Ten Canadian comedians compete to make each other laugh while trying not to laugh themselves. The comedian who manages to keep a straight face wins $100,000 for their chosen charity.

Midge lands a gig with full creative freedom, but a rift is soon created between her and her loved ones.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was created by Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls) and stars Rachel Brosnahan (House of Cards), Alex Borstein (Family Guy), Michael Zegen (Rescue Me) and Tony Shalhoub (Monk).

In an effort to create a better work-life balance for employees, a company uses a “severance” program to separate one’s work memories from their personal life memories.

Severance was created by Dan Erickson (Lip Sync Battle) and stars Adam Scott (Parks and Recreation), Britt Lower (Unforgettable), John Turturro (The Big Lebowski), Christopher Walken (Catch Me If You Can) and Patricia Arquette (Boyhood).

The Cuphead Show! [Netflix Original]

The impulsive Cuphead brings his brother Mugman on all kinds of misadventures.

Based on Canadian developer Studio MDHR’s hit Cuphead video game, The Cuphead Show! was developed by Dave Wasson (Mickey Mouse) and features the voices of Tru Valentino (The Rookie), Frank Todaro (Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy), Grey DeLisle (Avatar: The Last Airbender) and Wayne Brady (Whose Line Is It Anyway?).

This follow-up to Wu Assassins sees Kai and friends travel to Bangkok on a revenge mission, only to get caught up in a larger fight to save the world.

Fistful of Vengeance was directed by Roel Reiné (Wu Assassins) and features returning Wu Assassins stars Iko Uwais (Kai Jin), Lewis Tan (Lu Xin Lee), Lawrence Kao (Tommy Wah) and JuJu Chan (Zan Hui).

Halo TV series to begin streaming on Paramount+ Canada on March 24

The long-awaited Halo TV series will premiere in Canada exclusively on Paramount+ on March 24th, Paramount has confirmed.

This is the same date that the show drops on Paramount+ in the U.S. For some time, it was unclear whether the series would come to Paramount+ in Canada, given that the service has a far thinner catalogue than its U.S. counterpart.

It’s been a long time coming for the show, which has been in development hell for several years. Amblin Entertainment, Steven Spielberg’s production company, is co-producing the series, with Xbox-owned Halo developer 343 Industries consulting.

The series isn’t intended to be canon or a direct adaptation of the iconic sci-fi shooter games, 343 has said.

Halo stars Ymir, B.C.’s Pablo Schreiber as Master Chief, Natasha McElhone as Dr. Catharine Halsey, Charlie Murphy as Makee, Shabana Azmi as Admiral Margaret Parangosky, Bokeem Woodbine as Soren-066 and Jennifer Taylor as the voice of Cortana (reprising her role from the games).

In related news, Paramount has revealed that the show has already been renewed for a second season.

Marvel shows like Daredevil are leaving Netflix Canada on March 1

Marvel’s lineup of Netflix Original series, including Marvel’s Daredevil and Marvel’s Jessica Jones, is set to leave the streaming service’s catalogue on March 1st.

As first spotted by the #SaveDaredevil Twitter account, a new message confirming the March 1st date now plays on Netflix when you first launch an episode of one of the Marvel shows. MobileSyrup has confirmed that the same message appears on our Netflix Canada account:

For context, this applies to the following shows:

  • Marvel’s Daredevil (three seasons)
  • Marvel’s Jessica Jones (three seasons)
  • Marvel’s Luke Cage (two seasons)
  • Marvel’s Iron Fist (two seasons)
  • Marvel’s The Defenders (one season)
  • Marvel’s The Punisher (two seasons)

First launched in 2015 with Daredevil, Netflix’s suite of Marvel programming featured its “shared universe” that introduced Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist in their own series before they teamed up in The Defenders. The Punisher, meanwhile, was a spin-off of Daredevil. The shows were generally praised for offering a darker, more mature spin on the Marvel universe compared to the more family-friendly films.

So what does this all mean?

*Spoilers below for Spider-Man: No Way Home and Hawkeye*

It seems as though the series have been pulled due to rights issues, given that they were originally produced for Netflix by Disney-owned Marvel Television and ABC Studios. The shows were all cancelled years ago as Disney began to pull its content from Netflix to make them available on its own streaming service, which would eventually become Disney+. There was also a period where Marvel legally couldn’t use the characters again following the shows’ cancellations, but that has since passed.

There’s a slight snag with all of this, however. Daredevil, in particular, has seen a massive bump in viewership as of late, due to the fact that star Charlie Cox reprised his role as lawyer Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home. At the same time, Vincent D’Onofrio, who played the Kingpin on Daredevil, reprised the villainous role in multiple episodes of Hawkeye on Disney+.

While both Cox and D’Onofrio have played coy about whether they’ll return in future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects, it seems safe to assume that more appearances are in the cards, given their popularity. It also remains to be seen whether Marvel has plans for other standout characters from the Netflix shows, such as Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones or Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher. In any case, new audiences will no doubt continue to come to the Marvel Netflix shows as they anticipate future appearances from these characters, so hopefully, they’re made available elsewhere after March 1st.

For now, though, it seems logical that Daredevil and the other shows would eventually make their way to Hulu in the U.S. and Disney+ Canada under the Star banner. Given their mature content, Disney would undoubtedly want to make them available on a platform that skews towards adult programming.

