YouTube is actively looking into issue affecting ad warning countdown

YouTube ads are intrusive and annoying though tolerable in many cases. However, a rising issue is affecting YouTube’s five-second countdown that typically plays prior to throwing to an ad. Thankfully, the company is actively looking into the problem.

YouTube users have been experiencing an odd occurrence where a video will suddenly cut to an ad without warning. Traditionally, YouTube will display a small five-second countdown in the bottom right corner of the screen before throwing to a midroll advertisement. This issue has been continuously affecting users across various platforms for weeks.

It appears as though the issue is most commonly found on TVs using the YouTube app. However, there have also been reported issues on web, mobile, and even consoles. Users have taken to Reddit as well as Twitter to discuss the issue at hand.

Although some firmly believe YouTube actively removed this feature, the company has been responding to complaints on Twitter. In one instance, the TeamYouTube account says, “We’re looking into the issue of the 5-second countdown for midroll ads not showing on videos. thx for your report!”

In another instance, the account asks that users send feedback to report an issue to YouTube. To do so, users must sign into their account, select their profile picture and hit ‘Send feedback’. This then prompts users to describe the issue and include any screenshots that may be useful.

Unfortunately, there doesn’t appear to be an solution that can solve the issue from the user’s end. This is a bug that YouTube has to address itself. Thankfully, the company is aware of the situation and is looking into it. However, there’s no current word on when a fix may be released.

Disney+ series Ahsoka to premiere in August, trailer revealed

Disney and LucasFilm are hosting Star Wars Celebration and are revealing new details on the Ahsoka series. The annual event unpacks all the latest announcements and reveals and gives some new tidbits on what fans can expect.

Revealed during an exclusive panel, the long-awaited Ahsoka series, starring Rosario Dawson, is due to premiere on Disney+ this August. As part of Star Wars Celebration, fans are being treated not only to a new Ahsoka poster but the first teaser trailer.

The teaser sees Dawson returning as the beloved Star Wars character Ahsoka. The character was last seen in the series The Book of Boba Fett. She is shown to search the galaxy as rumours regarding Grand Admiral Thrawn’s return continue to surface.

On top of outlining the series’ plot, the Ahsoka trailer shows brief snippets of returning Star Wars characters in live action as well as new faces. For instance, we’re given the first look at Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren as well as Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who is cast as Hera. Newcomer Ray Stevenson is said to be playing a new character, described as a former Jedi. Finally, we’re given a small look at the big bad Thrawn. However, casting for the awaited villain has not been announced.

Dave Filoni is once again the executive producer on the series as well as one of the writers. Filoni has largely been the executive producer on many contemporary Star Wars projects on Disney+ including The Mandalorian, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and The Book of Boba Fett. It’s not yet known who is attached to direct the series.

Disney+ is currently wrapping up the third season of The Mandalorian, with the season set to conclude on April 19. Suffice to say, some threads might be created as connective tissue between the streamer’s flagship Star Wars series and Ahsoka.

Netflix developing new series with Toronto’s Mae Martin

Netflix has ordered Tall Pines, a new thriller series from Toronto’s Mae Martin.

On top of starring in the series, Martin will serve as creator, co-showrunner (with Servant‘s Ryan Scott) and executive producer. Toronto-based Sphere Media (Sort Of) is co-producing the series.

Per Netflix, the series is “set in a bucolic but sinister town that explores the insidious underbelly of the troubled teen industry and the eternal struggle between one generation and the next.”

Martin is the co-creator and star of the acclaimed British series Feel Good, a semi-autobiographical story about a Canadian comedian who goes to the U.K. and falls in love with another woman. The series streams internationally on Netflix, including in Canada. Martin also appeared in several episodes of HBO’s The Flight Attendant and was a featured comedian in Amazon’s LOL: Last One Laughing Canada.

A release date and other casting information for Tall Pines have not yet been revealed.

In other Canadian Netflix news, the streamer greenlit a new Nunavut-set Indigenous comedy series last week.

Amazon’s The Rings of Power cost $500 million, but less than half of viewers finished it: report

Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power hasn’t quite been the big hit the company was hoping for, according to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter.

While streamers like Amazon typically don’t reveal viewership data, THR reports that only 37 percent of those who watched Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings series in the U.S. actually completed it. That number does rise to 45 percent overseas, although the outlet notes that per insiders, a 50 percent completion rate would be “solid but not spectacular.”

