Bosch: Legacy [Amazon Original]

Picking up after Amazon’s Bosch police procedural series, Bosch has retired from the LAPD and now works as an investigator for Chandler.

The spin-off was developed by Bosch executive producer Eric Overmyer and author Michael Connelly and once again stars Titus Welliver as Bosch, Madison Lintz as Maddie and Mimi Rogers as Chandler.

The Unsolved Murder of Beverly Lynn Smith [Amazon Original]

The first in a recently unveiled slate of Canadian Prime Video content, this true crime doc from Welland, Ontario filmmaker Nathalie Bibeau (The Walrus and the Whistleblower) explores the unsolved 1974 murder of a 22-year-old woman in Oshawa, Ontario.

The Wilds was created by Sarah Streicher (Marvel’s Daredevil) and stars an ensemble cast that includes Sophia Ali (Grey’s Anatomy), Shannon Berry (Hunters), Fort Erie, Ontario’s Jenna Clause (Cold Brook) and Sarah Pidgeon (Gotham).

A novelist is accused of killing his wife, who was found dead at the bottom of the staircase in their home.

Based on Jean-Xavier de Lestrade’s 2004 true crime docuseries of the same name, The Staircase was created by Antonio Campos (The Devil All the Time) and stars Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), Toni Collette (Hereditary), Michael Stuhlbarg (Call Me By Your Name), Dane DeHaan (Lisey’s Story), Olivia DeJonge (The Society) and Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones).

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

This Star Trek Discovery spin-off follows Captain Christopher Pike and the U.S.S. Enterprise crew as they explore new worlds in the decade prior to the original Star Trek series.

Strange New Worlds was created by Star Trek Discovery‘s Akiva Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman and Jenny Lumet and stars Anson Mount as Pike, Ethan Peck as Spock, and Rebecca Romijn as Number One, all reprising their roles from Discovery. It’s worth noting that Vancouver-raised Adrian Holmes (Bel-Air) appears in the recurring role of the first Enterprise captain Robert April and Montreal’s Dan Jeannotte as James T. Kirk’s brother Sam. Additionally, Strange New Worlds was filmed in Mississauga, Ontario.

The series has already been renewed for a second season.

A spin-off of Toronto-born Mike Myers’ film So I Married an Axe Murderer, The Pentaverate was created by Myers and stars Myers as the journalist and several other characters, Ken Jeong (Community), Keegan-Michael Key (Key & Peele) and Debi Mazar (Entourage).

X was written and directed by Ti West (In a Valley of Violence) and stars Mia Goth (Suspiria), Jenna Ortega (You), Martin Henderson (Grey’s Anatomy), Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfect series) and “Day ‘n’ Nite” rapper Kid Cudi (credited as Scott Mescudi).

It’s worth noting that Goth stars as both pornographic actress Maxine and elderly woman Pearl, the latter of whom she’s playing once again in an upcoming prequel film.

Apple TV+ has an exclusive agreement with MLB to stream two exclusive baseball games on Friday nights during the new season.

This begins on April 8th with the New York Mets vs. the Washington Nationals at 7pm ET and the Houston Astros vs. the Los Angeles Angels at 9:30pm ET. On top of live games like these, Apple TV+ will offer 24/7 livestreams with replays, news and analysis, highlights, classic games and more.

The initial schedule can be found here. Note that the only Toronto Blue Jays game there is May 27th at 9:30pm ET against the Angels.

These MLB games will be free through the Apple TV app for a limited time before an Apple TV+ subscription is required, although a specific date for that shift has not yet been confirmed.

Pinecone and Pony [Apple Original]

Based on Toronto writer Kate Beaton’s The Princess and the Pony, Pinecone & Pony follows a young girl named Pinecone who teams up with her friend Pony to learn how to become a warrior.

It’s worth noting that Toronto-based First Generation Films worked on the series alongside Dreamworks Animation.

Better Call Saul was created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould (Breaking Bad) and stars Bob Odenkirk, Giancarlo Esposito and Jonathan Banks reprising their roles from Breaking Bad, as well as Rhea Seehorn (Whitney), Patrick Fabian (Special) and Montreal’s own Michael Mando (the Ubisoft Montreal video game Far Cry 3).

It’s worth noting that the fifth season has been added to Netflix right before Better Call Saul‘s final season, which premieres on April 18th.

