Star Trek: Picard uses Galaxy Z Flip 3 as futuristic Tricorder prop

It seems Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 3 might be a bit more futuristic than some of us expected.

The foldable handset has been spotted in Star Trek: Picard as part of a Tricorder — a Star Trek device used to scan the environment, record data and more. In episode three of season two, the Tricorder appears twice and is used by Agnes Jurati and Rafaella Musiker. You can spot the Z Flip 3’s horizontal crease and reduced bezels.

The phone is in a very thick case to make it look more like a Tricorder, and you can’t see the rear of the Z Flip 3 at all in the scene.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 or 3 (it’s unclear which one) was spotted in a previous episode being used as a ‘PADD,’ a Personal Access Display.

Star Trek: Picard is available to stream on Bell’s Crave app in Canada.

Oh god, William Shatner is getting launched into space

Canadian actor William Shatner is on the passenger list for Blue Origin’s next commercial flight into space, because of course he is.

The Verge reports that Shatner will be joining the 11-minute voyage on the aerospace company’s New Shepard rocket alongside former NASA engineer and Planet Labs co-founder Chris Boshuizen, French software executive Glen de Vries, and Blue Origin vice-president of mission and flight operations Audrey Powers.

Shatner is best known for his role as James T. Kirk, the shirt-ripping, alien-wrestling, diplomat-smooching captain of Star Trek’s USS Enterprise — and best loved by this author as James Spader’s queer platonic husband in the criminally forgotten aughts’ court drama Boston Legal.

At 90 years old, Shatner will become the oldest person to ever visit space — you know, the nonagenarian-friendly place where “astronauts lose on average 1 percent to 2 percent of their bone mineral density every month.”

The New Shepard is a suborbital rocket system and Blue Origin’s entry into the complicated new frontier of space tourism.

Blue Origin’s CEO, noted soft-serve ice cream enthusiast Jeff Bezos, was among the passengers on New Shepard’s first tourist flight in July.

While the Canadian Space Agency’s website assures me a short-duration flight poses little risk to Shatner’s bones, I would kindly ask that no one contact me at 9:30am ET/6:30am PT on Tuesday, October 12th when live launch coverage is scheduled to begin, as I — alongside my father, who remembers sitting down to watch black-and-white ST:TOS episodes every week as a kid — will be busy.

Leonard Nimoy laid to rest

Leonard Nimoy has been laid to rest.

The 83-year-old actor, who is best known for playing the character Spock in the ‘Star Trek’ TV series and films for more 40 years, passed away at his home in Bel Air, Los Angeles on Friday (02.27.15) and his funeral took place yesterday (03.01.15).

The actor – who died of end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease – was laid to rest during a traditional Jewish ceremony in a private service attended by just close friends and family, including wife Susan, children Adam and Julie and his stepson Aaron Bay Schuck.

The service took place close to Leonard’s home, but his representative refused to confirm reports it was held at the Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary.

Leonard’s friend and co-star William Shatner sparked a Twitter backlash after announcing he would be unable to attend the service due to charity commitments in Florida.

He tweeted on Saturday (02.28.15): ”I am currently in FL as I agreed to appear at the Red Cross Ball tonight. Leonard’s funeral is tomorrow. I can’t make it back in time.

”I feel really awful. Here I am doing charity work and one of my dearest friends is being buried.

”I chose to honor a commitment I made months ago to appear at a charitable fundraiser. A lot of money was raised. So here I am; tell me off.(sic)”

He was then deluged with angry comments from fans, but responded to them to say: ”One of the other misconceptions seems to be that folks think flights to LAX occur all night long.

”Walking out on a major fundraiser wouldn’t have you calling me a jerk for leaving a charity high & dry? Hmm?”

In an attempt to make amends, the 83-year-old actor – whose daughters Melanie and Lisabeth attended the funeral – staged a Twitter Q and A about his memories of his pal yesterday instead.

Leonard Nimoy Gets Emotional

Nimoy, who played Dr. Spock for decades, told TV Guide how filming the latest movie was difficult for him.

The 78-year-old actor said that scenes filmed under director J.J. Abrams constantly reminded him of his former co-star companions from the series and the good memories attached.

Nimoy admitted being touched watching Karl Urban, who played the character Dr. McCoy, and who made him think of his good friend DeForest Kelley, who died in 1999. "I started crying – and it still moves me now. I loved D-Kelley, salt of the earth. I cried a lot watching this production," the actor confessed.

Star Trek Purists Advised to Stay Home

The director of the new Star Trek, J.J. Abrams, advised purists of the franchise not to waste their time.

Abrams heard that the film was bashed with strong criticism about William Shatner not playing the role of Captain Kirk.

"For them I say, ‘Don’t see the movie. You’ll just get angry. It is not Shatner playing Kirk, so I do apologize," said the director.

Actor Chris Pine, who plays the new Captain Kirk, did not want to watch the shows starring Shatner, in fear that he would end up mimicking him. Pine explained, "I know how I work and by watching a lot of Mr. Shatner’s performances as Captain Kirk I knew by osmosis I would get on set and try and impersonate Mr Shatner." He added, "It was not my job. I didn’t want people to start paying attention to whether I was doing a perfect William Shatner."
