A13 Bionic allows Apple’s Studio Display to track you during videocalls

Apple revealed its new Studio Display at its ‘Peek Performance’ event yesterday, marking the Cupertino, California-based company’s first standalone monitor offering in several years.

The Studio Display, which looks solid on paper, will be even more satisfying to use thanks to the inclusion of an iPhone chip serving as the brains of the monitor.

The A13 Bionic, the same chip that was introduced in the iPhone 11 lineup and later used in the second-gen iPhone SE and the ninth-gen iPad, allows the Studio Display to fulfill a lot of features that were previously only available on iOS and iPadOS devices in Apple’s ecosystem.

The chip helps power the monitor’s 12-megapixel ultrawide webcam and powers ‘Center Stage’ while on a video call. Center Stage uses machine learning to keep the subject centred, even if you move out of the frame. If others join the feed, it zooms out to fit them in the frame, too.

Although the A13 Bionic is two generations old at this point, it’s still capable of performing over a trillion operations per second, allowing the new monitor to offer staple iOS features like “Hey Siri” to the Mac Pro, Mac Mini and the newly-unveiled Mac Studio desktop. It’s worth noting that Center Stage and “Hey Siri” support only work when the Studio Display is connected to an Apple computer.

Another feature that relies on the A13 chipset, which isn’t supported if you pair the monitor with a Windows PC, is spatial audio. Apple added six speakers and three microphones to the monitor in an attempt to create a cinema-like experience whenever you’re listening to supported tracks or watching videos with virtual spatial audio.

And while the experience might not be as dominant as it is on a pair of Airpods Max, it’s still expected to recreate an immersive experience that would be better than your average monitor speakers.

The Studio Display starts at $1,999 and will be available on March 18th.

Apple’s new Studio Display will work with Windows devices

MobileSyrup can confirm that Apple’s new Studio Display is compatible with Windows devices.

While Apple’s $2,000 Studio Display works with Windows-powered computers (or any device that features USB-C/Thunderbolt video-out for that matter) it won’t support features like ‘Centre Stage,’ its 12-megapixel webcam or other functionality tied to its A13 Bionic chip.

In essence, the Studio Display will function solely as a screen when plugged into a device that isn’t powered by macOS like a MacBook Pro or Mac mini.

The Studio Display features 600nits of brightness, a 5K resolution and several stand options, including a version that’s compatible with Vesa mounts.

The rear of the Studio display features three USB-C ports and a single Thunderbolt jack. The Studio Display releases on March 18th and starts at $1,199.

Alongside the Studio Display, Apple also announced the powerful Mac Studio today. For everything revealed during Apple’s March event, follow this link.

Apple’s new $2,000 Studio Display has a webcam and iPhone chip inside

Packed into a body that looks like the new M1 iMacs, Apple has built the perfect 27-inch display for creators.

This screen can hit 600 nits of brightness and has a 5k resolution. Apple has also packed in True tone to adapt to the light in your room. But don’t worry because you can turn it off when you want to take advantage of the whole p3 wide colour gamut.

Since there is an Apple A13 Bionic chipset, there are some extra features packed into this display. For instance, Apple has built lots of mics, and a 12-megapixel webcam into the Studio Display to it can be the perfect video calling device for work. It even supports Centre Stage and Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos.

The display also allows Apple to provide 3 USB C ports and a single Thunderbolt cable on the back. That means you can easily hook up other displays or computers, and it can even fast charge the new 14-inch MacBook Pro.

This display starts at $1,599 USD (roughly, $2,000 CAD).

More to come…
