Where to stream viral Canadian horror movie Skinamarink in Canada

Over the past few months, you might have heard of an indie horror movie called Skinamarink.

After all, it’s been something of a viral sensation thanks to the likes of TikTok. What you might not have known, however, that it’s Canadian. Filmed by YouTuber Kyle Edward Ball in his native Edmonton for just $15,000 USD (about $20,000 CAD), the movie follows two children who cannot find their father and must deal with mysterious happenings in their home.

As a slow-burn experimental feature, it’s proven to be rather polarizing, but regardless, it’s certainly captured the internet’s attention. And now, after a small theatrical rollout in January, the movie is finally streaming worldwide, including in Canada, on Shudder.

The horror-themed service costs $5.99 CAD/month with a free 7-day trial. It’s available on a variety of platforms, including Android, iOS, Amazon Prime Video (as a channel) and the web.

Skinamarink isn’t the only Alberta production to recently take off. HBO’s hit The Last of Us series was also filmed in the province — a fact that the creators and stars, including Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, raved about to MobileSyrup. The series’ production designer even said he was surprised at how “clean” the province ended up being. Travel Alberta has also created an interactive map to let viewers view exact filming locations from the series.

Netflix explains password sharing restrictions, leaves users confused

Netflix has provided more details on how its password sharing crackdown will work, although it’s been a bit confusing so far.

On Tuesday, the streamer updated its Help Center page to note that you’ll need to see set a primary location for your account, and additional devices must connect to the same Wi-Fi network. However, it added that any devices outside of said primary location will need to connect to the home Wi-Fi and stream a title “at least once every 31 days,” otherwise it may be “blocked from watching Netflix.”

As noted by Gizmodo, though, the Help Center page has since been updated to remove mention of the 31-day period. Now, the company simply says “when someone signs into your account from a device that is not associated with your Netflix household, or if your account is accessed persistently from a location outside of your household, we may ask you to verify that device before it can be used to watch Netflix.”

As part of this verification process, the account holder will need to click a link that’s sent to their email or phone number. Users will then need to enter a provided code within 15 minutes on the device that requested it.

Therefore, it’s unclear how often Netflix will enforce this verification, especially considering it simply says “we may ask you to verify.” Likewise, the wording of “accessed persistently” is vague. We’ve reached out to Netflix for clarification and will update this story once a response has been received.

For now, though, we know that Netflix will officially begin charging for password sharing by the end of March. Following multiple quarters of subscriber losses and stiff streaming competition, the company began looking to a crackdown on password sharing last year. So far, it’s only been testing this via a roughly $3 CAD paywall in Central and South America. It remains to be seen exactly how much it will cost in Canada.

Netflix adds spatial audio to its top 700 titles

Netflix has announced that spatial audio is now available for more than 700 of its top titles.

This is a new perk for Premium subscribers ($21.99 CAD/month) at no additional cost.

With spatial audio, users streaming on devices with built-in stereo speakers or headphones will get more immersive, cinematic-esque sound quality. Spatial audio will be offered with movies and shows like Glass Onion: A Knives Out MysteryStranger ThingsWednesday and Watcher.

To find out which content supports the audio format, look for a special ‘spatial audio’ badge on each title. Alternatively, you can type ‘spatial audio’ into the Netflix search bar.

Additionally, Premium members can now download titles on up to six different devices, up from four.

This tool shows you how much Alberta resembles The Last of Us’ post-apocalyptic world

Travel Alberta has created an interactive map to showcase where HBO’s hit The Last of Us series was shot in the province.

Powered by Google Maps, the tool features per-episode breakdowns of the post-apocalyptic drama show’s filming locations. A brief description of what the location stood in for in the series will be listed, while the map will be updated weekly after each new episode.

For example, pre-pandemic scenes in the pilot with Sarah (Nico Parker) at school were filmed at Calgary’s Western Canada High School. Meanwhile, the Home Depot that Bill (Nick Offerman) visits in the highly acclaimed third episode was actually a Lowe’s in Calgary.

Speaking to CBC News, Travel Alberta noted that it’s been a challenge to get some of this data, given that some scenes were shot on private land. But the goal is to eventually have an itinerary throughout all nine episodes that you can use to track the trajectory of the entire series.

With a reported Game of Thrones-esque budget, The Last of Us is believed to be biggest TV production in Canadian history, making it particularly notable for the province. This meant that the series shot over the course of an entire year in cities like Calgary, Edmonton, High River, Lethbridge and Canmore.

A post shared by Canada’s Alberta (@travelalberta)

Speaking to MobileSyrup last month, series co-creator Craig Mazin praised Alberta’s scenery for perfectly capturing the seasonal passage of time that our lead characters, Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey), go through. Pascal and Ramsey also raved to us about filming in Alberta and specifically shouted out Canmore. The series’ production designer also recently said that he was “shocked” that the province was so “clean,” especially compared to the U.S.

The Last of Us is now streaming on Crave.

Where to stream Rian Johnson’s Poker Face series in Canada

Hot off his acclaimed Glass Onion, writer-director Rian Johnson has a new mystery series called Poker Face.

Premiering on January 26th and starring Russian Doll‘s Natasha Lyonne, Poker Face follows a woman who has the uncanny ability to detect when people are lying, which she uses to solve strange crimes.

Following a “mystery of the week” format, the series also stars Benjamin Bratt (Star), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (500 Days of Summer), Adrian Brody (The Pianist), Lil Rel Howery (Get Out), recent Oscar nominees Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All At Once) and Hong Chau (The Whale) and more.

In Canada, watching Poker Face is a little unorthodox. Since it’s exclusive to the U.S.-only Peacock series, Canadians will actually need to sign up to Rogers’ Citytv+ service. This is available as a $4.99/month Amazon Prime Video channel, with a free 30-day trial to start.
