Where to stream Top Gun in Canada ahead of Top Gun: Maverick

After a staggering number of COVID-related delays, Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick will finally release exclusively in theatres on May 27th.

The action drama film is a sequel to the late Tony Scott’s iconic 1986 Top Gun and sees Tom Cruise reprise his role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as he trains a new team of Top Gun graduates.

Now, if you’re like me and hadn’t ever seen the original Top Gun film before, you might be wondering where to watch it in Canada. After all, Maverick has been getting rave reviews, with many calling it a significant improvement over the original. (For what it’s worth, my colleague Bradley Bennett and I got to attend an early screening last week, and we both agree: the movie is absolutely fantastic).

With all of that in mind, here’s how you can stream the original Top Gun in Canada. All in all, you have a few options.

Firstly, the film is streaming on Crave’s Starz tier, which costs $5.99/month on top of the base $19.99/month membership. Of course, that’s pretty expensive if you don’t already have Crave, and in that case, Top Gun is also available on Prime Video through Starz’s $5.99/month add-on with a 30-day trial.

Elsewhere, the film is streaming on Paramount+, which costs $5.99/month with a seven-day free trial. You can also rent it for $3.99 to $4.99 on premium video on demand (PVOD) platforms like iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Prime Video and the Cineplex Store.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore heads to Crave on May 30

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is coming exclusively to Crave on May 30th.

This is pretty notable since it’s the same date the film hits the U.S.-only HBO Max service. We saw this for the first time with The Batman, which hit Crave on April 18th.

Additionally, this is only six weeks after the film hit theatres on April 15th.

To watch the film, a Crave subscription starts at $9.99 per month for a Mobile plan that includes HBO access content like Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. If you don’t plan on only using Crave on your phone, a Crave Total subscription is required for streaming on Crave-supported devices.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is the third instalment in the Fantastic Beasts series and is directed by David Yates. It stars Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law, Dan Fogler, Jessica Williams, and more.

It’s worth noting that Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is based on a screenplay co-written by J.K Rowling, who is quite problematic for her anti-transgender stances. As much as I love the Wizarding World, it’s good to keep updated on the issues the writer presents and how hurtful Rowling’s transphobic remarks can be to the community.

If you want to learn more about this controversy, head to this article that leads to readings offering more information on Rowling’s remarks from the LGBTQ+ community.

Netflix drops first trailer for Russo brothers’ The Gray Man, starring Canada’s Ryan Gosling

Netflix has released the first trailer for The Gray Man, its highly anticipated action movie from Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame directors, The Russo Brothers.

In the film, a top CIA mercenary, Sierra Six (London, Ontario’s own Ryan Gosling) discovers dark agency secrets, making him the target of international assassins, including his unhinged former colleague, Lloyd Hansen (Captain America himself, Chris Evans).

The Gray Man is notable for a number of reasons.

To start, it’s said to be Netflix’s most expensive film to date, thanks to a budget of around $200 million USD (about $257 million CAD). Further, the film re-teams The Russo Brothers with Captain America star Evans, as well as screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Joe Russo penned the script for The Gray Man — based on Mark Greaney’s eponymous novel series — alongside Markus and McFeely, who previously wrote The Russo Brothers’ four Marvel films: Captain America: The Winter SoldierCaptain America: Civil WarInfinity War and Endgame.

The Russos have specifically said that The Gray Man is meant to be a political action thriller in the vein of The Winter Soldier, which is regarded as one of the best Marvel films.

Beyond Gosling and Evans, The Gray Man features an all-star cast that includes Ana De Armas (Knives Out), Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton), Jessica Henwick (The Matrix: Resurrections), Billy Bob Thornton (Fargo) and Tamil acting icon Dhanush (Vadachennai).

The Gray Man will begin streaming on Netflix on July 22nd.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is now streaming on Paramount+ in Canada

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has begun streaming on Paramount+ in Canada.

While we knew that the Sega video game adaptation would be available on the service in the U.S. on May 24th, given its 45-day theatrical exclusivity, it wasn’t previously clear where it would stream in Canada. A Paramount+ subscription costs $5.99 CAD/month.

In the sequel to 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic allies with a crafty fox named Tails to face off once more against the evil Dr. Robotnik, who has enlisted the dangerous Knuckles the Echidna.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was once again directed by Jeff Fowler and features returning cast members Ben Schwartz (Sonic), James Marsden (Tom), Newmarket, Ontario’s own Jim Carrey (Robotnik), Tika Sumpter (Maddie) and Canadian-raised Lee Majdoub (Stone). Meanwhile, Idris Elba voices Knuckles and Colleen O’Shaughnessy reprises her fan-favourite role of Tails from the Sonic video games. It’s also worth noting that much of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was shot in Vancouver, just like the first film.

Since its release in early April, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has grossed more than $375 million USD (about $482.5 million CAD) worldwide, making it the highest-grossing video game film to date. Paramount is currently developing a third Sonic film, as well as a Paramount+ spin-off series focused on Elba’s Knuckles.

On the video game front, Sega is set to release the Sonic Origins remaster collection next month and the mysterious open-world title Sonic Frontiers later this year.

Paramount releases the first Mission: Impossible 7 Trailer

Paramount has released the first teaser for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One online.

The two-minute trailer for the seventh MI film comes more than a year before the film’s July 2023 release date. This first glimpse of the Tom Cruise-led blockbuster showcases various action shots featuring Cruise’s IMF agent Ethan Hunt.  Plot details are scarce, but the trailer does feature dialogue snippets hinting at a global conspiracy with Hunt at the center.

