Did you watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie?

Many people will celebrate Easter or Passover this long weekend, but some folks might also be celebrating the release of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in theatres.

The film features the voices of Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and many more. The Illumination film has a pretty low 53 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, but the ‘Audience Score’ is 96 percent, indicating that critics and fans are split on the new movie.

I haven’t seen The Super Mario Bros. Movie yet, but MobileSyrup‘s Brad Shankar watched the film, and you can read his thoughts on it here.

So, our question this week: did you watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and if you did, how was it? Let us know in the comments below.

In related news, MobileSyrup just kicked off a contest with Nintendo of Canada to send you and a friend to New York City for the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. More information can be found here.

New AI tool can generate infinite Super Mario levels

Despite the vast amount of Mario-based games available, more than 200 to put a number to it, many fans still can’t get enough of the Shigeru Miyamoto-created Italian plumber. Luckily for such fans, there’s a new AI tool that can generate an infinite number of playable Mario levels.

As shared by SlashGear, MarioGPT uses AI, text prompts, and a predicted player path to generate real-like Mario levels. The AI is trained on levels from two classic Mario games, “Super Mario Bros” and “Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels,” giving it a solid grasp of assets, enemies, and general gameplay to create authentic-looking levels.

“MarioGPT is the first text-to-level model. We also combine MarioGPT with novelty search, enabling it to generate diverse levels with varying play-style dynamics (i.e. player paths). This combination allows for the open-ended generation of an increasingly diverse range of content,” wrote the tool’s creators.

Anyone can currently grab the tool off of GitHub, but you’ll need a degree of game development knowledge to use it. Its creators have released an in-depth paper on its creation and functions for those who want to know more. The code for the levels is generated through Python 3.8, and all levels are random, so the same prompt can produce different levels every time the code is run. Examples of prompts include “many pipes, many enemies, some blocks, high elevation,” “no pipes, many blocks, some enemies,” and “Some pipes, many blocks, no enemies, low elevation,” as shared by SlashGear. In some cases, the code might not work and the generated level might be unplayable, but running the code again to generate a new level should solve the issue.

MarioGPT is a promising tool for fans and indie developers alike, with the potential to generate an infinite number of Mario levels, and possibly extend beyond the Mario universe to other games. Read more about it here.

New Super Mario Bros. trailer is a plumbing commercial

The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s latest trailer is out now… well, sort of.

A new 31-second-long commercial featuring Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) and Luigi (voiced by Charlie Day) promotes their plumbing business. “Oh we’re the Mario brothers and plumbing’s a game, we’re not like the others who get all the fame. When your sink is in trouble, you could call us on the double, we’re faster than the others, you’ll be hooked on the brothers.”

“Thank you Super Mario Bros., it seems like the only thing you haven’t drained is my bank account,” says a satisfied customer towards the end of the ad. There’s also a mock website, with satisfied, and some unsatisfied customer testimonials, and career opportunities. Additionally, by dialling 929-55-MARIO (929-556-2746), you can reach Super Mario Bros. Plumbing. Once dialed, you’ll hear Luigi himself telling you to text on the same phone number for any plumbing needs. The number is U.S.-based, so don’t call on it if your mobile plan doesn’t support international calling. Or…call on it, if you really need ‘well-qualified’ plumbers to do the job.

Hear Chris Pratt try to be Italian again in new Super Mario Bros. movie trailer

Nintendo has debuted the second trailer for the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Revealed during a November 29th Nintendo Direct, the trailer lets us hear more of Chris Pratt’s bizarre Mario voice as well as Charlie Day’s Luigi, who both said little during last month’s debut teaser. As previously teased, the trailer also introduces Princess Peach, played by Anya Taylor-Joy.

We also get nods to classic Mario staples like the Fire Bar and even Mario Kart. Unfortunately, we only get a glimpse at Seth Rogen’s Donkey Kong as he’s about to fight Mario — we don’t get to hear the Canadian funnyman’s voice. (He did appear in the Direct via a pre-recorded live-action talking segment, however.) Additionally, Nintendo says that Charles Martinet, the long-running voice of Mario in the games, will appear in “surprise cameos.”

Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (Teen Titans Go! To the Movies) serve as co-directors. Composer Brian Tyler (Avengers: Age of Ultron) is also working with original Mario series composer Koji Kondo to integrate some of his iconic tunes into the original score.

Following a delay out of 2022The Super Mario Bros. Movie will hit North American theatres on April 7th, 2023.

Chris Pratt says his Mario voice will be an ‘updated’ version

When hearing that Chris Pratt would play the role of the Nintendo’s famous plumber, Mario from the Super Mario franchises, it was an odd selection to take in.

Pratt, whose role was announced in 2021, seems confident that he can nail the role as an Italian plumber. In a report from Variety, Pratt says his role will be “updated and unlike anything you’ve heard in the Mario world before,” a noble statement considering the amount of criticism going around for him receiving the role with a non-Italian background.

However, Illumination Entertainment CEO Chris Meledandri backed Pratt’s upcoming performance in the film.

Meledandri, who is of Italian-American heritage, says he’s not worried about offending Italians or Italian Americans and that he thinks Pratt will turn heads once the film is released, according to a report by Deadline.

As someone of full Italian descent, I found it amusing that Pratt was selected, and I’m really curious, as many others are, to see how he will sound as Mario when the film is out.

Pratt will also be voice acting another famous animated character in Garfield, which fans poked jokes at with some memes.

The Mario movie was anticipated for release in December 2022 but was pushed to April 7th, 2023, for North America.

It will star Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Charlie Day as Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Canadian Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong. A cameo by the original Mario voice actor Charles Martinet will also be included.
