The Last of Us’ Pedro Pascal suggests not doing mushrooms and watching hit show

There’s been a lot of talk of mushrooms on the internet thanks to HBO’s The Last of Us. The TV show’s apocalypse is all thanks to the Cordyceps fungus and its haunting effects. Series star Pedro Pascal has come forward with his thoughts on another fungus — the magic mushroom.

During an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Pascal, who plays Joel Miller in the series, talked about working on set and his experiences with the show’s infected. Partially through the interview, Meyers asks Pascal whether working on The Last of Us has put him off from enjoying mushroom dishes like pasta.

“I love mushrooms. All kinds,” Pascal emphasizes. “The kinds in restaurants. The kinds that used to come in a little ziplock bag in the ’90s. And now the kinds that are in these colourful chocolates,” he continues.

Meyers then continues joking about ingesting some psychedelic mushrooms and watching The Last of Us. “That I would not do,” Pascal quickly interjects. “That might put you off it for good. So don’t do that.”

The Last of Us is heavily inspired by and based on the video game franchise from PlayStation’s Naughty Dog. Six episodes into the series and audiences have already faced very heavy and emotional narrative threads. Each episode sees Pascal’s Joel and Ellie, played by Bella Ramsey, cross the U.S. in hopes of finding a cure for the Cordecypt virus. Along the way, our two characters stumble upon a cast of characters and horrifying infected.

One infected in particular, dubbed Bloater, has recently built quite the acclaim online. Production and the VFX pulled no punches in replicating the giant enemy from the game and making it a horrifying threat on-screen during the fifth episode of the series. Comprised of grotesque fundal growths, the Bloater became the internet’s number one mushroom. The actor who played infected even went as far as to say “He seems to be a bit of a sex icon.”

Pascal’s comments on the combination of magic mushrooms and the widely successful HBO show are mainly in jest. However, it’s a good to keep in mind as we head toward the final three episodes of the season.

As Netflix cracks down on password sharing in Canada, it’s dropping prices in other countries

While Netflix is attempting to squeeze more money out of Canadians by charging for password sharing, it’s cutting the cost of its streaming service in parts of Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa.

The cuts apply to specific pricing tiers, with the cost being discounted by half in some countries. In a statement to several publications, Netflix said the following regarding the price cuts:

“We’re always exploring ways to improve our members’ experience. We can confirm that we are updating the pricing of our plans in certain countries.”

Canada, the U.S. and most of Europe are not included in the list of countries receiving a discount. As of February 21st, Netflix is charging $7.99 per person to share your streaming account with friends or family on top of the standard monthly subscription cost, and this option is only available to ‘Premium’ ($20.99/month) and ‘Standard’ ($16.49/month) subscribers.

Given we’re only a few days into Netflix’s password sharing crackdown, it’s still unclear how the streaming giant intends to enforce the new rules, though it’s assumed those using someone else’s Netflix account will eventually be locked out based on their IP address. According to Netflix, subscribers must log into their Netflix account from their home internet connection (with their smartphone, for example) once every 30 days to access the streaming service outside of their homes. Netflix’s password sharing fee is also rolling out in New Zealand, Portugal and Spain first before eventually making its way to other regions.

Specific countries that have received a Netflix price cut include Kenya, Iran, Venezuela, Croatia, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia. Netflix is currently available in 190 countries.

Apple services like the App Store, Apple TV+ and Apple Music are currently experiencing outages.

On Thursday afternoon, Apple users took to social media to report being unable to access these services. According to Apple’s official Support page, these services went down at 4:03pm ET for “some users.”

It’s worth noting, however, that the .ca version of Apple Support shows that there are no outages. On the flip side, Down Detector.ca mentions some outages for services like Apple Music. Therefore, your mileage will surely vary depending on where you are.

There’s no word yet on when service will be restored across the board.

Where to stream every Rocky movie in Canada before Creed III

Can you believe that Rocky is nearly 50 years old?

Since 1976, the iconic Sylvester Stallone series about an underdog boxer in Philadelphia has been going strong across eight movies. A ninth, Creed III, is set to release on March 3rd, although it will be the first without Stallone’s Rocky Balboa.

Naturally, a new movie in such a storied franchise might have you wanting to revisit the classics. With that in mind, we’ve rounded up where Canadians can stream the entire Rocky series — the six Stallone-led films and the two Michael B. Jordan-led entries.

  • Rocky (1976) — Amazon Prime Video via MGM (a $3.99/month channel add-on), Crave
  • Rocky II (1979) — Amazon Prime Video via MGM, Crave
  • Rocky III (1982) — Amazon Prime Video via MGM, Crave
  • Rocky IV (1985) — Amazon Prime Video via MGM, Crave
  • Rocky V (1990) — Amazon Prime Video via AMC+ (an $8.99/month channel add-on) or MGM, Crave
  • Rocky Balboa (2006) — Amazon Prime Video via AMC+, Crave
  • Creed (2015) — Amazon Prime Video
  • Creed II (2018) — Amazon Prime Video

An Amazon Prime subscription costs $99/year and includes Prime Video, while a Crave subscription is priced at $19.99/month.

It’s worth noting that Rocky IV, one of the series’ less popular entries, received a Director’s Cut from Stallone that made more well-received changes. This version of the movie, titled Rocky IV: Rocky vs. Drago, isn’t on any subscription video on demand (SVOD) services like Crave, but you can rent it on PVOD platforms like iTunes and Google Play.