The trailer comes after widespread leaks over the weekend. Paramount quickly handed out copyright claims to any Twitter user caught with the footage early. The film was first shown off last month at CinemaCon but is now being made public for general audiences to see.

Dead Reckoning Part One marks the third Mission: Impossible film from director Christopher McQuarrie (following Rogue Nation and Fallout). Franchise mainstays Cruise, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, and Rebecca Ferguson are all back reprising their roles from prior films.  Joining the cast this time around is Hayley Atwell as the mysterious Grace, who has been described by McQuarrie as a “destructive force of nature” whose loyalties are “somewhat ambiguous.”

MI 7 hits theaters on July 14, 2023. You can catch up on the Mission: Impossible franchise now on Paramount+.

How to cancel Netflix

Netflix is expecting to lose around 2 million subscribers in Q2 of 2022. If you want to be a part of that wave, keep reading.

Keep in mind that cancelling your Netflix subscription doesn’t have to be permanent. As long as you keep signing up at least once every 10 months, you’ll still be able to retain your profile information.

Further, once you cancel, you’ll still be able to access Netflix for the remainder of your last paid month.

< TLDR >

Click on your profile image, and you can cancel your subscription under the ‘Account’ heading. It’s a big grey button right near the top — you can’t miss it.

How to cancel on Netflix.com

Lucky for us, getting out of a Netflix subscription is more straightforward than unsubscribing from most email newsletters. Simply log into your account on Netflix.com, then navigate to the ‘Account’ section from the drop-down menu located in the top right of the screen.

The section that appears at the top of the page is your ‘Membership & Billing.’ Near the top of that section is a grey button that says ‘Cancel Membership.’

Clicking on it will bring you to another page where Netflix will ask if you want to sign up for its newsletter (don’t) or if you want to downgrade your subscription to a cheaper plan instead of cancelling. Along with these options, there’s also a big blue button called ‘Finish Cancellation.’

How to cancel from the Netflix app

If you have an iPhone or any other Apple device, you’re out of luck, and you’ll need to refer to the step above.

The steps are the same as above if you run Android, but you can do them in the Netflix app. Tap on your profile icon in the top right and choose ‘Account.’ Then keep tapping on the ‘Cancel Membership’ buttons until you’re out.

How to cancel from most smart TVs

Much like the other two options, cancelling your Netflix account on a smart TV starts with selecting your profile icon and then navigating to the ‘Account’ page.

From there, choose the grey ‘Cancel Membership’ button and follow the prompts until you can barely remember how many kids are in Stranger Things.

Amazon Prime Video original Night Sky to be beamed into space

Amazon plans to beam its new Prime Video series Night Sky into space. The company is working with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and satellite services providers SES and Intelsat.

Night Sky premiered on Amazon Prime Video on May 20th. The series stars Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons in a sci-fi tale about a couple who years ago discovered a chamber buried in their backyard. The chamber leads them to a strange and deserted planet. For years, the couple has kept this chamber a secret. However, a stranger enters their lives and complicates the matter.

With a clear focus on sci-fi and the star system, it is understandable why Amazon chose to beam Night Sky into the galaxy. Though, it’s still a wild concept to wrap your mind around. In a press release, Amazon states that any lifeform “open to receiving satellite signals 384,000 kilometres away and beyond — the equivalent distance from Earth to the Moon,” will be able to access the broadcast.

I suppose that means that alien lifeforms won’t have to pay the $79 annual fee for an Amazon Prime Video subscription. Thanks, Bezos.

Amazon’s Night Sky is the first TV series to be distributed to space. This marks a pretty significant milestone for content. Co-stars Chai Hansen and Kiah McKirnan virtually welcomed viewers to the space premiere.

Amazon’s press release also states that “the broadcast will occur in Ku- and C-band, common frequencies for satellite TV, media distribution, and communications.”

All eight episodes of Night Sky are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

I wonder how long until alien lifeforms start writing their review on Rotten Tomatoes?

Marvel is now working on a Daredevil series for Disney+: report

After years of rumours and speculation, it seems like Marvel’s Devil of Hell’s Kitchen is returning for another series.

Variety reports that Marvel Studios is now developing a Daredevil show for Disney+. Matt Corman and Chris Ord (Cover Affairs) are writing and executive producing the series.

While Marvel hasn’t officially commented on the project, and Variety didn’t provide further details, it’s safe to assume this series will star fan-favourite actor Charlie Cox. He originally played Matt Murdock/Daredevil in Netflix’s beloved Daredevil series, as well as its Defenders spin-off, before it was cancelled. However, Marvel clearly understood his popularity, as Cox was brought back as Murdock for a cameo in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which, like other Marvel Cinematic Universe titles, was otherwise not connected to Netflix’s shows.

The biggest clue for Cox’s involvement, though, comes from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige himself. In December, Feige coyly told CinemaBlend that “If you were to see Daredevil in upcoming things, Charlie Cox, yes, would be the actor playing Daredevil.”

Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that Disney+ just got Daredevil and all of the other Netflix shows. On top of that, Vincent D’Onofrio, who played Daredevil villain Kingpin on the Netflix series, reprised his role in Marvel’s Hawkeye, so both characters have been re-introduced to audiences. A costume designer for the Hawkeye spin-off Echo later appeared to leak that both Cox and D’Onofrio are in the show.

Given all of this, it seems like Marvel has been building to a grand television return for Daredevil. It remains to be seen, however, whether other actors from the original series, like Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page) and Elden Henson (Foggy Nelson), will return.
