Google reveals YouTube Music and Premium surpassed 80 million paid subscribers

This week, Google announced that YouTube Music and Premium has crossed the 80 million paid subscriber milestone. The company reports that the paid streams of revenue from YouTube saw a 30 million increase in subscribers since 2021.

The uptick in paid subscribers spans both YouTube Music and YouTube Premium. A paid subscription to YouTube Music provides users access to an ad-free experience while listening to a catalogue of music. YouTube Premium offers ad-free YouTube, the ability to download videos for offline viewing, access to YouTube Music, and other perks like Picture-in-Picture.

In a blog post, Google’s Global Head of Music for YouTube, Lyor Cohen, states that the rapid growth of 30 million subscribers is due to a number of things. First off, Google is investing in new features. This also includes partnerships with global carriers across Japan, Europe, and Korea. Additionally, Cohen believes the adoption of YouTube’s paid services can be due to the introduction of features like afterparties. Discounts on hardware and services are also said to be playing a part.

Google states it has become the number one contributor of revenue to the music industry. In September, Google announced it was contributing $6 billion USD (roughly $8.02 billion CAD) to the music industry. 30 percent of this contribution stems from user-generated content.

Last month, Google announced a price increase for the YouTube Premium Family plan in Canada, the U.S., the U.K., and other regions. Starting on November 21st, YouTube Music’s Family plan will cost $29.99 each month, a $5 increase from the current $17.99 monthly subscription. The Family plan enables users to share the perks with up to six accounts. A standard plan for YouTube Premium costs $11.99 per month. Prices on the individual plan remain the same.

HBO cancels Westworld ahead of planned Season 5

HBO has decided to cancel Westworld after its recently released fourth season.

It’s a shocking move from parent company Warner Bros. Discovery, as Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan said as recently as last month that plans were underway to produce a fifth and final season. It’s unclear if and when we’ll ever see what they had planned to wrap up the series, which was set in a futuristic world and explored the ramifications of artificial intelligence.

Following its October 2016 premiere, Westworld has garnered significant acclaim and 54 Emmy nominations, making it a tentpole for HBO. In Canada, the series streams on Crave and is one of the service’s marquee titles.

Warner Bros. Discovery did not provide a reason for the cancellation, simply saying in a statement that it’s “tremendously grateful” to Joy, Nolan and the other people involved in the creation of the series.

However, the expensive series’ initially strong ratings and reception have dropped as the seasons went along, and Warner Bros. Discovery has been enacting significant cost-cutting measures as of late. In an effort to save over $3 billion USD (about $4.04 billion CAD), CEO David Zaslav laid off 14 percent of the HBO Max workforce in the summer while cancelling the near-finished Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt, among other projects. Most recently, Warner Bros-Discovery chose to not move forward with a reboot of Degrassi, leaving that Canadian series’ future uncertain.

Netflix’s ad-supported tier unsupported on Apple TVs fix ‘coming soon’

Netflix launched its pocket-friendly ad-supported tier in Canada on November 1st. Canadians looking switch to the new $5.99/month subscription plan on an Apple TV, however, are currently out of luck.

The ‘Basic with ads’ tier seems to currently be unsupported on Apple TV devices, as first reported by Variety.

According to a statement given to Variety by a Netflix spokesperson, “Basic with ads plan support on tvOS is not available at launch but coming soon.”

A support document on Netflix’s website about the lack of support of ‘Basic with ads’ tier on Apple TV was first spotted by 9to5Mac.

It is likely that Netflix expediting the launch of the ad-supported tier from early 2023 to November 2022 caught Apple by surprise, and that played a part in the tier not being usable on Apple TV streaming devices. Netflix reportedly expedited the release of its ad-supported tier to beat Disney+, which aims to release its own cheaper, ad-enabled tier in December 2022.

It’s worth noting that Netflix’s ‘Basic,’ ‘Standard,’ and ‘Premium’ tiers work as intended on Apple TV devices. If you’ve already subscribed to Netflix’s ‘Basic with ads,’ and had intended to use it on an Apple TV, you’ll have to suffice with using the service with a different device for the time being. According to Apple, support for the ad-enabled plan on Apple TV is “coming soon.”

Netflix’s Basic with Ads tier now available in Canada — here’s what you need to know

Netflix’s ad-supported membership is now available in Canada.

Officially called ‘Netflix Basic with Ads,’ the tier is the streamer’s lowest-priced offering to date and, notably, is launching first in Canada and Mexico. Naturally, there are a lot of questions about the subscription option, especially since it’s a novel one among the big players in the Canadian streaming market.

Here’s everything you need to know about the service.

Price

Netflix Basic with Ads costs $5.99/month. Since Netflix no longer offers free trials, this is the most affordable entry-poin to the service besides sharing your account.

How do ads work?

Of course, Netflix is knocking down the cost of the membership in exchange for implementing ads. These ads will be run during both movies and TV shows at an average rate of four to five minutes per hour, and they’ll last for 15 or 30 seconds.

What kinds of ads will be shown?

In partnership with Microsoft, Netflix is opening up ads to a variety of companies, with one example shown so far being for L’Oréal. That said, the streamer has outlined some restrictions on ads. For example, it won’t allow political ads, nor those that promote guns or smoking. Ads will also vary depending on country, genre and user, but none will be shown on Kid’s Profiles.

Basic with Ads features

Besides the ads, Basic with Ads does offer some other limitations.

To start, streams are capped at 720p. Additionally, you won’t have the ability to download content for offline viewing, while “a limited number of movies and TV shows won’t be available due to licensing restrictions.” In a press briefing, Netflix COO Greg Peters clarified that the exact number of excluded titles will vary by country due to licensing agreements, but it will generally be in the “five to ten percent range.”

That said, the rest of the Netflix catalogue will remain accessible, as well as the entire Netflix Games platform. No ads will be shown through Netflix Games. You also will only be able to stream on one screen at a time.

How does Basic with Ads compare to Netflix’s other tiers?

Netflix offers three other membership options. For context, here’s a breakdown of them:

  • Netflix Basic — $9.99/month, up to 720p (the new standard resolution for Basic, up from 480p), can only stream on one screen at the same time
  • Netflix Standard — $16.49/month, up to 1080p, can stream on up to two screens at the same time
  • Netflix Premium — $20.99/month, up to Ultra HD (4K HDR), can stream on up to four screens at the same time

What data is Netflix collecting with Basic with Ads?

Privacy is obviously a big concern for many people. According to Netflix, only the birth date and gender you provided upon sign-up, as well as “general location information based on your IP address,” will be collected. The company says this will “help tailor the advertising and improve the product offering.” The company’s privacy policy can be found here
