added when he left the hospital the following day: "All I really want to do is tell you that I’m feeling great."

Stan Lee rushed to hospital

Stan Lee was rushed to hospital for shortness of breath, but is now "feeling great".

The 95-year-old comic book legend – who is the founder of Marvel Comics – was taken to Cedars-Sinai hospital on Wednesday (01.31.18) after suffering shortness of breath and an irregular heartbeat, according to TMZ.

A spokesperson for the star – who famously makes a cameo appearance in every Marvel franchise movie – told the gossip site a few hours later that Stan "is doing well and feeling good, he is staying there for a few days for some check ups as a safety precaution."

However, on Thursday (02.01.18), the star himself gave a short interview with ABC 7 in which he claimed he was "feeling great" after spending just one night in the hospital, and was now back at home getting well deserved rest.

He said: "All I really want to do is tell you that I’m feeling great."

At the time of writing it is unknown what exactly caused Stan’s irregular heartbeat, but it seems the star is firmly back on his feet.

Despite being well into his 90s, Stan is showing no signs of slowing down as at the beginning of this week he was spending the night celebrating his latest creation to make it to the big screen at the ‘Black Panther’ premiere.

Whilst there, the writer beamed as he posed for photos alongside the movie’s leading star Chadwick Boseman, who will be taking on the role of T’Challa and his titular alter-ego, which was first created by Stan in 1966 alongside artist Jack Kirby.

‘Black Panther’ is due to hit cinema screens on February 16, and Stan will no doubt be making another red carpet appearance when Marvel ensemble movie ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ premieres before its May 4 release.

Carrie Fisher to be named a Disney Legend

The late Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill are to be honoured with the Disney Legends Award this year at the D23 Expo.

The two ‘Star Wars’ actors are to be recognised by the company for their roles as siblings Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia respectively in the sci-fi saga which began in 1977 and which Disney purchased the rights of from George Lucas in 2012 when he sold Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012.

The ceremony will be hosted by Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger on Friday July 14 and Iger insists Hamill and Fisher – who tragically passed away in December 2016 at the age of 60 – are more than deserving of the accolade.

He said: "The Disney Legends Award is the highest honor our company can bestow on an individual, reserved for those few who have truly made an indelible mark on the history of The Walt Disney Company. It’s a celebration of talent, a recognition of achievement, and an expression of gratitude to the men and women whose work has significantly contributed to Disney’s enduring reputation for creative excellence … We couldn’t be more excited for these amazing artists to join past Disney Legends such as Julie Andrews, Alan Menken, Robin Williams and George Lucas to name a few."

Other recipients of the honour this year include Marvel comics genius Stan Lee, Oprah Winfrey, Gary Marshall, Clyde ‘Gerry’ Geronimi, Wayne Jackson, Julie Taymor and Manuel Gonzales.

Each winner will be presented with a bronze statuette and will have their handprints immortalised in bronze for display at the company’s studio lot in Burbank, California.

Fisher will make her last appearance as Leia in the upcoming ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’, which will also see Hamill, 65, back as Jedi Knight Luke.

Benedict Cumberbatch ‘intrigued’ by the 1960s

Benedict Cumberbatch is "intrigued" by the psychedelic ’60s.

The 40-year-old actor stars as the titular character in Marvel’s upcoming ‘Doctor Strange’ movie – the comic which was conceived during a time when creator Stan Lee was obsessed with cosmology and incantations – and has said he took on the role because the "spiritualism" of that era interested him.

He said: "I was intrigued by all of this. The experimental drugs, cults, psychedelics, spiritualism. Back then, people used those ideas to explore stuff they didn’t understand. It was a form of bargaining. Now, we know a lot more."

And this isn’t the first time the ‘Sherlock’ star has delved into something a little more "hippy", as he previously spent a year teaching at a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Nepal – until he and his friends got lost in the mountains during a hiking trip.

He said: "I used to teach English to monks in the morning. We drank rainwater squeezed out of moss, we got altitude sickness, I had dysentery."

But roles such as ‘Doctor Strange’ are perfect for the star – who now has 16-month-old son Christopher with his wife Sophie Hunter – as he says he isn’t "rational at all", and is constantly trying to "understand things in the universe."

He explained: "I’m not rational at all. I hit walls trying to understand things in the universe. Things on a molecular level, or circadian rhythms. Those are fascinating, they’re hard-wired into us. Every form of life has a circadian rhythm, from a cellular fungus to a human, to regulate our body clock. I think there’s spirituality in science, there’s wonder in logic, and the world just gets bizarre the more you think about it."

‘The Imitation Game’ actor also claims doing a superhero movie wasn’t something he thought he’d ever do.

He told ShortList magazine: "It wasn’t on my bucket list. But I was into superhero comics when I was younger – I liked Tim Burton’s ‘Batman’. I had the posters on my wall. In the playground we’d listen to the Prince soundtrack and do imitations of Jack Nicholson."
