Uncharted, starring Tom Holland lands on Netflix on July 15th

2022’s Uncharted film adaptation, which sees Tom Holland star as central character Nathan Drake, is coming to Netflix. On July 15th, the Sony Pictures film is making its streaming debut.

Uncharted first made its way to theatres in February. As of July 15th, it will have been 119 days since its theatrical release. As part of Sony’s signed major deal with Netflix, films released in 2022 onward will exclusively land on Netflix in the U.S. While the release window from theatrical run to streaming is still unknown, the span of time of Uncharted gives us a rough ideal. Though, at the time of signing the deal, it was unclear how Canada would factor in.

According to What’s On Netflix, it’s said this may only apply to the United States. Though, it is mentioned that details for other regions are “still to come.” Whether that means Canada will receive access to Uncharted on July 15th remains to be seen.

Alongside Holland in the role of Nathan Drake, Uncharted’s cast is made up of Mark Wahlberg as Sully, Sophia Taylor Ali as Chloe, Tati Gabrielle as Braddock, and Antonio Banderas as Santiago Moncada.

Uncharted is the first major video game adaptation from Sony’s PlayStation properties. However, it certainly isn’t the last. While an Uncharted sequel has not been given the greenlight, Sony is producing a series adaptation of The Last of Us, due to air on HBO.

On top of that, Sony has announced a Ghost of Tsushima film, and a Twisted Metal adaptation for Peacock. Most recently, the company confirmed that a Horizon series is coming to Netflix. Plus, a series based on God of War is in the works for Amazon. While Sony has a film exclusivity deal with Netflix, the company is no stranger to other services.

Netflix reveals Squid Game reality series, completely missing point of original show

Netflix is working on a 10-episode reality competition series based on its massively popular Squid Game series.

Announced at Alberta’s Banff World Media Festival, Squid Game: The Challenge will feature 456 global contestants who compete in a series of games to win $4.56 million USD (about $5.9 million CAD). Netflix says this is the largest lump-sum cash prize of any reality series ever, although, as The Hollywood Reporter notesX-Factor has given out recording contracts worth $5 million USD (about $6.49 million CAD).

Overall, The Challenge has a similar premise to the scripted Squid Game series, in which 456 people also vie for large cash prizes, albeit with life or death stakes. It’s currently unclear how Netflix will alter the games in the reality series to make them decidedly less fatal.

Regardless, people were quick to point out that making a reality series based on Squid Game is rather tone-deaf. After all, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk quite clearly intended for the series to be a critique of capitalism and economic class struggles. On Twitter, several people shared a rather astute tweet from writer Alex Blechman:

Several people naturally pointed out this series goes against the entire point of Squid Game.

Other responses were more humorous, but still in the same vein. Some shared images from Parasite, another South Korean drama about the disparities between classes:

Others posted other popular memes:

While it makes sense that Netflix would want to capitalize on its most-watched series of all time, perhaps a different approach was in order. In any event, those interested in taking part in Squid Game: The Challenge can visit SquidGameCasting.com. It’s important to note that Netflix requires applicants to be English-speaking, which is a questionable choice considering the original series was almost entirely in Korean.

A second season of the fictional Squid Game series was also recently confirmed to be in development.

It looks like Apple’s Ted Lasso is ending with Season 3

Ted Lasso is likely coming to an end.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, writer and Roy Kent actor Brett Goldstein said the creative team is approaching the comedy series’ upcoming third season as its last.

“We are writing it like that,” he said. “It was planned as three. Spoiler alert: everyone dies.” It should be noted that Apple itself has not commented on the future of the series.

While the bit about everyone dying is clearly a joke, Goldstein’s broader point about the series coming to an end lines up with previous comments from Ted Lasso himself, Jason Sudeikis, who also co-created the series. In 2021, Sudeikis told Entertainment Weekly that the show was envisioned as a “three-season arc,” although he admitted at the time that he didn’t know what might come after that.

Since its debut in August 2020, Ted Lasso has become Apple TV+’s flagship original series. The show, which follows an American basketball coach who travels to England to coach a soccer team, has garnered rave reviews and numerous Emmy nominations for its blend of humour, performances and uplifting tones.