While the catalogue of the Canadian version of Paramount+ is missing many of the titles found on its American counterpart, one high-profile original has debuted on both: Halo.

That’s right — after years of development hell, the live-action TV series adaptation of Microsoft’s massively popular video game franchise is finally here.

Inspired but not directly adapted from the games, Halo follows the 26th-century war between United Nations Space Command and an alliance of advanced alien races known as the Covenant.

Halo stars B.C.’s own Pablo Schreiber (The Wire), Shabana Azmi (Khandar), Olive Gray (Half-Moon Investigations), Natasha McElhone (Californication) and Jen Taylor reprising her role as the voice of Cortana from the Halo games.

Netflix’s former Marvel shows, including Daredevil

As you’ve probably heard, all of Netflix’s original Marvel series have been removed from the service as the rights return to Marvel. What that means is that they’re now, as of March 16th, all streaming on Disney+. For reference, this includes:

Marvel’s Daredevil (three seasons)
Marvel’s Jessica Jones (three seasons)
Marvel’s Luke Cage (two seasons)
Marvel’s Iron Fist (two seasons)
Marvel’s The Defenders (one season)
Marvel’s The Punisher (two seasons)

So far, Daredevil has had ties to Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye, on top of rumours of a Disney+ reboot, so that might be one you’d especially want to watch. (It’s also, by far, the best of the bunch.)

Nightmare Alley

An ambitious carnival worker with a shady past takes massive risks to advance his career.

Based on William Lindsay Gresham’s 1946 novel of the same name, Nightmare Alley was co-written and directed by Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water) and stars Bradley Cooper (A Star is Born), Cate Blanchett (Carol), Rooney Mara (Carol), Toni Collette (Hereditary) and Willem Dafoe (Eternity’s Gate).

It’s worth noting that the film was primarily shot in and around Toronto.

Turning Red [Disney+ Original]

Thirteen-year-old Chinese-Canadian Mei (Clique Wars‘ Rosalie Chiang) finds herself transforming into a red panda whenever she gets too excited or stressed while dealing with her overbearing mother and planning to attend a concert with friends.

Turning Red is notable for quite a few reasons. To start, it’s Pixar’s first Asian-led feature film and the studio’s first to be directed by a woman on her own, Toronto’s own Domee Shi. (2012’s Brave was co-directed by Mark Andrews and Brenda Chapman). For Turning Red, Shi — who won an Oscar for her animated short Bao — draws inspiration from her own life and sets the film in Toronto in 2002.

What’s more, Ottawa’s own Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) voices Mei’s mother and Mississauga’s Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever) voices Mei’s friend Priya.

The Adam Project [Netflix Original]

A time-travelling fighter pilot teams up with his 12-year-old self to save the future.

The Adam Project was directed by Montreal’s own Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum Guy) and stars Vancouver’s own Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool), newcomer Walker Scobell, Jennifer Garner (Alias), Zoe Saldaña (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Mark Ruffalo (The Kids Are Alright). The movie was shot in Vancouver.

This is Levy and Reynolds’ second film together, following last year’s hit Free Guy for Fox.

The Flash (Season 8)

Following last year’s five-part “Armageddon” crossover event, The Flash‘s eighth season resumes this week, which sees Barry working with Nora and Bart to fix the timeline.

Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, The Flash stars Grant Gustin (Glee), Candice Patton (The Young and the Restless), Danielle Panabaker (Shark) and Jesse L. Martin (Law & Order). It’s worth noting that Calgary’s Jessica Parker Kennedy (Black Sails) recurs as Nora, while the series as a whole is filmed in Vancouver.

Diabolical explores different superhuman stories in the world of The Boys through a variety of animation styles.

Reprising their roles from The Boys are Antony Starr (Homelander), Chace Crawford (The Deep), Elisabeth Shue (Madelyn Stillwell) and Giancarlo Esposito (Stan Edgar), while guest voices include Awkwafina (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), Vancouver’s own Seth Rogen (Superbad; also executive producer of The Boys), Ben Schwartz (Parks & Recreation), Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Brampton, Ontario’s Michael Cera (Arrested Development).

Notably, some of the episodes were conceived by Rogen, Awkwafina, Samberg and other creators. Meanwhile, the third season of The Boys premieres on June 3rd.

It’s worth noting that the movie was filmed around B.C.
