Respawn is making two other Star Wars games on top of Jedi: Fallen Order sequel

Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has confirmed that it’s working on three Star Wars games.

This is a bit of a surprise, as the EA-owned studio was previously only expected to be working on a sequel to its acclaimed 2019 action-adventure game, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

In a press release, Respawn confirmed that one of the three games is indeed a follow-up to Fallen Order, although a specific title or other details weren’t provided. All that the company said is that Stig Asmussen, the director of Fallen Order, is returning to helm the series’ next entry.

Meanwhile, the other two games, also untitled, tackle the strategy and first-person shooter genres, respectively.

Peter Hirschmann, who has overseen the production of such Star Wars games as Lego Star Wars and The Force Unleashed, will lead development on the first-person shooter (FPS). It’s worth noting that he also has a background with the Medal of Honor FPS series, while Respawn’s lineage in general — from modern games like Titanfall and Apex Legends to the original Modern Warfare series — is also in FPS.

The strategy game, on the other hand, is being primarily developed by Bit Reactor, a Maryland-based studio formed by various XCOM and Civilization veterans, although Respawn will provide assistance.

It’s likely that the strategy and FPS titles are quite a ways off. On Twitter, Respawn said its team has “begun production” on the FPS, while the formation of Bit Reactor was only officially announced last week. However, the new Jedi game might be fairly close. VentureBeat reporter Jeff Grubb, a credible insider source in the gaming industry, said earlier this month that he expects fans will hear about the second Star Wars Jedi game “in a significant way” before June. He added that there’s a “chance” it could release this year, but it may also slip into 2023.

These three titles help extend EA’s time with the Star Wars brand. Since 2013, the publisher has had the exclusive rights to publish Star Wars games, but these are expiring in 2023. With that, Lucasfilm has already been partnering with other companies on Star Wars games, including an open-world title from Ubisoft, a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic from Aspyr and, controversiallyStar Wars Eclipse from Quantic Dream.

Canada’s own Hayden Christensen to return as Anakin in Disney+’s Ahsoka: report

Vancouver-born actor Hayden Christensen is returning to the world of Star Wars in the upcoming Disney+ series Ahsoka, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

This is set to be the second time Christensen will reprise his Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader role after the prequel films, following next year’s Ewan McGregor-led Obi-Wan series.

Ahsoka is one of multiple The Mandalorian spin-offs and features Rosario Dawson reprising her role as fan-favourite character Ahsoka Tano. The alien Jedi originated The Clone Wars animated film and series as Anakin’s apprentice, making his appearance in her solo show logical. However, like The Mandalorian, Ahsoka is set after the events of Return of the Jedi, in which Vader dies.

Therefore, it’s unclear exactly how Christensen will appear, although it’s safe to assume it will be as a Force Ghost, a figment of Ahsoka’s imagination and/or flashback. (Then again, Lucasfilm bafflingly brought back Emperor Palpatine in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker despite him getting vaporized in Return of the Jedi, so who knows?)

Beyond that, plot details are currently under wraps for Ahsoka, although The Mandalorian revealed that she was searching for classic Star Wars villain Thrawn. This would, presumably, pick up story threads from the animated series Star Wars Rebels, in which Ahsoka and Thrawn both appeared.

A release date for Ahsoka has yet to be revealed, although THR notes that it’s expected to begin production early next year. It’s possible we’ll learn more about the series at the Disney+ Day on November 12th. The event will offer a slew of announcements related to upcoming Disney+ programming from all of Disney’s brands, including Star Wars.

Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen are reprising their roles of Fett and Shand, respectively. Key members of The Mandalorian‘s creative team, including Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni and Robert Rodriguez, are also working on The Book of Boba Fett.

It’s a big time for Disney+, as the streaming service is set to celebrate its second anniversary on November 12th.

George Lucas supports J.J.Abrams at Star Wars premiere

J.J. Abrams and George Lucas walked the red carpet together at the world premiere of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ on Monday night (14.12.15).

The movie’s director was given the seal of approval from the 71-year-old Hollywood legend – who created the sci-fi franchise and directed and produced the first six ‘Star Wars’ films before selling Lucasfilm to The Walt Disney Company in 2012 – when they attended he highly anticipated event at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles.

Abrams – who revealed he was overwhelmed at the ”surreal” hype surrounding the movie – was given a big thumbs up from Lucas, as he placed a supportive arm around the acclaimed director.

Speaking about why the franchise has become such a huge part of popular culture since the first movie came out in 1977, Lucas told reporters on the red carpet: ”I didn’t think it would be this big when it started. It’s a film about families and what one generation leaves behind another generation has to deal with.

”I started off wanting to do a film for young people who were going through adolescence, with mythological themes and spiritual themes. ”That is what resonated with people.”

Lucas, 71, talking about how the cycle of life influences the sci-fi saga, he added: ”It’s about what one generation leaves behind and the next generation has to deal with.”

The premiere was also attended by the cast of ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ with stars such as Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Max von Sydow Gwendolyn Christie and Harrison Ford – who was accompanied by his wife Calista Flockhart – all in attendance.

The movie opens in cinemas worldwide on Friday (18.12.15).

J.J. Abrams worried Star Wars: The Force Awakens would be a disaster

J.J. Abrams worried ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ would be a ”f***ing disaster”.

The 49-year-old filmmaker has opened up about the pressure of directing the highly anticipated next film in the franchise, ‘Episode VII’, and confessed he was terrified members of the new cast wouldn’t work well with the actors from the original trilogy, who include Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill.

He said: ”When we met Daisy Ridley, when we found John Boyega, and then Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver came aboard, we got really excited. And yes, Daisy and John could work together, but what happens when Harrison’s in the mix? What will that feel like? If it doesn’t spark, it’s a f***ing disaster.”

The ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ director wasn’t just worried about the human characters getting on, however, as he admitted he wasn’t sure new robot BB-8 would gel with the much-loved droids C-3PO and R2-D2 from the previous films.

He told Wired magazine: ”Yes, BB-8 is a great character, amazingly puppeteered, but what will happen when he’s suddenly in a scene with C-3PO or R2-D2? Will it feel bizarre? Will it feel wrong? Somehow it didn’t. When Anthony Daniels [C-3PO] told me, ‘Oh my God, I love BB-8!’ I said, ‘We’re going to be OK’. Because if he’s OK, it’s working.”

And Abrams was thrilled when he realised that everything he’d worked so hard to put together was going to come across on-screen.

He added: ”It was really exciting to say, ‘These scenes are working!’ We worked really hard to cast and to write and to put it all together, but you just don’t know until you start shooting. Then all of a sudden, you’re on-set watching it and you know. It’s a little bit like having a party and having friends from your new school meet friends from your old school, and you think, ‘What’s going to happen?’ And all of a sudden they’re getting along famously and this party’s really fun! It was a lot of work, but it ended up being great.”
