Pedro Pascal’s favourite place in Alberta appears in The Last of Us this week

When we spoke with The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, they had nothing but lovely things to say about Alberta as a whole.

But of all the places they visited during their year-long shoot in the province, there was one place, in particular, that stood out: Canmore.

“My favourite place that we went to was Canmore, for sure,” Ramsey noted, to which Pascal excitedly agreed. “Every inch of Canmore was just this magical little town… with really great fudge,” he added. (Sadly, we weren’t able to ask where he got said fudge.)

Now, we’re finally getting to see the small Alberta town in the hit HBO drama series. In the sixth episode, premiering February 19th, Joel (Pascal) and Ellie (Ramsey) head to Jackson, Wyoming to find Joel’s brother, Tommy (Gabriel Luna). As co-creator/co-showrunner Craig Mazin told us, Canmore was a “dead ringer” for Jackson thanks to its beautiful, snowy vistas.

It’s worth noting that The Last of Us has been renewed for a second season, which will adapt The Last of Us Part II. The game’s opening hours are also set in Jackson, so it remains to be seen if HBO will bring the production back to Canmore for these scenes. For now, though, we have Episode 6 (titled “Kin”) to enjoy, as well as the remaining three episodes.

Part of the appeal of The Last of Us has been to see all of Alberta’s stunning geography, and it’s something that the cast and crew have continued to praise. In a recent interview, Jeffrey Pierce, who plays Perry in the series and Tommy in the games, told us that his time shooting in Calgary was likely his “favourite” filming experience to date. John Paino, the series’ production designer, has also said that he was “shocked” at how “clean” Alberta ended up being.

If you want to follow along with the massive Canadian production, Travel Alberta has a tool that breaks down where each episode was filmed in the province.

The Last of Us is streaming exclusively on Crave in Canada.

The Last of Us’ Bloater seems to be a bit of a sex icon

Spoiler warning: the fifth episode of The Last of Us ends in a massive outbreak in Kansas City.

Among these infected is the giant Bloater, an incredibly large and murderous enemy. This Bloater is played by Adam Basil, a 6’6 British stunt performer from films like No Time to Die, Fast 9, Cruella and Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

Basil spoke to Entertainment Weekly after the episode, saying he got a lot of attention after starring as the Bloater.

“He seems to be a bit of a sex icon,” Basil told EW. “He’s captured a lot of people’s imaginations. Someone asked me if I’d come to their wedding. I’ve had people sending me love messages. He really brought out something in people that I don’t think even they knew they had. He’s the big daddy mushroom, I think there’s been a [meme].”

The costume was designed by Barrie Gower, who made the prosthetics for Game of Thrones‘ Night King and Stranger Things’ Vecna.

The Last of Us hits Crave every Sunday at 9pm ET/6pm PT.

Where to watch Degrassi: The Next Generation for free in Canada

One of the most iconic pieces of Canadian media is, without a doubt, Degrassi.

Created by Linda Schuyler and Kit Hood in 1979, the Toronto-set teen drama franchise has told a slew of coming-of-age stories and addressed all kinds of social issues. To date, there have been five main series, on top of tie-in movies and other media.

Since nostalgia is all the rage nowadays, and Warner Bros. recently shelved a planned Degrassi HBO Max reboot, we thought it would be good to look back on The Next Generation.

After all, it’s perhaps the most notable entry in the long-running Degrassi saga. Besides being the show that helped kickstart Toronto rapper Drake’s career, it was frequently the most-watched domestic drama series in Canada while gaining popularity internationally.

Thankfully, it’s very easy for Canadians to watch the show — you can do so for free on Pluto TV. If you’re unfamiliar, the Paramount-owned service is a free, ad-supported television (FAST) channel. In other words, you can simply visit the Pluto TV website or app on Android, iOS and supported smart TVs and navigate a guide like you would on a cable box to watch whatever you want. You don’t need to pay or even sign up for an account — the only catch is ads will run like they would on standard TV.

On Pluto TV, there’s a dedicated channel just for Degrassi: The Next Generation. This means you can either watch whichever episode is playing “live” or select your desired episode in the “on-demand” section. All 14 seasons of the beloved series are available.

If you want more Degrassi, Prime Video is also streaming all three seasons of Junior High (the second series) and all four seasons of Next Class (the fifth and most recent series). However, you’ll need a $9.99/month Family TV channel add-on in addition to a Prime membership.

Which Degrassi series is your favourite? Let us know in the comments.

Tesla owners omitted from Netflix’s new password-sharing policies

Netflix is omitting Tesla owners from its new password-sharing policies.

Last week, the streaming service cracked down on the ability to share accounts with those outside of the primary household. Since Tesla vehicles are unable to abide by the new policy, Netflix is making an exception.

In Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, Spain, and other regions around the world, Netflix now charges a $7.99 fee to add an extra user outside of the primary household. Tesla owners began to worry as the newly introduced notification popped up on their infotainment center within the vehicle. “A Netflix account is for people who live in the same location,” the message reads.

