Premium video on demand (PVOD) platforms are also fair game as movies continue to come to digital early amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Finally, we’ll highlight shows or movies that are made by Canadian companies, involve notable Canadian cast or crew and/or are filmed in Canada.

Spirited has become the most-watched Apple TV+ movie to date, Apple has confirmed.
While the tech giant doesn’t reveal exact Apple TV+ viewership figures,Deadline reports that Spirited has brought in 27 percent new viewers to Apple TV+ since premiering on November 11th.
Vancouver’s own Ryan Reynolds, who co-stars in the Christmas musical comedy alongside Will Ferrell, took to social media to celebrate the milestone.
Spirited is now the biggest movie ever on Apple TV+. I’m buying shots at the Genius Bar! pic.twitter.com/BeOOBGHnNy
It should be noted that Apple TV+ only has a couple dozen original movies, so this isn’t as significant a record as it might have been on other streaming services with more content. Still, it’s another feather in Reynolds’ cap, as he’s also the only actor to have three movies — 6 Underground, Red Notice and The Adam Project — in Netflix’s Top 10.
In Canada, his recent critically-acclaimed Welcome to Wrexham docuseries streams on Disney+. It tells the story of the eponymous Welsh sports team, the world’s third-oldest football club, and features Reynolds and fellow co-owner Rob McElhenney.
Apple, meanwhile, has been ramping up its film production as of late. Following a Best Picture win for CODA earlier this year, the streamer has put out notable films like Causeway with Jennifer Lawrence and the Will Smith-led Emancipation. Next year will also see the likes of Martin Scorsese’s Flowers of the Killer Moon and Ghosted with Chris Evans and Ana De Armas.
Disney has announced all of the movies and TV shows hitting its Disney+ service in Canada in January.
Some of the highlights in the New Year include the second season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, The Menu starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Ralph Fiennes and If These Walls Could Sing music documentary about the iconic Abbey Road Studios.
Note that Star content is often more adult-oriented, so we’ve marked those titles accordingly. You can also set parental controls to restrict these movies and shows from kids.

Walt Disney Animated Studios’ Strange World is arriving on Disney+ ahead of the holidays. On December 23rd, the film will be widely available to subscribers to watch.
Strange World is a brand-new animated film from Walt Disney Studios. It stars an eclectic cast comprised of Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Jaboukie Young-White, Gabrielle Union and Lucy Liu. The film tells the story of a family of explorers known as the Clades. The family set out to explore a mysterious land inhabited by strange lifeforms in hopes of gathering resources. However, the Clades must set aside their differences if they want to return home in one piece.
They’re in their element when exploring this world…
As for why the film didn’t hit its mark is anyone’s guess. Current reviews for the movie are more or less positive. Rotten Tomatoes has Strange Worldlisted at 74 percent on the Tomatometer. However, a general consensus is that the marketing for Strange World was weaker than previous Disney animated films.
While the film’s box office success may not have panned out for Disney, Strange World may receive new life on Disney+. Launching around the holidays is a great excuse for families to sit down and find out whether the film is indeed a flop or a hidden gem in Disney’s catalogue.

Bell Media and its Crave streaming service are set to become the exclusive streaming home for Sony Pictures Entertainment’s theatrical films. As part of a Pay-One window licensing agreement, the two companies have entered a long-term deal, kickstarting April 2023.
The agreement sees Crave becoming the exclusive Canadian service to receive all new Sony Pictures Entertainment films. Upcoming films will transition over to Crave following their “theatrical and home entertainment window.” Of the announced films, the deal will include upcoming Spider-Man spin-off films like Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Kraven the Hunter, and Madame Web.
Additionally, the deal will include the Canadian streaming rights to No Hard Feelings, Gran Turismo, the latter of which is based on PlayStation’s hit racing franchise. It’s also confirmed that new installments of Insidious and The Equalizer will also land on Crave following their theatrical releases.
“We are happy to extend our relationship with Bell Media and make Sony Pictures’ robust library of premium content available to more viewers across Canada,” said Stephanie Shinkoda, Vice President, Distribution and Co-Country Manager, Sony Pictures Television and Home Entertainment Canada, in a statement.
To satisfy Crave subscribers before April 2023, Sony Pictures Entertainment is bringing a ton of its backlog to the streaming service. Films like Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and Spider-Man: Homecoming are available for streaming now. Jumanji and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle are also primed to make their debut later this month.
Bell Media and Sony Pictures Entertainment confirm that additional films will be added at a later date.
Crave will be supporting Sony Picture Entertainment films in both English and French for subscribers. A Crave subscription is available starting at $9.99/month. For more on what’s coming to Crave this month, we’ve compiled a rundown.
Speaking of how long it’s been since that first film, though, you might have forgotten much of it or simply want to revisit Cameron’s world of Pandora. With that in mind, you can stream it on Disney+ Canada. The movie was temporarily removed from the service as part of a limited 4K theatrical re-release in September, but it’s since returned on time for The Way of Water.
The Way of Water will open in theatres on December 16th.