Production is currently underway on Season 3, which is set to premiere on Apple TV+ later this year.

Streaming in Canada on Prime Video, Apple TV+, Crave and Netflix [May 30-June 5]

Every week, MobileSyrup outlines some of the most notable movies and TV shows that recently hit Canadian streaming platforms.

Our ‘Streaming in Canada’ column typically focuses on new content from Amazon Prime Video, Crave and Netflix, but other services like Apple TV+ and Disney+ are mentioned when relevant. Premium video on demand (PVOD) platforms are also fair game as movies continue to come to digital early amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Finally, we’ll highlight shows or movies that are made by Canadian companies, involve notable Canadian cast or crew and/or are filmed in Canada.

Amazon Prime Video

The Boys (Season 3) [Amazon Original]

One year after the events of Season 2, Hughie, Butcher and The Boys work for the government until they learn about a potential superweapon that could take down the increasingly unhinged Homelander.

Based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic series of the same name, The Boys was developed by Eric Kripke (Supernatural) and stars Karl Urban (The Lord of the Rings trilogy), Jack Quaid (Vinyl), Antony Starr (Banshee), Erin Moriarty (Marvel’s Jessica Jones), Laz Alonso (Avatar), Tomer Capone (Hostages), Mississauga, Ontario’s Nathan Mitchell (iZombie) and Jensen Ackles (Supernatural). It’s worth noting the series was filmed in Toronto, while Vancouver’s Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Superbad) served as producers.

Amazon Prime Video premiere date: June 3rd, 2022 (first three episodes, new episodes every Friday)
Genre: Superhero
Runtime: Eight episodes (around one hour each)

Stream The Boys here.

Note: I don’t usually include my own opinions on what’s featured in each Streaming in Canada column — mostly because there’s just too much to watch! But I have seen the first five episodes of The Boys Season 3, and I’m happy to say it’s just as good as ever. The first few episodes are perhaps a bit slower-paced than one might expect from the show, but it’s all in service of taking the time to get into the headspace of our characters amid the new status quo.

Of course, this means we see more of Butcher’s (Karl Urban) struggles to work with the government and Homelander’s (Antony Starr) ever-fragile mental state, and both remain fantastic in their respective roles. (Seriously — Homelander is one of the best characters in any superhero story ever.) But I was especially pleased to see Hughie (Jack Quaid) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) get satisfying and emotional beats. I’m also intrigued to see what Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy brings to the mix. All around, The Boys is as sharp as ever, and a must-watch even if you’re not normally a fan of superheroes. Oh, and you’ll never see Ant-Man the same way again.

An Amazon Prime Video subscription is included at no additional cost with an Amazon Prime membership, which costs $79/year.

The full list of movies and shows that hit Amazon Prime Video Canada last month can be found here. Meanwhile, a round-up of June’s new content can be found here.

Apple TV+

Physical (Season 2) [Apple Original]

Things look up for Sheila after she successfully launches her first fitness video until she becomes torn between her husband and a dangerous attraction to someone else.

Physical was created by Annie Weisman (About a Boy) and stars Rose Byrne (Damages), Rory Scovel (The Eric Andre Show) and Geoffrey Arend (Body of Proof).

Apple TV+ Canada premiere date: June 3rd, 2022 (first episode, new episodes every Friday)
Genre: Comedy-drama
Runtime: Ten episodes (around 30 minutes each)

Stream Physical here.

An Apple TV+ subscription costs $5.99/month.

Find out what’s coming to Apple TV+ this summer here.

Crave

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

Several years after the events of The Crimes of Grindelwald, Albus Dumbledore recruits Newt Scamander to lead a team against Grindelwald’s growing legion of followers.

It’s important to note the film has been the subject of many controversies, including Wizarding World creator and The Secrets of Dumbledore co-writer J.K. Rowling’s repeated transphobic comments.

Original theatrical release date: April 15th, 2022
Crave premiere date:
May 30th, 2022
Genre: Fantasy
Runtime: 2 hours, 22 minutes

Stream Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore here.
