The best Super Bowl LVII ads you missed because you’re in Canada

The Super Bowl is one of the biggest sporting events in the world, and it’s something football fans and non-football fans look forward to, thanks to the abundance of material not related to sports.

In 2023, this included the half-time show (aka the Rihanna concert) and everyone’s favourite, the commercials. The productions cost millions and deliver people around the world information they may or may not need. However, Canadians miss out on the commercials (thanks, Bell), so here’s a roundup of some of the finest Super Bowl commercials to grace us in 2023.

Rakuten

Clueless fans, this one’s for you. Alicia Silverstone reprises her role as Cher Horowitz to sell the benefits of Rakuten, which gives you cashback to shop at your favourite stores.

Uber One

Tasked with creating a hit jingle for the company, Diddy lets his musical talent (and the talent of many others) shine in this comedic take.

e.l.f

I know, this is a tech blog. But who doesn’t want skin as smooth as a baby dolphin? That’s what actor Jennifer Coolidge says she felt like after using the makeup brand’s primer. Coolidge is one of the greats, so this ad did no wrong in my eyes.

Kia

Kia’s ad is a peculiar one, but I can appreciate the premise. Featuring “binky dad” who forgets his baby’s favourite binky, a man goes viral for trying to retrieve it while behind the wheel of the 2023 Telluride X-Pro.

NFL

Super Bowl ads often tug at our emotional and comedic heartstrings, but NFL’s ad takes this all a little further. Featuring Diana Flores, the quarterback of Mexico’s national flag football team, the ad shows everyone, even her own mother, trying to grab her flags. While it includes many funny moments, it pushes forward the message to make football more diverse.

Of course, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez starred in a Dunkin’ Donuts commercial.

General Motors, Netflix and Will Farrell push GM’s electric vehicles in this clever ad.

How to stream Super Bowl LVII in Canada

On Sunday, February 12th, the Kansas City Chiefs will face off against the Philadelphia Eagles at the Super Bowl LVII for the ultimate NFL glory.

The matchup is expected to kick off at 3:30pm PT/6:30pm ET at the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, with a halftime show featuring Rihanna.

Canadians can stream the action directly on the sports streaming app DAZN. A subscription to DAZN ($24.99 CAD) gives you access to NFL GamePass, which includes all regular-season NFL Games and playoffs. If you aren’t a DAZN subscriber, you’ll have to shell out $24.99 for a monthly plan or $199.99 for a yearly plan to watch the 57th Super Bowl.

The DAZN app is available on almost all devices, including AndroidiOSFire TVAndroid TV, Apple TVChromecastRoku, and all major gaming consoles. You can see the entire list of supported hardware here.

Canadians with a cable connection can stream the game directly on the CTV channel on their TV, or on the CTV website with their TV service provider credentials. Supported TV service providers include Bell, Eastlink, NorthernTel, Rogers, SaskTel, Shaw, Telus, Access and more. Check out the full list of supported providers here.

Alongside CTV, TSN also holds the national broadcast rights to the Super Bowl in Canada. If you have TSN 1 or TSN 4 included in your cable plan, you can watch the event directly on your TV. If you don’t, you’ll have to subscribe to TSN’s monthly or annual pass. The monthly pass should suit those who only want to stream the Super Bowl, and not use the service thereafter. It costs $19.99.

Those who’d like to stream sporting events throughout the year should go with the annual plan. It costs $199.99 (billed annually), which equates to $16.66 per month.

U.S. Super Bowl LVII ads will once again skip Canada, with one exception

For a few years, Canadians were able to enjoy the glossy, star-studded U.S. ads that have become a staple of the Super Bowl.

However, Bell complained that it was losing millions in revenue by not being able to run local Canadian ads, and, in 2019, the Supreme Court ruled in favour of the telecom giant. This means that every Super Bowl since has only had Canadian ads, despite the fact that many Canadians said the ads are a major reason for watching.

Alas, that rule hasn’t changed in 2023. In other words, for the fourth consecutive year, the American ads won’t show up during Canadian broadcasts of February 12’th’s big game, this time between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.

Well, almost all of them. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) does allow U.S. companies to purchase ad time during Canadian streams, and this year, Doritos’ Missy Elliott and Elton John spot will air here.

Of course, Super Bowl ads are sometimes released online ahead of time, so you can always try to find them that way. One of those is PopCorners’ amusing Breaking Bad commercial which sees Walter White (Bryan Cranston), Aaron Paul (Jesse Pinkman) and Tuco Salamanca (Raymond Cruz) reunite for some crunchy snacks.

Movie and TV show trailers typically get uploaded quickly to their respective social media channels, too. This year, we’re expecting looks at Fast XThe FlashGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Marvels (co-starring Markham, Ontario’s Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel).

What ads are you hoping to see? Are you rooting for the Chiefs or Eagles? Let us know in the comments.

NFL and DAZN Group announce new 10-year deal for Canada starting in 2023

The National Football League (NFL) and DAZN Group have confirmed that a new 10-year deal is in place. Starting with the 2023 season, a decade-long commitment will see NFL season and the Super Bowl available to stream in Canada.

DAZN offers on-demand streaming options for NFL Game Pass International. This platform secures a way for those outside of the U.S. to turn into every NFL matchup throughout the regular season. Games held in the postseason are also available. This includes NFL Network, NFL RedZone, and an extensive library of NFL Films and NFL Media Programming.

DAZN is largely considered one of the lesser-known streaming services in Canada. However, around this time of year, the demand for streaming options surges as the Super Bowl draws near. This is likely to be the case again as Super Bowl LVII is around the corner. Cable broadcasts for the NFL remain secure by Bell Media. Therefore, cable cutters typically turn to DAZN for a way to tune in each year.

On top of being an option in Canada, DAZN is a “leading digital sports platform” in Italy, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Japan, the U.S. and the U.K. DAZN is accessible on a variety of devices including smart TVs, smartphones, tablets and consoles.

DAZN is available in Canada for $24.99 per month.
