Netflix is rolling out a new ‘Category Hub’ globally to offer users more personalized content recommendations.
This updated hub will be available starting April 21st in the left-hand menu on both adult and kids’ profiles. Here, you’ll see ‘Top 3’ categories based on what you normally watch. Curated collections centred around occasions like Earth Day or Internation Women’s Day will also be shown here.
However, Netflix didn’t mention how specific these categories will get. In the sample image provided in the news release, the streamer simply shows ‘Dramas,’ ‘Comedies’ and ‘Action’ in the Top 3, which are all fairly broad. Meanwhile, Netflix already has more defined categories elsewhere on the platform, including those for ‘Blockbuster Sci-Fi Movies,’ ‘Oscar-winning films,’ ‘Movies Based on Real Life’ and, as of this month, ‘Short-Ass Movies.’
In related news, Netflix confirmed earlier this week that it had its first quarterly loss of subscribers — 200,000 — in Q1 2022. The company attributed this to the suspension of its business in Russia amid the country’s invasion of Ukraine, although it estimates further losses of two million subscribers in the second quarter.
In May 2022, Netflix Canada is set to stream several new TV shows and films, including part 1 of Stranger Things season 4, Love, Death & Robots season 3, The Circle season 4 and Vampires in the Garden.

Netflix says it’s looking into adding a lower cost, ad-supported subscription tier.
Previously, Netflix has been non-committal about such an offering, despite some analysts suggesting that the company do so. In a recent earnings call, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings admitted that going the ad route would give consumers more options.
“Those who have followed Netflix know that I’ve been against the complexity of advertising and a big fan of the simplicity of subscription,” said Hastings. “But as much as I’m a fan of that, I’m a bigger fan of consumer choice […] Allowing consumers who would like to have lower price and are advertising tolerant get what they want makes a lot of sense.”
Other major streamers have already done this. In the U.S., both HBO Max and Hulu offer lower-cost, ad-supported tiers, while Disney+ will do the same in the U.S. later this year and internationally in 2023. For Netflix, a cheaper alternative could help growth, following the company’s recent news that it lost 200,000 subscribers — its first quarterly decrease in more than 10 years — in Q1 2022. The company is projecting a further loss of two million subscribers in the second quarter.
“Our revenue growth has slowed considerably,” wrote Netflix in an April 19th letter to shareholders. “Streaming is winning over linear, as we predicted, and Netflix titles are very popular globally. However, our relatively high household penetration — when including the large number of households sharing accounts — combined with competition, is creating revenue growth headwinds.”
Netflix attributed the subscriber drop to the suspension of its business in Russia amid global sanctions against the country over its invasion of Ukraine. A cheaper Netflix tier would balance out its recently enacted price increase — the second in under two years.
However, don’t expect an ad-enabled option from Netflix anytime soon. According to Hastings, specific details on how this will work, including pricing, will be hashed out “over the next year or two.” He did note, though, that the company isn’t viewing ads as a “short-term fix” to subscriber growth.
Another strategy the company is publicly eyeing is cracking down on password sharing. While this practice has actually been against Netflix’s terms of service, the company nonetheless hasn’t prevented anyone from doing so. However, the company recently unveiled the testing of a (roughly $3 to 4 CAD) paywall on password sharing in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru.
While the streamer originally said it’s waiting to gather data from these initial tests before making any decisions on expanding them globally, Hastings has now suggested this will likely happen. In its Q1 2022 earnings release, Netflix estimated that in addition to its 222 million paying subscribers, more than 100 million additional households are sharing passwords, including 30 million in the U.S. and Canada.
“Those are over 100 million households already are choosing to view Netflix,” said Hastings. “We’ve just got to get paid at some degree for them.”
It’s unclear when Netflix may potentially introduce the password-sharing paywall in other countries.
Netflix has confirmed that for the first time in more than a decade, it has lost subscribers.
In its latest earnings report, the company revealed that it dropped 200,000 net paid subscribers in Q1 2022. According to Netflix, this drop is due to the suspension of its business in Russia, which led to a loss of 700,000 subscribers. Had that not happened, Netflix claims it would have had 500,000 net additions in Q1 2022.
In any event, the streamer says it expects to lose another two million in the second quarter.
Previously, Netflix has expected to add 2.5 million net subscribers during Q1 2022, with analysts predicting around 2.7 million. For context, Netflix added 3.98 million paid users this time last year.
Revenue, meanwhile, came in at $7.87 billion USD (about $9.33 billion CAD), slightly under analysts’ expectations.
Netflix says it now has 222 million paying households. Interestingly, the company claims more than 100 million additional households are using the service through account sharing. The streamer announced earlier this year that it will test a paywall on password sharing in select foreign countries, although it claims there are no current plans to do this in Canada.
The company also recently raised prices — for a second time in Canada within 2 years — which contributed to a loss of 600,000 subscribers in the U.S. and Canada during the most recent quarter. This was “largely the result of our price change which is tracking in-line with our expectations,” Netflix said.
One of the company’s efforts to diversify its catalogue is the recent launch of Netflix Games, although it’s unclear how many people are currently playing the mobile-only titles.

Two years after Season 5, the sixth and final season of Better Call Saul will finally premiere on April 18th.
However, it should be noted that the 13-episode Season 6 is being split in two. The first half will kick off with a two-episode premiere on the 18th and run until May 23rd, with the latter half picking up on July 11th and concluding on August 15th.
For this final season, AMC is doing something a little different — the series will air on both its TV network and its AMC+ streaming service. This means that those who have AMC’s TV channel and cord-cutters alike can tune into the Season 6 premiere on April 18th at 9pm ET.
AMC+ costs $6.99 CAD/month in Canada and is available exclusively as a channel on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
Set before the events of Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul follows fan-favourite Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) as he works to become the lawyer who eventually meets Walter White (Bryan Cranston). In the final season, Jimmy and Kim (Rhea Seehorn) get up to even shadier business while Gus (Giancarlo Esposito) and Mike (Jonathan Banks) wage war against Lalo (Tony Dalton). Quebec City’s own Michael Mando co-stars as Nacho.
