Rise in streaming services and the death of TV: Here’s what 2022 might bring in tech and telecom

A new year means new trends.

In the fast-moving world of technology, almost anything is possible. In an effort to gauge what the year has ahead, consulting company Deloitte put together a list of the things that are most likely to change in the technology and telecommunications sectors.

Streaming services

In an article gauging the future of streaming services, the company predicts at least 150 million subscriptions will be cancelled across the world this year.

A competitive market and rising costs are two possible answers to this.

But it’s not all bad news.

The authors believe more subscriptions will be added than cancelled. Those leaving a streaming service may eventually resubscribe, a sign of a “competitive and maturing” market.

With so much competition, companies spend big to retain customers. Billions are spent to get the best programming to keep customers on board. The article notes this may not be sustainable and other methods should be explored.

In the U.S. for example, incentives such as cheaper packages are being offered, a want for most customers. The article notes companies need to keep their customers in mind if they want to succeed.

The death of TV

Keeping in line with the rise of streaming services, the use of traditional TV services will take a dramatic dip in the U.K. this year.

The company predicts this is the last year TV from broadcasters, whether live or on-demand, will make up more than 50 percent of all viewing. The authors say the trend in the U.K. will be similar to many other markets.

“For TV to thrive going forward, the industry should regroup to face the new reality that it will be, not the dominant form of home video entertainment, but only one of many strong contenders for viewers’ attention,” the authors write.

Wireless catches up to wired broadband

Deloitte predicts fixed wireless access (FWA) connections will grow to 88 million globally this year. This is an increase from 60 million reported in 2020. FWA uses radio waves to deliver wireless internet services.

This will mark the first time wireless services are competitive with wired services, and the arrival of 5G helps with this. The next-generation cellular network will help through greater availability of spectrum and improved network infrastructure.

Canadian streaming round-up — Amazon Prime Video, Crave, Disney+, Netflix and PVOD [2021 Edition]

Every week, we break down some of the most notable new shows and movies to hit Canadian streaming services. In these ‘Streaming in Canada’ columns, we also highlight either wholly Canadian content or American/foreign content that has significant Canadian connections.

However, with so much new content releasing every week, you’d be forgiven for not even being aware of most of what comes out in general, let alone Canadian-specific programming.

With that in mind, we’ve rounded up some of the most prominent shows and movies with major Canadian connections. This means titles that feature Canadians in prominent roles, be it in front of or behind the camera. While the goal is to focus on streaming-exclusive content, we’re also considering movies that had either short theatrical runs or hybrid theatrical-digital releases, given this weird period that we’re in. The same goes for shows that were released on both cable TV and digital platforms simultaneously.

Without further ado, let’s get into it.

All Or Nothing: Toronto Maple Leafs

This five-part docuseries follows the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 2020-2021 NHL season and gives unprecedented on-the-ice and locker room access to the players, coaches and fans. The team’s match against its Original Six rival, the Montreal Canadiens, is also featured.

Notably, All or Nothing was narrated by Toronto’s own Will Arnett (Arrested Development).

It’s worth noting that the series was filmed in and around Toronto.

Stream Chucky on Amazon Prime Video. Note that a $12.99 CAD/month StackTV subscription is required on top of an Amazon Prime membership.

Kim’s Convenience (Season 5)

In the fifth and final season of the hit Canadian series, Appa and Umma grapple with a medical diagnosis while Janet moves home and Jung and Shannon’s long-distance romance becomes strained.

WandaVision was the most pirated TV series of 2021

WandaVision drew significant buzz when it premiered in January for being Marvel Studios’ first Disney+ series, and the first pandemic-era piece of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) content in general.

But the series has another, decidedly less flattering distinction: it was the most pirated show of 2021, according to piracy news site TorrentFreak. It wasn’t the only MCU show to make the site’s top 10, though:

  1. WandaVision (Disney+)
  2. Loki (Disney+)
  3. The Witcher (Netflix)
  4. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (Disney+)
  5. Hawkeye (Disney+)
  6. What If…? (Disney+)
  7. Foundation (Apple TV+)
  8. Rick and Morty (Adult Swim/StackTV in Canada)
  9. Arcane (Netflix)
  10. Wheel of Time (Amazon Prime Video)

It’s important to note, however, that U.K. piracy monitoring firm Muso says the “the overwhelming majority” of internet piracy comes from streaming sites, not torrent download sites like TorrentFreak. For context, 94 percent of piracy activity was on streaming sites in the first half of 2021.

Further, TorrentFreak only accounts for single episode torrents, which doesn’t paint a completely clear picture. While this metric works better for weekly release shows like WandaVision, Netflix still drops entire seasons simultaneously, which may skew numbers. To that point, TorrentFreak said Netflix’s Casa de Papel (AKA Money Heist) may have placed fifth otherwise, while Squid Game — Netflix’s breakout 2021 hit — would have made the list as well.

Still, it’s interesting to see what shows are being torrented the most, especially with respect to something like Foundation, which seems to have wrapped its first season with generally positive reviews but minimal public fanfare.

Looking ahead to 2022, it’s likely that Disney+ will fill at least a few spots on TorrentFreak’s next list between the likes of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk and Moon Knight.
