Netflix has confirmed that its highly anticipated original film, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, will begin streaming on December 23rd. The film will also premiere in theatres “on a to-be-announced date,” as well as at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
Glass Onion is a writer-director Rian Johnson’s sequel to his 2019 critically-acclaimed Knives Out and once again stars Daniel Craig’s Benoit Blanc, who’s now trying to solve a mystery in Greece. The sequel features an ensemble supporting cast that includes Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Kathryn Hahn, Jessica Henwick, Kate Hudson, Janelle Monáe, Leslie Odom, Jr. and Ethan Hawke. Most of the cast can be seen in a newly released image from the film (see above).
Following the success of the first Knives Out, several studios bid for the rights to the two sequels Johnson was planning. In the end, Netflix beat out Amazon and Apple in a deal worth $469 million USD (about $611 million CAD). Details on the third Knives Out film have yet to be revealed.

The Sandman is Netflix’s most recent fantasy series about the Endless of Dreams. The series focuses on Morpheus as he journeys across the dreaming and waking worlds.
From the mind of Neil Gaiman, a two-part bonus episode of THE SANDMAN, featuring the stories “A Dream of a Thousand Cats” and “Calliope,” is now streaming only on Netflix. pic.twitter.com/0z71QUNStG
When the show first appeared on Netflix, it had a 10-episode season, but Netflix has surprised viewers with an 11th bonus episode. This two-part eleventh episode is called A Dream of a Thousand Cats/Calliope.
This episode is pretty cool as it includes both 2D and 3D animations.
“We endeavoured to make the animated version of ‘A Dream of a Thousand Cats’ as mesmerizing and hypnotic as we could by utilizing the magic of real oil paintings on canvas,” explains Hisko Hulsing, the director and production designer of the episode. “We combined the paintings with classically drawn 2D animation, based on realistic 3D animation of telepathic cats in order to create a trippy world that feels both grounded and dreamy at the same time. Untold Studio’s in London created the breathtaking 3D animation of the cats. The wonderful 2D animation, oil paintings and stylizing were all done at Submarine Studio’s in Amsterdam.”
This episode features Canada’s Sandra Oh, Michael Sheen, James McAvoy, David Tennant and the creator of The Sandman, Neil Gaiman.
More than three years after Game of Thrones ended, HBO is officially set to release its second series in the world of Westeros, House of the Dragon, on August 21st.
Set two hundred years before Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon follows the beginning of the end of House Targaryen and the events leading up to the deadly Dance of the Dragons. The series was co-created by George R. R. Martin, the writer of the A Song of Ice and Fire books upon which Game of Thrones (with Colony‘s Ryan J. Condal) is based and stars Paddy Considine, Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Sonoya Mizuno and Rhys Ifans.
Canadians looking to check out the prequel series can do so through Bell’s Crave streaming service, the Canadian home of Game of Thrones. The first episode will premiere on Crave on August 21st at 6pm PT/9pm ET, with new episodes dropping every Sunday at 9pm ET. The series’ first season will run for 10 episodes.
It’s worth noting that as part of its big marketing campaign for House of the Dragon, Bell is running a Crave promotion. From August 17th until September 6th, new, reactivating and upgrading Crave subscribers can get an annual Crave Total subscription for $149.90 CAD plus tax, $50 off the regular price. For context, a monthly Crave Total membership costs $19.99/month.

Amazon’s Prime Video has revealed behind-the-scenes details on a number of Ontario filming locations in The Boys.
In a Twitter thread, the official Prime Video Canada account broke some of these down, including the particularly amusing tidbit that a key Season 3 scene set in Russia involved Brantford, Ontario. The scene in question follows The Boys as they break into a Russian facility, and the exterior for this location was actually a courthouse near Brantford’s City Hall.