For households in Canada, primary account holders must then open Netflix and set their primary location. This then binds their account to an I.P. address. Anyone living outside of this location must be added to the account as a sub-account. For Tesla owners, this became a cause for concern as many believed they’d be locked out of their accounts.

Thankfully, those worries can be set aside. When speaking to Tesla North, Netflix confirms that Tesla owners can continue using its streaming service in their vehicles as normal. The outlet asked if owners would have to sign into their home Wi-Fi once per month as was previously rumoured. This does not appear to be the case. Tesla owners don’t appear to have to jump through any hoops to continue their service.

Netflix’s service across Tesla’s vehicles remains active worldwide. The only exception remains to be Hong Kong, where it’s unavailable.

The streamer’s recent crackdown on password sharing has been met with significant criticism. The new policy itself has a lot of restrictions in that the $7.99 monthly cost to add a sub-account isn’t accessible to those on the ad-tier or Basic plan. Those subscribing to the Standard tier can only add one other person.

In order to add the maximum of two sub-accounts, users must be subscribed to the $21.99/month Premium tier, bringing the total monthly cost to nearly $38.

Arrested Development leaving Netflix Canada in March

Arrested Development will leave the Netflix catalogue worldwide, including in Canada, on March 15th.

The date is mentioned on Netflix’s official page and the streamer has since confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter

Notably, this includes all five seasons of the series — both the three that aired on Fox and the two that were produced as Netflix Originals. Netflix told THR that this is due to a licencing agreement that will expire next month.

In the U.S., the first three seasons will stream on Hulu, but it’s not yet clear whether it will come to Disney+ in Canada. Last year, former Netflix Original Marvel shows like Daredevil and Jessica Jones left Netflix and began streaming on Disney+ worldwide, so it remains to be seen whether something similar will happen with Arrested Development.

Arrested Development was created by Mitchell Hurwitz and stars Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Ali Shawkat, Tony Hale, David Cross, Jeffrey Tambor, Jessica Walter and Canada’s own Will Arnett and Michael Cera. The first three seasons ran on Fox from 2003 to 2006 before the series’ cancellation. However, Netflix revived the series and produced two more seasons that released between 2013 and 2019.

Presumably, Netflix has opted to not renew its licence for Arrested Development as part of its larger cost-cutting efforts. Amid inflation, increased competition and bumpy subscriber growth, the streaming giant has been cancelling a slew of projects while pursuing new revenue streams. Most recently, the company revealed that its password-sharing crackdown will officially go into effect on February 21st. It will then cost $7.99 in Canada to share your password.

Ted Lasso Season 3 gets first teaser, March premiere date

Apple has confirmed that the third season of Ted Lasso will premiere on Apple TV+ on March 15th.

The company confirmed the date in a short teaser in celebration of Valentine’s Day.

In the teaser, a variety of characters make their own version of the “Believe” poster, including Jamie (Phil Dunster), Roy (Brett Goldstein), Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) and Keeley (Juno Temple). Ted (Jason Sudeikis) and Beard (Brendan Hunt) then pop up at the end to admire the handiwork.

While the trailer doesn’t appear to reveal anything about the new season itself, it does confirm the premiere date, which is what everyone had been hoping to see. Last month, Apple simply confirmed a vague “spring 2023” premiere window.

It should be noted that March 15th is a Wednesday, making Ted Lasso the first Apple TV+ series to not drop on a Friday. The first episode will premiere on March 15th, with new episodes dropping every subsequent Wednesday.

Interestingly, Apple is only referring to this as the “third season” or, on the AFC Richmond Twitter account, the “new season.” There’s been speculation that this upcoming season would be the series’ last, especially given comments made by Sudeikis. However, it’s looking like Apple won’t be setting the record straight before the third season actually arrives.

While you wait for the next season of Ted Lasso, Apple has another comedy series from co-creator Bill Lawrence and Goldstein called Shrinking.

BeReal adding Spotify integration, enabling users to share favourite songs

French social media app BeReal is said to be developing its own Spotify integrations. The platform has been steadily gaining more attention, attracting a larger audience. It appears as though users will soon be able to share their favourite songs with followers.

For the uninitiated, BeReal enables users to capture and share a photo every day at a different time. It’s designed to encourage users to share authentic moments with friends and followers, given the small window of opportunity. Now, it’s been discovered that users will be able to add music via Spotify alongside sharing a selfie or a photo.

Developer and app analyst Alessandro Paluzzi discovered this work-in-progress. As it’s been shared, BeReal’s music integration allows users to share a song from Spotify with their followers when posting their picture within the allotted window. It’s believed that the feature will launch for both iOS and Android.

On top of music, users can share podcasts when creating content for the platform. BeReal is said to be able to automatically detect when a song or podcast is being listened to. A link to navigate to the content within Spotify is also shared. The app also displays a message reading, “Listen to music or podcasts when you take your BeReal to share it with your friends.”

At the time of writing, it’s unclear when BeReal’s integration of Spotify will be available to all users.

Hive intended to integrate Spotify into its core social platform. Harkening back to the days of MySpace, an option to link their Spotify account to Hive was once active. However, since shutting down its servers as a result of a security issue, this no longer seems possible.