Assuming this data is accurate, the majority of people not even finishing an eight-episode season of a highly-publicized show wouldn’t bode too well for Amazon. According to Variety, Amazon has already spent around $465 million USD (about $625.9 million CAD) on the first season in the hopes of building out a five-season Game of Thrones-level tentpole. That also doesn’t include the $250 million USD (about $336.6 million CAD) cost to purchase the LOTR rights from the Tolkien estate, publisher HarperCollins and New Line Cinema.

Another metric to gauge the Rings of Power‘s performance is Nielsen, which tracks the number of minutes watched in the U.S. for popular TV shows. According to the firm, Netflix held the top 10 spots in the 2022 most-watched streaming shows list, with Amazon’s own The Boys even coming in higher (11th) than The Rings of Power (15th). While it’s unclear exactly how much Amazon spends on the Toronto-shot The Boys (reports peg the first season budget at around $10 million USD/$13.5 million CAD), it’s undoubtedly a lot less than The Rings of Power. THR also notes that 2022 was actually an improvement for Prime Video, as 2021’s top 15 most-watched streaming shows, per Nielsen, didn’t include anything from Prime Video.

Clearly, then, Amazon has already invested an ungodly amount of money into the series — believed to be well above what any other company has spent on a series. As THR notes, The Rings of Power has also failed to be a major awards contender, whereas Game of Thrones alone netted HBO 59 Emmy wins across a variety of categories, the most of any drama series.

Speaking to THR, Amazon Studios boss Jennifer Salke denied reports that The Rings of Power has underperformed. “This desire to paint the show as anything less than a success — it’s not reflective of any conversation I’m having internally,” she told the publication. She went on to say that the second season, which has been filming since October, presents “a huge opportunity” to grow the property after a lot of setup was required in its freshman outing.

The discussion surrounding The Rings of Power came as part of a larger THR piece on Amazon’s entertainment business. In it, the outlet reports that a variety of creatives call Amazon Studios “a confusing and frustrating place to do business,” citing uncertainty surrounding the types of content it wants to produce.

“There’s no vision for what an Amazon Prime show is. You can’t say, ‘They stand for this kind of storytelling.’ It’s completely random what they make and how they make it,” says one showrunner who’s worked a lot with Prime Video, per THR.

HBO planning to reboot Harry Potter into seven-season TV series: report

Warner Bros. is nearing a deal to produce a live-action streaming series for HBO Max based on the Harry Potter book series, according to Bloomberg.

The outlet says the plan is to have seven seasons, each focused on one of the novels. While the Harry Potter films were overall critical and commercial successes, they naturally had to cut a fair amount of material to fit into roughly two-hour runtimes. Therefore, Warner Bros. is intending to use the TV format for a more in-depth exploration of the storylines of the books on HBO Max. (In Canada, most HBO Max originals stream on Crave, so presumably, this series would as well.)

Currently, Warner Bros. is said to still be in negotiations with Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling. While she’s not expected to be a showrunner, Rowling would still be attached as a producer to ensure the adaptation is faithful to her novels. Part of Rowling’s larger deal with the entertainment giant requires her to sign off on any Wizarding World-related projects.

The last mainline Harry Potter film was 2011’s Deathly Hallows — Part 2, although three spin-off prequel films in the Fantastic Beasts series — all of which have been written or co-written by Rowling — have been released in the years since. That said, reception to the Fantastic Beasts series has been middling, with last year’s Secrets of Dumbledore even garnering negative reviews while becoming the lowest-grossing movie in the entire ‘Wizarding World’ franchise. Therefore, it makes sense that Warner Bros. would return to the main Harry Potter series, especially in a nostalgia-fueled industry.

However, news of a potential Potter reboot has been met with a mixed response, with some pointing out that we’re barely 10 years removed from the Daniel Radcliffe-led movies. Beyond that, though, the Wizarding World is now viewed as tainted by many amid ongoing controversies surrounding Rowling herself.

Since 2019, the author has been making repeated comments about transgender people that have been condemned for helping to spread hatred and abuse toward an already marginalized community. Members of the LGBTQ+ community have criticized Rowling for her anti-trans rhetoric, as have Harry Potter cast members like Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, who distanced themselves from the author while expressing support for trans people. Most recently, Rowling led many to call for a boycott of Warner Bros. best-selling Hogwarts Legacy, a video game based on the Wizarding World, due to the fact that she would ultimately profit from its success.

