Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown to star in Netflix sci-fi movie from Avengers directors

Directing duo Anthony and Joe Russo have lined up their next project: a Netflix sci-fi film called Electric State starring Stranger Things’ Millie Bobby Brown.

Netflix announced the news on Twitter alongside a brief synopsis:

Set in a retro-futuristic past, it follows an orphaned teen (Brown) as she traverses the American West with a robot and an eccentric drifter in search of her younger brother.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt is also in talks to join the film. While Electric State would be the first collaboration between Brown and the Russos, the brothers did, of course, work with Pratt on Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, who wrote the Russos’ four Marvel films, including Infinity War and Endgame, are penning the Electric State screenplay, based on a 2018 illustrated novel by Simon Stalenhag. Notably, Electric State will have an Avengers-level budget that’s “north of” $200 million USD (about $257 million CAD), according to The Hollywood Reporter. This would make it one of Netflix’s most expensive films ever. Filming is expected to begin in October.

Following their tenure at Marvel, the Russos have formed a close relationship with Netflix. Joe Russo co-wrote Extraction and the upcoming Extraction 2, starring Chris Hemsworth, while both Russos produced the action films. The Russos also directed The Gray Man, an action-thriller that stars Canada’s Ryan Gosling and reteams the brothers with Captain America star Chris Evans and Markus and McFeely.

While Extraction 2 doesn’t yet have a premiere date, The Gray Man is set to hit Netflix on July 22nd.

Netflix claims it will add 1,500 jobs by end of 2023, despite consistent layoffs

Netflix claims that as part of its “readjustment” of business, the company is looking at expansions and investments. This, in turn, will result in the addition of 1,500 jobs over the next year and a half, according to the company.

As Netflix’s business model shifts and its content goals evolve, the company is looking at ways to sustain growth and its subscriber base. As such, the company claims that it will “continue to invest significant amounts in our content and people,” according to Netflix co-CEO Reed Hastings. He also claims that the current employee base of 10,000 will grow by 1,500 “over the next 18 months.”

News of Netflix’s commitment to folding in new jobs comes at a time when the company has been continuing to lay off its own employees. This week, the company confirms that 300 staff were let go. This news came fairly quickly after another 150 employees were laid off in May. Netflix also laid off contractors at its Tudum outlet this year too. These layoffs come off the heels of Netflix reeling from a 200,000 loss of subscribers early this year.

A part of Netflix’s expected investment is in international markets. Currently, Netflix is available worldwide with the exception of Russia and mainland China. While it’s unlikely that Netflix will reestablish its presence in Russia anytime soon, the company is expected to double down on markets outside of North America. “Over the longer term, much of our growth will come from outside the U.S.,” states an internal memo sent by Reed.

In addition, Netflix’s core expansion may not entirely lay on video content. Instead, another core facet may be its investment in video games. Although the Netflix Games branch is still quite new, the company has already acquired three studios; Boss Fight Studios, Night School Studio, and Next Games. Plus, Netflix is evolving its gaming lineup on mobile devices. Most recently, the company announced that Canadian-made Spiritfarer is coming later this year. Plus, the turn-based strategy game Into the Breach is making its way to Android on July 19th.

Netflix has also been looking at new avenues to mitigate subscriber losses. As such, the streamer is launching a lower-cost ad-supported subscription model, co-CEO Ted Sarandos has confirmed. Additionally, the company is looking into paywalling password sharing between users.

It remains to be seen how these investments and pivots will affect the company’s growth and sustainability over the next year or so. With competitors like Disney, Crave, and Amazon doubling down on content, Netflix must look at ways to attract subscribers outside of a tone-deaf Squid Game reality game show.

Netflix CEO confirms plans to launch cheaper subscription with ads

Following reports that Netflix was considering a lower-cost, ad-supported subscription tier, co-CEO Ted Sarandos confirmed the company’s plans.

