Cowboys may have revealed 2023 NFL Draft plans

What exactly is Dallas going to be doing in the 2023 NFL Draft that begins later this week? Fans may have just gotten a glimpse into their plans.

According to team CEO Stephen Jones during an interview on 105.3 The Fan, while Jake Ferguson and Peyton Hendershot played well, the team may be looking to add to the tight end position.

“We feel like we are going to be able to take care of situations that will ultimately get done throughout the draft,” said Jones. “Obviously you lose Dalton Schultz, you know, we drafted Ferguson last year and ended up with great value in Hendershot. You know, we feel good about that position. But certainly, you know, you’d like to think the draft’s heavy there through quite a few players in those top three of four rounds that we think can be a ‘Ferguson’ or ‘Hendershot’ and come in and really help us.”

The Cowboys will be selecting 26th and 58th overall to begin the festivities, which kick off from Kansas City, Missouri later in the week.

Cowboys have requirement for Michael Gallup in 2023

Even though the Dallas Cowboys made the call to bring aboard wide receiver Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans to pair along with CeeDee Lamb as weapons for quarterback Dak Prescott, they still have big plans for Michael Gallup in 2023.

Gallup, whom the Cowboys selected in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft, tore his ACL and appeared in only nine games during the 2021 season. Last year, he was limited to just 39 passes for 424 yards and four touchdowns.

However, according to The Dallas Morning News, head coach Mike McCarthy has told Gallup that he’ll be more heavily featured in the offensive attack this season.

“I think Michael Gallup has a great chance to take the next step,” team executive vice president Stephen Jones said during the NFL Scouting Combine in February. “Know what he can do. Coming off a major ACL, I think it’s pretty typical, you know, that guys improve, [and] from the first year to the second year is usually the jump. And I fully expect Michael to do that, and then I think we’ve got a good competitive group after that. Can we look at maybe improving it? Absolutely.”

Gallup racked up 424 receiving yards along with four touchdowns on 39 catches during the 2022 NFL season. He’s averaged a total of 53 receptions for 819 yards and four touchdowns in his four seasons.

What kind of season are you expecting from Gallup for the Cowboys in 2023?

Cowboys talk about “insulting” Ezekiel Elliott

The Dallas Cowboys decided to part ways with 2016 1st round draft pick Ezekiel Elliott earlier this month after the popular running back posted career low numbers in 2022 of only 876 yards and 12 total touchdowns. Meanwhile, the move was made easier after Tony Pollard emerged as the team’s top player at the position with 1,007 yards total, nine touchdowns and a Pro Bowl recognition.

Why was it that the Cowboys elected not to offer Elliott a pay cut? They felt it would come off as disrespectful towards a popular player who had accomplished plenty of things during his time with the franchise.

“The last thing we want to do is do anything that would be insulting to a player, to a great player, like Zeke, who was one of the best players to ever put on a Cowboys uniform,” Cowboys CEO Stephen Jones said. “There are sensitivities when you get into making offers.”

“Sometimes the best thing is to let them get a feel for what the market is,” Jones said, comparing Elliott’s release to the past releases of figures like Emmitt Smith and DeMarcus Ware. “When you’re talking about great players — and that’s what makes them great: They think a lot, not in a selfish way, but they perceive themselves as a great player and they are. It just becomes how do you make the business work. It always boils down to that unfortunately.

“I think for the most part we’ve worked through these tough situations in a good way and hopefully we’re doing it in spades with Zeke because there’s nothing but love and respect for Zeke Elliott.”

But as head coach Mike McCarthy implied earlier in the week, Jones also stated that there appeared to be a chance that Elliott could somehow make his way back to the team at some point.

“Wish him nothing but the best if it turns out he didn’t return,” Jones said. “But we never rule anything out around here.”
