Stranger Things is getting its own animated Netflix series

The Duffer Brothers have announced a new, untitled animated series tied to Stranger Things that’s set to premiere on Netflix sometime in the future.

“We’ve always dreamed of an animated Stranger Things in the vein of the Saturday morning cartoons that we grew up loving, and to see this dream realized has been absolutely thrilling,” said The Duffer Brothers in a statement.

Stranger Things was first released in July of 2016 and has since spawned a cult-like following, making it one of the most popular shows in Netflix history. The fourth season of the show is still the most-watched Netflix English-based language series in its first 28 days on the platform, with 1.35 billion hours viewed.

The Duffer Brothers will be executive producers on the new project with their Upside Down Pictures production banner. They will be working alongside Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen via 21 Laps and Eric Robles via Flying Bark Productions, a collaboration that brings some exciting prospects to the upcoming animated series.

“We couldn’t be more blown away by what Eric Robles and his team have come up with,” The Duffer Brothers said. “The scripts and artwork are incredible, and we can’t wait to share more with you!”

With filming for Stranger Things Season 5 set to take play in the summer of 2023, it’s unclear when the animated series will release. Until then, fans of the series have more than enough to look forward to.

Stranger Things 4 is the second Netflix show to hit 1 billion hours viewed

Stranger Things 4 has been a massive hit, as it’s become the second on Netflix’s most viewed hours list behind Squid Game, since its release on May 27th.

Netflix announced that Stranger Things 4 has amassed 1.15 billion hours viewed, the second-most of any single season of one of its shows. As for this past weekend, when the last two episodes of the season were released, those reached 301 million hours in views. This put them in Netflix’s Top 10 in 93 different countries, including Canada.

As for the English TV list, Stranger Things sits at the top, although it still has yet to pass Squid Game‘s 1.65 billion mark. Bear in mind that the last two episodes of Stranger Things 4 were just released on July 1st, so there is still a lot of potential for it to catch up to Squid Game.

After all, the last two episodes combined are over two hours long, with Episode Nine having a duration of two hours and 20 minutes.

The series’ fifth season, which currently doesn’t have a release date, will also be its last.

Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown to star in Netflix sci-fi movie from Avengers directors

Directing duo Anthony and Joe Russo have lined up their next project: a Netflix sci-fi film called Electric State starring Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown.

Netflix announced the news on Twitter alongside a brief synopsis:

Set in a retro-futuristic past, it follows an orphaned teen (Brown) as she traverses the American West with a robot and an eccentric drifter in search of her younger brother.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt is also in talks to join the film. While Electric State would be the first collaboration between Brown and the Russos, the brothers did, of course, work with Pratt on Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who wrote the Russos’ four Marvel films, including Infinity War and Endgame, are penning the Electric State screenplay, based on a 2018 illustrated novel by Simon Stalenhag. Notably, Electric State will have an Avengers-level budget that’s “north of” $200 million USD (about $257 million CAD), according to The Hollywood Reporter. This would make it one of Netflix’s most expensive films ever. Filming is expected to begin in October.

Following their tenure at Marvel, the Russos have formed a close relationship with Netflix. Joe Russo co-wrote Extraction and the upcoming Extraction 2, starring Chris Hemsworth, while both Russos produced the action films. The Russos also directed The Gray Man, an action-thriller that stars Canada’s Ryan Gosling and reteams the brothers with Captain America star Chris Evans and Markus and McFeely.

While Extraction 2 doesn’t yet have a premiere date, The Gray Man is set to hit Netflix on July 22nd.