Should the HBO Max series go through, it remains to be seen who else will be involved and, more importantly, how Rowling herself might affect the project.

Keanu Reeves movies to stream in Canada after John Wick: Chapter 4

Who doesn’t love Keanu Reeves?

For decades, the Toronto-raised actor has won the hearts of many for kindness, strong work ethic and varied career that includes big blockbusters, comedy, romance, video games and, even, reporting for the CBC.

His latest film, John Wick: Chapter 4, is arguably his best yet, delivering some of the most visceral, slick and well-shot action in recent memory. While Reeves is set to make an appearance in next year’s John Wick spin-off, the Ana de Armas-led The Ballerina, his future with the series beyond that remains in question.

For now, though, we can at least go back to his older work. So, if you want more Keanu in your life after Chapter 4, here’s where to watch a bunch of his most prominent movies in Canada (See here for a John Wick-specific round-up).

Bill & Ted trilogy

Reeves’ breakthrough role came as the titular Ted in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, a sci-fi comedy about two time-travelling dim-witted high school students. Alongside Alex Winter (Bill), Reeves would return for two sequels.

Constantine

While it received mixed reviews upon its release in 2005, this DC Comics adaptation has become something of a cult film ever since. In it, Reeves stars as John Constantine, a cynical exorcist with the ability to travel between Earth and Hell. It’s worth noting that Reeves and original director Francis Lawrence have also been trying to get a sequel made.

Unfortunately, Constantine isn’t on any subscription streaming service, so you’ll have to rent or buy the film on PVOD platforms like iTunes and Google Play (starting at $4.99).

The Devil’s Advocate

This supernatural horror film stars Reeves as a lawyer who joins a major firm only to discover that its owner, played by Al Pacino, is actually the Devil.

Stream The Devil’s Advocate on Netflix.

Man of Tai-Chi

Reeves’ directorial debut has him playing the antagonist in this story about a young martial artist in an underground fighting ring. Although it was a box office bomb, it did receive fairly positive reviews for its action.

Stream Man of Tai-Chi here.

The Matrix series

Arguably Reeves’ most iconic role pre-Wick saw him kung fu his way through the digital world to save humanity from an AI.

Unfortunately, only 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections — which saw Reeves reunite with fellow Canadian Carrie-Anne Moss — is on a subscription streaming service: Crave. The original trilogy — The MatrixThe Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions — are only available to rent or purchase on platforms like iTunes and Google Play, starting at $4.99.

Much Ado About Nothing

In Kenneth Branagh’s romantic comedy adaptation of the eponymous Shakespeare play, Reeves portrays Don John, the evil half-brother of Denzel Washington’s character, Don Pedro.

Stream Much Ado About Nothing on Hoopla (free with supported library cards) and Tubi (free with ads).

My Own Private Idaho

A smaller and more intimate movie than many younger audiences might expect from the John Wick star, My Own Private Idaho stars Reeves as Scott, a young man who travels with his best friend Mike (the late River Phoenix) to find the latter’s mother.

Stream My Own Private Idaho on Amazon Prime Video and Crave (Starz membership required for both).

Point Break

In this iconic 1991 crime action film, Reeves plays an undercover FBI agent tasked with investigating a group of bank robbers, leading him to develop a complex relationship with the ringleader (the late Patrick Swayze).

Sadly, Point Break isn’t on any subscription streaming service, so you’ll have to rent or buy the film on PVOD platforms like iTunes and Google Play (starting at $4.99).

Speed

Pop quiz, hotshot: which high-octane 1994 action movie stars Reeves as an LAPD officer who’s trying to save a bus that’s rigged with a bomb that will detonate if it goes below 50 mph (80km)? Speed, of course, which co-stars Sandra Bullock and Dennis Hopper. Fun fact: it was also written by Reeves’ fellow Torontonian, Graham Yost.

Stream Speed on Disney+.

Toy Story 4

We might be a little biased here, but Reeves has arguably the best role in this animated “fourquel” as Duke Caboom, a larger-than-life Canadian daredevil toy.

Stream Toy Story 4 on Disney+.

Naturally, that only covers some of Reeves’ lengthy filmography and doesn’t include TV appearances or video game roles. On the latter front, he plays Johnny Silverhand in the massive RPG Cyberpunk 2077, a role he’s set to reprise in an expansion, Phantom Liberty, releasing later this year.

Additionally, here’s where to stream other non-John Wick action movies in Canada.