Creed III, meanwhile, is notable for being the directorial debut of Michael B. Jordan, who also stars as Adonis Creed, son of Rocky’s late friend Apollo (Carl Weathers). Creed III also features the return of Tessa Thompson as Adonis’ partner, Bianca, and series newcomer Jonathan Majors as Adonis’ old friend with a score to settle, Damian Anderson.

The Last of Us episode has Game of Thrones-esque editing error

An eagle-eyed viewer of The Last of Us has caught a minor but amusing error in the latest episode of the hit HBO series.

On Twitter, guitarist Scott T. Jones shared an image of a wide shot of the episode’s wintry Wyoming scenery. It looks beautiful, but there’s something wrong with it — a few crew members can be seen in the bottom left. Admittedly, they look so small in the frame that most people would have likely not noticed or simply thought they were part of the trees.

Still, it’s interesting to see accidents like this pop up in such a big HBO production, especially when it isn’t the first time. In episode four of Game of Thrones‘ eighth and final season, a Starbucks coffee cup was infamously visible in front of Daenerys (Emilia Clarke). This isn’t exclusive to HBO, either. In another Pedro Pascal series, Disney’s The Mandalorian, a crew member wearing a t-shirt and jeans was standing behind Greef Karga (Carl Weathers). In both cases, the issues were digitally removed, so it remains to be seen whether HBO will do the same with The Last of Us.

In any case, what’s most notable about the latest episode of The Last of Us, at least for Canadians, is where, exactly, this scene was filmed. Indeed, standing in for Episode 6’s Wyoming setting was none other than the lovely small town of Canmore, Alberta. It’s a location that both Pascal and Bella Ramsey said was their favourite in the province to visit during an interview with MobileSyrup“Every inch of Canmore was just this magical little town… with really great fudge,” said Pascal.

It’s worth noting that Season 2 of The Last of Us will adapt The Last of Us Part II, a game that begins in Wyoming. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether HBO will return to Canmore to shoot those scenes and, if so, whether the crew members will stay out of sight next time.

The Last of Us is now streaming exclusively on Crave in Canada.

How to sign up for Netflix account sharing in Canada

Netflix is finally cracking down on password sharing in Canada.

As of February 22nd, all users must have a designated “primary location” for where they’ll stream. This is tracked by your home Wi-Fi network. Connecting to this Wi-Fi network at least once per month will allow you to keep using Netflix on mobile devices should you plan to travel for a few weeks. However, anyone else who tries to stream outside of that primary location “may be blocked from watching Netflix.”

Therefore, the only way to share Netflix with another household is to pay up. In Canada, this costs $7.99/month per person (“extra member”). Netflix Premium subscribers ($20.99/month) can purchase up to two extra members, while Standard subscribers ($16.49/month) may buy one extra member. Basic ($9.99/month) and Basic with Ads ($5.99/month) subscribers cannot purchase extra members. Extra members will have their own account and password, but their membership will be paid for by you.

On a web browser, Premium and Standard subscribers can visit the ‘Buy an extra member slot‘ section under your ‘Account’ once you’re signed in. From here, you’ll have to confirm your new monthly Netflix cost and billing date.

Once that’s done, set up your extra member by entering their name, email address and your name. This information will be used to send your extra member an invitation to be added to your account. If they already have a profile under your account, you can choose to them transfer it once they receive the invitation or let them create a new profile entirely. Profile transfers will allow them to keep their viewing history, ‘My List,’ personalized recommendations and more.

You can also buy an extra member from your TV. If you log in and see a message that says, “To keep sharing with someone who doesn’t live with you, please add an extra member,” click ‘Learn more.’ From there, select ‘Start Extra Member’ and confirm the new monthly payment amount and billing date. Next, select ‘Next’ to enter the phone number of the extra member, who will receive a text message containing their invitation link.

Netflix is cracking down on password sharing because it says more than 100 million additional households are sharing accounts, thus “impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films.”

Naturally, many people have expressed their displeasure with this move, especially after Netflix had previously promoted password sharing as a positive thing. In January, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters acknowledged that this “will not be a universally popular move” and the company will “see a bit of a cancel reaction to that.”

It remains to be seen to what extent that will occur, but in Ontario, at least, a recent survey found that 60 percent of respondents will cancel Netflix due to this crackdown.

Are you willing to pay the sharing fee or will you just cancel Netflix? Let us know in the comments.

How to stream The Weeknd’s Live at SoFi Stadium concert in Canada

Earlier this month, Canadian artist The Weeknd revealed the first look at his upcoming concert event, The Weeknd: Live at SoFi Stadium, is set to launch on February 25th. Available as part of an HBO broadcast, here’s how you can stream the concert event in Canada.

Following the premiere of his new live video for Die For You, The Weeknd announced his Live at SoFi Stadium concert event. Filmed in November 2022, The Weeknd filmed his performance as part of an HBO live special and is now ready to release it to the world.

“Experience the sold-out show like never before,” the description reads on the official trailer.

The Weeknd: Live at SoFi Stadium was filmed in L.A. at the SoFi Stadium as part of the concluding stops on the Scarborough-born artist’s After Hours Til Dawn Tour. The special appears to be in some way a means to make it up to his fans. In September, The Weeknd was forced to cancel his second show in L.A. after losing his voice. Weeks later, the artist continued his tour but returned to SoFi Stadium on November 26th and 27th.

While the special is being broadcasted on HBO Max in the U.S. and other eligible regions, it’s available via Crave in Canada. The concert special is said to be roughly 95 minutes in length. The Weeknd serves as one of the many executive producers on the project.

Crave is available in Canada, starting at $9.99 per month.