According to The Hollywood Reporter (via The Verge), Sarandos confirmed the plans during an interview at the Cannes Lion advertising festival.

“We’ve left a big customer segment off the table, which is people who say: ‘Hey, Netflix is too expensive for me and I don’t mind advertising.’ We [are] adding an ad tier; we’re not adding ads to Netflix as you know it today. We’re adding an ad tier for folks who say, ‘Hey, I want a lower price and I’ll watch ads,’” Sarandos said in the interview.

The news doesn’t exactly come as a surprise. Netflix has been expected to launch an ad-supported subscription tier for a while, due in part to the company’s other co-CEO, Reed Hastings, saying he was open to the idea in April.

Moreover, Sarandos’ comments come on the heels of Netflix losing subscribers for the first time in over a decade. In Q1 2022, Netflix lost 200,000 subscribers compared to Q4 2021. Although Netflix remains the largest streaming platform with 222 million subscribers, the subscriber loss clearly has the company thinking about ways to bring new people in. Whether offering a cheap, ad-supported tier is the way to do that remains to be seen (maybe a better idea would be reversing any of the numerous recent price hikes).

There are also questions around which company Netflix would partner with on ads. A Wall Street Journal report said Google and NBCUniversal were top contenders, but Sarandos wouldn’t give any details when pressed during the interview. Instead, Sarandos said the company might use a partnership in the interim while it builds out its own ad business.

Finally, it’s worth noting that Netflix isn’t the only streaming service considering an ad-supported tier. Disney has detailed plans to bring ads to Disney+ starting in the U.S. this year and to international markets in 2023, although it’s unclear if that includes Canada. Disney plans to run an average of four minutes of ads or less per hour, with no political or alcohol ads and no ads on shows aimed at pre-school audiences.

It remains to be seen if people are willing to pay for ad-supported streaming. From what I’ve seen, the general consensus online is that people are willing to have ads, or willing to pay for an ad-free experience, but not both.

New report breaks down how The Umbrella Academy contributes to Ontario economy

If you’ve ever wanted a more in-depth breakdown of how one of the many TV productions filmed in Canada contributes to the local economy, this might interest you.

In a new report, Oxford Economics unpacked the economic impact of the second season of Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy. The popular series is filmed in Ontario, including Toronto and Hamilton, and Canadian stars like Elliot Page, Colm Feore and T.J. McGibbon.

Overall, Oxford Economics found that more than $77.3 million CAD was spent on Season 2 of the series. Specifically, local wages and salaries accounted for the majority (59 percent) of production spend, with the remaining 41 percent ($31.9 million) going towards local goods and services.

In terms of jobs, this stimulated 1,120 jobs in Ontario, including 620 direct jobs for local artists and technicians, including set dressers, special effects experts, location managers and more.

The Umbrella Academy

It’s worth mentioning that Season 2 of the series was filmed in 2019, prior to any sort of COVID-19 restrictions. The upcoming third season, however, was shot during 2021 amid COVID-19 hurdles, which surely proved to be a boon for struggling businesses.

On that note, the timing of the report coincides with the June 23rd premiere of The Umbrella Academy‘s third season.

Netflix expected to lay off another 150 employees: report

In May, Netflix laid off around 150 employees and contractors amid a slump in business.

Now, the company is expected to do so again, according to Variety. Citing sources, the entertainment outlet reports that Netflix is preparing cuts “similar in size to the round of reductions” made last month. At the time, Netflix confirmed that more layoffs would come in 2022. Overall, Netflix has a global workforce of around 11,000 staffers.

The layoffs come as Netflix contends with a loss of 200,000 subscribers earlier this year, which has led its stock value to plummet. While it attributed this to the suspension of business in Russia, it’s easy to see how an ever-evolving streaming market, including increased competition from the likes of Disney (Disney+) and Warner Bros. (HBO Max), has also hit Netflix.

To help mitigate losses, Netflix is planning to launch a paywall on password sharing and a lower-cost, ad-supported membership option.
