Disney+ to become Canadian streaming home of Doctor Who in 2023

BBC and Disney have announced that Disney+ will become the exclusive global streaming home for Doctor Who next year. A Disney+ Canada spokesperson confirmed to MobileSyrup that this will include Canada.

The new episodes of the long-running British sci-fi series are set to release on Disney+ and BBC in late 2023. Russell T. Davies, who spearheaded the 2005 revival of Doctor Who, serves as showrunner on the upcoming season.

Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education) will play The Fifteenth Doctor in the new season, while fan-favourite David Tennant (The Tenth Doctor) will return to play The Fourteenth Doctor in three 2023 holiday specials. Catherine Tate, who played Donna Noble alongside Tennant’s Doctor, will also reprise the role for these specials.

BBC is planning all of these premieres next year in celebration of Doctor Who‘s 60th anniversary.

All 13 modern seasons of Doctor Who are currently streaming in Canada on Crave.

YouTube Premium family plan getting big price increase

Google has announced that it will be raising the price of its YouTube Premium family plan.

In an email to subscribers, the company confirmed that starting November 21st, the family plan will cost $22.99/month, up from the current $17.99 monthly cost. The family plan allows six users to share the same Premium account and watch YouTube videos ad-free.

It should be noted, however, that this doesn’t seem to apply to the individual YouTube Premium membership, which costs $11.99/month. Google also confirmed to The Verge that those who were grandfathered into a lower price for YouTube Premium as former Google Play Music subscribers will keep their reduced rate until April 2023.

For now, though, it’s not yet clear whether this change will take effect in Canada. We’ve reached out to Google for confirmation and will update this story once a response has been received.

In other YouTube Premium news, YouTube recently rolled back a controversial test on a Premium paywall for a 4K resolution.

Spotify might launch HiFi quality tier next month

It looks like Spotify might finally bring HiFi streaming quality to subscribers. HiFi music is already available on Apple Music, Deezer and Tidal, but currently, the streaming music platform doesn’t offer music quality beyond 320kbit/s.

Spotify’s confirmed a HiFi subscription is coming back in 2021, but the lossless quality setting hasn’t yet hit the music streaming platform. Now, a Reddit user (nearlymind) has spotted the feature ahead of what is likely its official launch.

When the Redditor cancelled their Spotify Premium subscription to switch to Apple Music, the platform sent them a survey that asked them if they would consider paying for Spotify Platinum in the next 30 days. If this survey is correct, Spotify Platinum, which is assumed to include lossless quality music, might roll out in November.

Spotify new Platinum plan could feature HiFi streaming support, Studio Sound, headphone tuner utility, audio insights, Library Pro, Playlist Pro and Limited ad-supported Spotify podcasts.

It’s currently unclear what Playlist Pro would entail, but it could be similar to Apple Music’s Smart Playlist feature, which automatically adds songs to a playlist that fits specific criteria. On the other hand, Library Pro could let users edit metadata for songs, artists, albums and more.

Spotify Platinum will cost $19.99 USD (about $27.52 CAD), according to the Redditor’s post, which puts the cost in-line with Tidal. However, Apple Music offers HiFi as part of its base-level $9.99 pricing, so it’s possible we’ll see a restructuring of Spotify’s pricing tiers.

Netflix says it will start charging you for “extra users” next year

The days of freeloading off your parents’ or friends’ Netflix accounts could soon be over.

While we knew Netflix’s crackdown on account sharing has been coming for several months, until now, it’s been unclear when the hammer would finally drop. During its most recent quarterly earnings call, the streaming giant announced that it will start charging a monthly fee to accounts that share passwords in early 2023.

Netflix recently launched a pilot program for the feature in some regions worldwide that charges an additional fee for subaccounts listed in the ‘Who’s Watching’ section. It’s unclear how much Netflix plans to charge per additional user in Canada, but it will likely be in the range of $4 – $5.

According to its earnings report, the streaming platform bounced back with 2.4 million new subscribers in the third quarter after losing nearly 1 million earlier this year. Netflix recently revealed plans to launch a $5.99 per month ad-supported subscription tier on November 1st. In other Netflix-related news, the streaming platform recently confirmed that it’s “seriously” looking into launching a cloud gaming service.

In March, Netflix said that it had “no plans” to expand its initial password-sharing paywall test to Canada.