Given that the show primarily films in Toronto, it’s fun to see a smaller city in Southwestern Ontario also factor into the production. Another highlight of the Twitter thread is the fact that part of The Boys‘ Season 2 premiere — in which The Deep (Chase Crawford) causes a stir at a water park — was shot at Brampton’s Wet ‘n Wild park.
In the Season 2 premiere of #TheBoys, we find The Deep – after getting kicked out of The Seven – causing a ruckus at a water park. That’s the Wet ‘n’ Wild Toronto park located in Brampton, Ontario. pic.twitter.com/5vdQB9BhLs
Other locations that Prime Video Canada spotlighted are a little more obvious, like Homelander (Antony Starr) and Stormfront (Aya Cash) holding a press conference in front of Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall.
Did you catch this one? The historic Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto serves as the setting for Vought Tower in #TheBoys. You can also see the venue’s beautiful interior used as the lobby for Vought’s headquarters in the series. pic.twitter.com/a02ZtzJf5x
The Boys is one of Prime Video’s most popular TV series, which makes it especially notable that it’s shot in Ontario. On top of that, the superhero series is executive produced by Vancouver’s Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and co-stars Mississauga, Ontario’s Nathan Mitchell as Black Noir.
The first three seasons of The Boys are currently streaming on Prime Video, with the fourth season expected to begin filming in a few weeks. Who knows where in Ontario Season 4 might shoot?
Apple is reportedly investing further into podcasts to create content that can potentially be adapted into series for its Apple TV+ service.
According to Bloomberg, Apple’s recent production deal with the Pulitzer Prize-winning podcast company Futuro Studios includes a stipulation that the tech giant is afforded the first crack at adapting any resulting podcasts.
So far, Apple has already produced two series based on podcasts: one based on Wondery’s WeCrashed: The Rise and Fall of WeWork (starring Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway), and the other on Joe Nocera’s The Shrink Next Door (starring Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd).
It’s unclear how well WeCrashed and The Shrink Next Door performed, given that Apple reveals little data about TV+. That said, other streaming services have adapted podcasts into acclaimed series, such as Amazon (Homecoming with Julia Roberts and Janelle Monáe) and Hulu (The Dropout starring Amanda Seyfried.)
For now, it seems like Apple is taking a measured approach to its podcast plans. Bloomberg reports that Apple has spent up to $10 million USD (about $12.7 million CAD) on deals with podcast companies like Futuro, which is a far cry from the hundreds of millions spent by the likes of Spotify.
It’s worth noting that Apple could also opt to leverage Futuro podcasts as a way to complement existing shows, as it has done for The Problem with Jon Stewart and For All Mankind. However, the company did not respond to Bloomberg‘s report when the outlet reached out for comment.
Disney has confirmed pricing and a launch date for its lower-priced, ad-supported membership for Disney+.
Debuting in the U.S. on December 8th, this new tier will be called ‘Disney+ Basic’ and be priced at $7.99 USD/month (about $10.21 CAD). That’s the current price for Disney+ in the U.S. The existing ad-free membership, meanwhile, will be rebranded as Disney+ Premium and cost $10.99 USD/month (about $14.04 CAD), a 38 percent increase.
However, it’s yet clear what any of this means for Canada. MobileSyrup has reached out to Disney for confirmation on whether ‘Disney+ Basic’ will come to Canada and will update this story once a response has been received.
For context, Disney declined to comment earlier this year on whether the ad-supported tier would release in Canada. It should also be noted that Disney+ is quite different in Canada compared to the U.S. In Canada, Disney+ features a variety of titles that are in the U.S. on Hulu, a completely separate service that has optional bundles with Disney+. Additionally, Disney+ in Canada costs $11.99/month or $119.99/year, so the pricing is also different from the U.S. to begin with.
News of the Disney+ Basic launch came during Disney’s Q3 2022 earnings release, in which it also confirmed that it has reached 152.1 million Disney+ subscribers. This is well above the 147 million that analysts had forecast. Disney says only 100,000 new subscribers were in the U.S. and Canada, meaning the majority came from international markets.