Futurama revival coming to Disney+ Canada in 2023

Following yesterday’s announcement that Futurama is being revived for the U.S. streaming service Hulu, Disney has confirmed that the series is coming to Disney+ Canada as well.

Production will begin later this month ahead of a premiere sometime in 2023. Original creators Matt Groening and David X. Cohen will return alongside many of the cast, including Billy West (Fry), Katey Sagal (Leela), Tress MacNeille (Mom), Maurice LaMarche (Kif), Lauren Tom (Amy), Phil LaMarr (Hermes) and David Herman (Scruffy).

However, John DiMaggio, the voice of Bender and other characters, has not yet signed on. Per Deadline, DiMaggio wanted a deal similar to West and Sagal, but has not been given that. Therefore, his roles are currently being recast, although Deadline notes the producers have a desire for him to return. DiMaggio, for his part, has been sharing fan support on Twitter while issuing his own statement:

“Thanks for the concern and the props, everyone. I really appreciate it. Don’t worry, I’ll keep you posted, but until then… CHEESE IT! #bendergate,” tweeted DiMaggio.

Futurama originally ran from March 1999 to August 2003 on Fox before being cancelled. Comedy Central later picked up the series, and it aired on its network from 2008 to 2013. All 140 episodes of the series are currently streaming on Disney+ Canada.

Where to stream the 2022 Oscars Best Picture nominees in Canada

On February 8th, the full list of nominations for the 94th Academy Awards was unveiled.

Notably, while there were only eight Best Picture nominees in 2021, this year’s ceremony has ten:

  • Belfast (directed by Kenneth Branagh)
  • CODA (directed by Sian Heder)
  • Don’t Look Up (directed by Adam McKay)
  • Drive My Car (directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi)
  • Dune (directed by Quebec’s own Denis Villeneuve)
  • King Richard (directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green)
  • Licorice Pizza (directed by Paul Thomas Anderson)
  • Nightmare Alley (directed by Guillermo Del Toro)
  • The Power of the Dog (directed by Jane Campion)
  • West Side Story (directed by Steven Spielberg)

Evidently, then, there’s a bunch to catch up on, but that’s not always easy, especially in Canada where theatrical distribution and streaming licensing agreements are convoluted. Some of these movies also only just opened in theatres, making them unavailable for streaming initially.

With that in mind, we’ve rounded up where you can stream the ten Best Picture nominees. It’s important to note that not all of these films are yet available for streaming in Canada, so we’ll update this story accordingly leading up to Oscar night on March 27th.

Belfast

Synopsis: A semi-autobiographical take on writer-director-producer Kenneth Branagh’s childhood in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1969.

Genre: Coming-of-age comedy-drama

Where to stream: Currently, the film is only available to purchase for $19.99 to $24.99 CAD on premium video on demand (PVOD) platforms like iTunes and Google Play.

CODA

Synopsis: A CODA (child of deaf adults) struggles to balance her dreams of becoming a singer while taking care of her family. Notably, outside of star Emilia Jones (who plays main character Rubi), the mother, father and brother characters are all played by actual deaf actors: Marlee Matlin, Troy Kotsur (who’s also up for Best Actor in a Supporting Role) and Daniel Durant, respectively.

Genre: Coming-of-age comedy-drama

Where to stream: Since this is an Apple Original (and the first to be nominated for Best Picture), you can watch it on Apple TV+.

Don’t Look Up

Synopsis: Two astronomers (Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence) attempt to warn humanity about an approaching comet that will wipe out humanity.

Genre: Apocalyptic dark comedy

Where to stream: Don’t Look Up is streaming exclusively on Netflix.

Drive My Car

Synopsis: The first Japanese film to earn a Best Picture nod follows a man (Hidetoshi Nishijima) who copes with the death of his wife (Reika Kirishima) while directing a multi-lingual production in Hiroshima.

Genre: Drama

Where to stream: This film is only just beginning to open in select Canadian theatres starting February 12th, so it’s unclear when and where it will hit streaming.

Dune

Synopsis: The first in a two-part adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel, Dune tells the story of Paul Atreides and his noble house as they’re thrust into a war on a deadly and inhospitable planet.

Genre: Sci-fi

This is the same day the film begins streaming in the U.S. on Disney+ and HBO Max.

The news comes one day after the musical romantic drama was nominated for seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film is the second feature-length adaptation of the 1957 stage musical of the same name. West Side Story tells the story of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City.

The film stars Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler, Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez as Bernardo, Mike Faist and Rita Moreno.

It’s worth noting that Disney hasn’t yet confirmed if and when Guillermo Del Toro’s Toronto-shot Nightmare Alley — its second Fox-produced film up for Best Picture — is coming to Disney+ Canada. The neo-noir psychological thriller hit Hulu and HBO Max in the U.S. on January 31st.

‘The Kardashians’ comes to Disney+ Canada on April 14

Disney has confirmed that The Kardashians will premiere exclusively on Disney+ Canada on April 14th.

This is the same day the reality series hits Hulu in the U.S. The premiere date was announced in a short dramatic teaser featuring the Kardashian-Jenner family:

As the title suggests, The Kardashians focuses on the personal and professional lives of the Kardashian-Jenner family, following the June 2021 series finale of Keeping Up With the Kardashians. Below is Disney’s official logline for the new series:
